EPISODE #002: ARTEMIS-2 — HUMANITY'S FIRST STEPS INTO DEEP SPACE AND THE FIRST BIOMEDICAL EXPERIMENT BEYOND EARTH IN 50 YEARS

Astronauts of the Artemis 2 mission will conduct scientific experiments on humans during their journey around the moon.

🚀 Mission Context

The Artemis-2 mission, scheduled for September 2025, will be historic for several reasons:

  • First crewed flight around the Moon since 1972 (after Apollo 17).
  • First manned test of the SLS rocket + Orion capsule combination.
  • Crew of four astronauts — including the first Canadian and the first woman to fly to the Moon.
  • Duration: ~10 days, with about 6 days in deep space, including a lunar flyby at a distance of up to 8,889 km behind its far side.

But beyond engineering tasks — testing life support systems, navigation, communications — the main "scientific payload" will be the astronauts themselves.

🧪 Biomedical Experiments: What Will Be Studied?

Unlike the ISS, where conditions are microgravity + Earth's magnetosphere protection, Artemis-2 will take humans into deep space, where:

  • Gravity changes (from 1g at launch → 0g in flight → brief overloads during maneuvers).
  • Radiation levels are 100–300 times higher than on Earth, and 2–3 times higher than on the ISS.
  • Psychological pressure — isolation, remoteness from Earth, no possibility of rapid evacuation.
  • Circadian rhythms — disrupted due to the absence of the usual "day/night" cycle.

NASA will focus on three key aspects:

1. 🧬 Impact of Space Radiation on the Body

  • Dosimeters installed inside spacesuits and the capsule.
  • Analysis of biomarkers in blood and urine before, during, and after the flight — for DNA damage, oxidative stress, inflammatory reactions.
  • Special attention to cognitive functions: daily tests on memory, attention, reaction speed.

Goal: Understand the risks for future Mars missions, where radiation exposure is even higher.

2. 😴 Sleep and Circadian Rhythms in Deep Space

  • Astronauts will wear actigraphs — devices that track sleep-wake cycles.
  • The Orion cabin features adjustable LED lighting, simulating Earth's cycle (blue light in the morning → warm in the evening).
  • Diaries of subjective well-being and fatigue are kept.

Problem: In space, without natural light and gravity, the brain loses "anchors" for biorhythms. This leads to insomnia, decreased concentration — critical for mission safety.

3. 😰 Psychological Stress and Group Dynamics

  • The crew undergoes daily psychological surveys.
  • Cameras and microphones (with crew consent) are used to analyze communication, voice tone, non-verbal signals.
  • Testing mental health support tools: VR relaxation, family communication, "smart" interfaces to reduce cognitive load.

Note: The Artemis-2 mission is a rehearsal for Artemis-3 (Moon landing) and beyond — for Mars. It is crucial to understand how people behave in isolation, 400,000 km from Earth, without the "safety net" of the ISS.

🌍 Why Is This Important?

Since 1972, no human has ventured beyond Earth's magnetosphere. All data on the effects of deep space on humans is theoretical or obtained from animals/ground simulators.

Artemis-2 is the first live human experiment in real interplanetary space conditions.

This data will:

  • Help design radiation protection systems for future lunar bases and Martian ships.
  • Allow optimization of sleep and rest regimes for long-duration missions.
  • Provide the key to maintaining mental health in isolation — critical for expeditions to Mars (2–3 years!).

👨‍🚀 The Crew — Not Just Pilots, but "Living Laboratories"

The astronauts:

Reid Wiseman

Commander, USA

Victor Glover

Pilot, USA — first African American on a lunar mission

Christina Koch

Mission Specialist, USA — first woman in lunar orbit

Jeremy Hansen

Mission Specialist, Canada — first Canadian beyond the ISS

They are not just "flying around the Moon." They are the first volunteers of a new era in space medicine.

🔬 Connection to the ISS — But With a New Level of Complexity

Yes, the effects of microgravity have been studied on the ISS for decades: muscle atrophy, bone mass loss, changes in the cardiovascular system. But in deep space, two new factors are added:

  1. Galactic cosmic ray (GCR) radiation — high-energy particles that penetrate even through the spacecraft's hull and damage cells.
  2. Lack of "psychological proximity" to Earth — from the ISS, you can see your home continent. From lunar orbit, Earth is a small ball. This is a powerful psychological trigger.

📆 What's Next?

Data from Artemis-2 will be immediately integrated into preparations for:

  • Artemis-3 (2026–2027) — landing near the Moon's south pole.
  • Lunar Gateway station — a permanent "point" in deep space.
  • Mars missions — planned for the 2030s.

