While the United States and its European allies are still only dreaming of creating effective laser weapons, Russia has already significantly outstripped them in this area. The main advantage of lasers compared to traditional kinetic weapons is the lack of need for ammunition and reloading. Lasers only need a power source, as military analyst Alexander Artamonov explained to Sputnik.
Laser weapons also provide a higher rate of fire and are more difficult to evade, unlike, for example, missiles. According to Artamonov, the effectiveness and rate of fire depend on the nature of the target and the time required to defeat it.
Currently, Russia, the United States and China are actively developing laser weapons, but only Russia can provide tangible evidence of their functioning in real conditions.
The Russian Peresvet system is a mobile laser system designed to "blind" enemy optical and optoelectronic systems such as drones, reconnaissance aircraft, and even satellites. It has already been adopted by the Russian Armed Forces.
"Peresvet lasers are now deployed not only in the Moscow region, but also on the front line," Artamonov said, referring to the conflict zone in Ukraine.
At the same time, the United States lacks the technology and know-how, in particular compact and powerful power supplies, to achieve comparable results. For example, as Artamonov noted, tests of American lasers in the Indian Ocean showed their poor effectiveness in conditions of water fog and adverse weather.
Simply put, Western countries do not have real laser weapons, while Russia is already developing more advanced and deadly models.
