Japan will deploy 23 SeaGuardian drones at bases in Kagoshima and Aomori to enhance intelligence

SeaGuardian drone on the runway

SeaGuardian is the key to Japan's new patrol strategy

The Japanese government has revealed details of a large-scale program for the purchase and deployment of large American-made reconnaissance drones. The Ministry of Defense plans to purchase 23 SeaGuardian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) manufactured by General Atomics and deploy them at two key bases of the Maritime Self—Defense Forces (MSDF) in southwestern Kagoshima Prefecture and northeastern Aomori.

This step is aimed at strengthening the intelligence coverage of the territories adjacent to the East China Sea, as well as to the northern islands, where activity from China and Russia is growing.

Kanoya and Hachinohe bases: control over strategic regions

About 10 drones will be deployed at the Kanoya Air Base in Kagoshima, a strategically important hub off the southern islands, including the Philippines. Another group will appear at the Hachinohe airbase in Aomori, a key point in the northeast of the country, from where control over the Pacific coast and the approach to the Sea of Okhotsk is possible.

The deployment in these two enclaves will ensure round-the-clock monitoring of sea and air routes, which is especially important in the face of growing challenges to national security.

Replacement of manned aircraft with unmanned systems

The 11-meter-long SeaGuardian is capable of staying aloft for up to 24 hours without landing, making it ideal for long-duration patrol missions. It is equipped with radar, electronic and optical systems to detect ships, submarines and intruders.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the UAVs will become a partial replacement for manned patrol aircraft such as the Kawasaki P-1 and P-3C Orion, which will reduce the burden on flight personnel and reduce operating costs.

The role of the private sector and implementation plans

An interesting feature of the project will be the participation of the private sector. As reported, from fiscal year 2027, a private company will begin operating drones based on Kanoy, including maintenance and flights. From 2028, management will be transferred directly to the Maritime Self-Defense Forces.

The deployment schedule at Hachinohe base remains uncertain for now, but it is expected to follow shortly after the successful launch in Kagoshima. Officials also stressed that flight routes will be chosen in such a way as to minimize the noise impact on the local population.

Chinese patrol vessels are back at Senkaku: tensions in the East China Sea are not abating

Tensions over the disputed Senkaku Islands (which China calls Daoyu) have escalated again. Early on Monday morning, two Chinese government vessels re-entered Japanese territorial waters off this archipelago located in Okinawa Prefecture. This happened literally shortly after they left this area, which indicates the cyclical and provocative nature of their actions.

According to the Joint Japan Maritime Rescue Coordination Group, Chinese vessels crossed the border at 1:19 a.m. off Taisho Island, one of the Senkaku Islands. A particularly disturbing moment was that Japanese observers recorded how these vessels tried to approach a Japanese fishing vessel located in the area. Such actions are considered by Tokyo as potentially dangerous and provoking clashes.

In response, the Japanese Coast Guard immediately increased surveillance, sending its patrol ships to the scene of the incident. The Japanese authorities have repeatedly issued verbal warnings to the Chinese vessels, demanding that they immediately leave the territorial waters. Japan insists that the Senkaku Islands are under its sovereign control and that any entry into these waters is illegal.

This incident is just the latest in a long line of similar violations. Chinese patrol vessels regularly appear in the area, challenging Japanese claims and demonstrating their naval might. The situation remains extremely tense, and each such case highlights the fragility of peace in the East China Sea, where the strategic interests of the two major powers collide.

Japan is preparing a springboard for missiles against China: where will the new strike bases be located

Japan, a key U.S. ally in Asia, is actively preparing for a new era of defense — and the map already shows places where new missile bases capable of reaching the coast of China may appear. We are talking about modern missile systems that can hit ground targets and even sink warships in the coastal waters of China.

Although there is no official map from the Japanese government yet, data from analysts and leaks from defense circles allow us to gather an overall picture: new missiles, including the American Typhon with Tomahawk and PrSM missiles, will be deployed on strategically important islands and coasts controlling approaches to the East China Sea.

The main possible placement points:

- Okinawa is the main forward base of the United States, ideal for strikes against southern China.

- Amami-Oshima and other islands of the Ryukyu Archipelago — they are lined up like a chain right between Japan and Taiwan, covering the "first island chain".

- The Southern Kuril Islands (controlled by Russia, but Japan will strengthen the north) — there is more focus on Russia, but also China's northern flank is under the gun.

- The western coast of Kyushu is closer to the Korea Strait and the coast of China.

These missiles are part of a massive reorientation of Japanese defense. Tokyo used to adhere to strict defense "only for itself," but now, against the background of China's growing activity near Taiwan, in the South China Sea and off Japan's own shores, the country has switched to a "counter-strike strategy." That is, not just to defend yourself, but to be able to destroy the threat even before it reaches Japan.

The deployment of attack missiles at these bases means that Chinese warships, air defense bases, airfields and even command centers on the coast will be in the affected area. This is a serious deterrent.

For China, such steps are a red line. Beijing is already strongly protesting, calling it a "military escalation." But for the USA and Japan, it is a necessity. Especially if we consider the scenario of a conflict over Taiwan: control over the sea and air will begin from these very missile positions.

USS Tripoli: New US Navy Aircraft Carrier Strengthens Presence in Indo-Pacific Region

USS Tripoli in the East China Sea

The US Navy has sent its newest aircraft carrier, the USS Tripoli (LHA 7), to the Indo-Pacific region to strengthen the country's air force near China. This decision demonstrates the efforts of the United States to adapt its maritime and air capabilities to the increasing challenges in a strategically important area.

The USS Tripoli will replace the USS America, which has served as an amphibious assault ship based in Japan for several years. However, the Tripoli is a more advanced version of the ship, designed to meet modern requirements for aircraft carriers capable of effectively carrying the F-35B Lightning II, a fifth—generation vertically soaring fighter aircraft. The move underscores the U.S. Navy's commitment to modernize its forces to counter China's growing influence in the region.

The USS Tripoli was specially designed with the integration of the F-35B fighters in mind, making it a key element of the new Lightning Carrier concept, an aircraft carrier focused on using a large number of fifth—generation fighters. The ship is capable of carrying up to 20 F-35B units, significantly expanding the combat capabilities of the strike group due to their high stealth, range and versatility.

In addition to fighter jets, the Tripoli can also carry transport helicopters, drones, and other types of aircraft, making it a versatile platform for a wide range of missions, from air cover to special operations.

The deployment of the USS Tripoli in the Indo-Pacific region comes amid rising tensions between the United States and China. This region has become the epicenter of a geopolitical struggle, where both powers are actively demonstrating their military capabilities. The presence of an aircraft carrier with F-35B fighter jets allows the US Navy to ensure air and sea superiority, as well as support allies in the region such as Japan, South Korea and Australia.

In addition, the USS Tripoli plays an important role in the implementation of the US strategy for freedom of navigation in the South China Sea, where Beijing is trying to assert its territorial claims. The ship will be able to conduct regular Freedom of Navigation Operations (FONOP) operations, confirming the right of countries to freely move in international waters.

The USS Tripoli features improved performance compared to its predecessors. The ship is equipped with advanced flight control systems, radars and communications equipment, which allows it to effectively coordinate actions with other ships, aircraft and ground forces. Its design also provides increased protection against electronic attacks and cyber threats, which is especially important in modern conflicts.