🌌 Conclusion: Humans as Explorers — and as Subjects of Study

Artemis-2 is not just a "flight around the Moon." It is humanity's return to deep space — and the first step toward understanding how to survive there long-term.

The astronauts on this mission are heroes not only of engineering, but of science. They risk not only their lives, but their health — so that future generations can live and work beyond Earth.

They are not just flying to the Moon.

They are flying beyond the known — and bringing science with them to light the way for all of us.

P.S. In 50 years, schoolchildren will study "Artemis-2" as the mission that began the era of humanity's permanent presence in deep space — and the first steps of space medicine beyond Earth.

"Radiation is burning the sky": NASA is sounding the alarm due to the expansion of the South Atlantic anomaly

Anomaly expansion: a threat to satellites and space missions

What is the South Atlantic Anomaly?

The South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) is an area of weakened Earth's magnetic field located over the southern Atlantic Ocean and eastern South America. In this region, the inner Van Allen radiation belt is located especially close to the Earth's surface — at an altitude of only 200 km, which makes it dangerous for satellites and spacecraft passing through it.

It is here that the planet's magnetic "armor" is weakened, allowing cosmic radiation to penetrate deeper into the atmosphere.

Anomaly expansion: a threat to satellites and space missions

The latest NASA data shows that the UAA is not only preserved, but also steadily expanding, and its center is shifting to the west. This means that more and more satellites, including American military, communications and scientific devices, are forced to regularly pass through a zone of increased radiation background.

Under the influence of radiation occurs:

  • Malfunctions of on-board electronics
  • Damage to sensors and processors
  • Short-term system shutdowns ("self-reset")
  • Accelerated degradation of equipment

Such failures can lead to data loss, communication disruption, and even complete satellite failure.

The reason is shifts in the dynamics of the Earth's magnetic field

Scientists associate the growth and displacement of the JAA with profound changes in the liquid outer core of the Earth, which generates a magnetic field. Geophysical models show that oppositely directed magnetic field currents under the South Atlantic weaken the overall tension. Some forecasts indicate that the anomaly may split into two separate areas, further complicating the protection of spacecraft.

This phenomenon is also considered as a possible sign of the initial stage of magnetic pole inversion, a process that has occurred on Earth dozens of times in geological history.

Implications for the United States and space rivalry with Russia

For the United States, whose defense and communications rely heavily on satellite systems, the expansion of the UAA represents a strategic vulnerability. Russian scientists and space agencies are also monitoring the anomaly, actively publishing research and offering their solutions to protect spacecraft.

Against the background of growing space rivalry, control over the sustainability of technologies in the face of radiation threats is becoming a factor of technological superiority. The United States is already developing satellites with enhanced radiation protection and adaptive self—healing systems - but the race for safety in space is just beginning.

NASA introduces a "police state regime": searches and AI against employees before mass layoffs

The future of space exploration in the United States has dramatically gone downhill — at least for thousands of NASA employees. The space agency, which once symbolized scientific progress, is now turning into a place resembling a police state. In response to the coming harsh cuts and budget cuts, NASA has begun to implement unprecedented control measures for its employees.

This week, the agency announced the beginning of random personal searches of employees and their cars on the territory of space centers. Although this is officially explained by "ensuring workplace safety," in fact, according to insiders, the real reason is management's panic concerns about corporate espionage. Employees, knowing about upcoming layoffs, can secretly copy or take out confidential data to use it as a "trump card" when looking for a new job in private space companies such as SpaceX or Blue Origin.

These physical searches are just the tip of the iceberg. They go hand in hand with large-scale digital surveillance, in which artificial intelligence plays a key role. AI—based systems now scan employees' emails, file storage, and network activity in search of "suspicious behavior," such as bulk data downloads or frequent contact with competitors.

All this is happening against the backdrop of the Trump administration's shocking decision to cut NASA's budget for fiscal year 2026 by 23%. As a result, the agency is forced to lay off about 5,000 people — almost a tenth of its staff. Such a large-scale crisis generates fear, distrust and, as a result, harsh controls that, according to critics, undermine the very spirit of the scientific community and innovation.

The United States has successfully tested the Talon-A reusable hypersonic vehicle

The Talon-A reusable hypersonic vehicle has exceeded the speed of sound by five times

For the first time, the United States has conducted tests of a reusable hypersonic aircraft. An autonomous drone developed by Stratolaunch exceeded the speed by Mach 5 numbers during a test flight in March 2025. The Talon-A hypersonic vehicle launched from a carrier aircraft, flew over the Pacific Ocean and landed safely at the Space Forces base in California. 1.5 months later, the Pentagon revealed the test data.

