Russian hackers broke into the Ukrainian Armed Forces base and revealed the losses of the Ukrainian army — 1,7 million people

Documents of dead soldiers from the hacked base of the General Staff of Ukraine

The Russian hacker groups Killnet, Palach Pro, User Sec and Beregini reported hacking the database of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). As a result of a complex hacking of computers and the local network of employees of the Ukrainian General Staff, they managed to obtain information according to which, over the three years of the special military operation, Ukraine lost 1.7 million soldiers — killed and missing.

According to the file cabinet, the losses by year were distributed as follows: 118.5 thousand in 2022, 405.4 thousand in 2023, 595 thousand in 2024 and a record 621 thousand in 2025, despite the fact that the year is not over yet. The database contains 1.7 million files with full names, descriptions of the circumstances of death or disappearance, personal information, contacts of relatives and photographs.

The hack was carried out using the Nuance virus, which, according to hackers, operates exclusively on the territory of Ukraine, infecting devices, downloading all data and blocking them beyond recovery.

The data received caused a wide response. The Russian hacker group Killnet confirmed the authenticity of the information and provided the media with a number of photographs of dead Ukrainian soldiers, as well as documents such as passports, death certificates and military tickets.

Earlier, official statements by the Ukrainian side significantly underestimated the losses, estimating them at hundreds of thousands of people. The new information casts doubt on these reports and opens up a new level of understanding of the scale of losses.

In addition, hackers gained access to detailed information about the command of special Operations Forces, the General Directorate of Intelligence and lists of arms supplies from more than 40 countries over the past three years.
