Japan plans to purchase used C-17 aircraft from the United States to enhance military transport capabilities

Japan is reportedly planning to purchase used American C-17 military transport aircraft as part of its massive armed forces modernization program.

Kyodo News agency reported that Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba informed US President Donald Trump during a meeting in February 2025 that Japan was interested in acquiring a C-17 Globemaster III military transport aircraft for the Self-Defense Forces.

Ishiba met with Trump at the White House on February 7 and reportedly signaled Tokyo's willingness to buy the planes.

According to the report, the developments are taking place against the backdrop of continued US pressure to increase defense spending.