In 1968, NASA, the US Air Force and the US Navy closed the X-15 program for the development of a rocket plane for hypersonic and suborbital flights, which lasted for almost 10 years and studied extreme speeds. Then the experimental aircraft set a speed record for manned vehicles — Mach 6.7.

Its successor, the Talon-A, was designed by Stratolaunch, founded in 2011 by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. The flights were conducted as part of the MACH-TB program, a Pentagon initiative aimed at accelerating the development of hypersonic weapons through the use of commercially available test platforms. According to Stratolaunch representatives, the company's reusable platform offers a cheaper and faster alternative to traditional one-time systems, allowing faster data acquisition and retesting.

The Talon-A2 was launched over the Pacific Ocean from under the wing of a huge Roc carrier aircraft with two twin fuselages and a wingspan of 117 meters, which also belongs to Stratolaunch. The drone accelerated to speeds exceeding Mach 5 and landed at the Vanderberg Military Space Base in California.

During the flight of the first single-use Talon-A model, which took place in March 2024, a supersonic speed of just under Mach 5 was achieved. The new version, TA-2, is fully reusable. The Talon-A2 is equipped with a Ursa Major Hadley rocket engine. It is a reusable 2.3-ton rocket engine powered by liquid oxygen and oxygen-enriched kerosene with a hybrid combustion cycle designed for small launch vehicles and hypersonic vehicles.

The success of these trials marks a turning point for Stratolaunch, which has been struggling financially since Allen's death in 2018. The company, originally created for the aerial launch of orbital rockets, was bought in 2019 by Cerberus Capital Management, and has since begun to engage in hypersonic testing. This turnaround was a lifesaver for the company, as it attracted attention and funding from the Pentagon.

Explosion at the Northrop Grumman plant: consequences for the US aerospace industry

The aftermath of the explosion at the Northrop Grumman plant

On April 16, a powerful explosion occurred at the Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems plant located in Promontory, Utah. The incident completely destroyed one of the buildings of the enterprise where solid-fuel rocket engines (SRM) are manufactured. This event has caused serious concern in the aerospace industry, given the company's key role in supporting both government and commercial space programs.

Northrop's Innovation Systems, formerly known as Orbital ATK, is the main supplier of solid-fuel rocket engines in the United States, covering almost 90 percent of the country's needs. These engines play a crucial role in supporting the activities of the US Air Force, NASA, and commercial space launches. Failure of such a strategic contractor may lead to delays in the implementation of national and international projects.

The causes of the explosion are currently being investigated. According to preliminary data, the incident did not cause any human casualties, but the scale of the destruction was significant. The US Air Force has already sent a request to Northrop Grumman demanding to provide a detailed report on the incident and assess the impact of the incident on current contracts.

Experts note that the accident at this facility highlights the need to diversify production of critical components for the space industry. Dependence on a single supplier, especially in the face of growing geopolitical tensions, can become a vulnerability for the American defense and space industries.

While the company is conducting an internal investigation, the question remains as to how quickly production will be restored and what measures will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Chinese breakthrough in space energy: new silicon carbide technology raises U.S. concerns about possible militarization of space

China aims to surpass NASA in "historic mission"; It is moving forward in the space race because the United States is concerned about militarization.

China's recent advances in space technology indicate that the country may become the largest and most powerful space power in the world.

However, the United States is concerned that these breakthroughs are part of China's space warfare strategy.

Thanks to one of these breakthroughs, the Chinese space program has moved a step closer to providing lighter and more efficient energy sources with a new power switch and converter., created using third-generation semiconductor components.

According to Chinese media, a silicon carbide (SiC)-based power device developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAN) has been tested in orbit since November 2024, when the Tianzhou-8 cargo spacecraft delivered it to the Chinese space station.

NASA Opens A New Page In Lunar Exploration: The PRIME-1 Mission Has Been Launched to Explore Subsurface Resources

On February 26, NASA will take an important step in exploring the Moon by sending a unique drilling rig to its surface as part of the PRIME-1 (Polar Resources Ice Mining Experiment-1) experiment. This project will be the first attempt of its kind to penetrate into the bowels of the Earth's natural satellite and conduct a detailed analysis of the composition of the lunar soil. Scientists hope that the data obtained as a result of the mission will help uncover the secrets of the Moon's subsurface resources and open up new opportunities for future space exploration.

The main objective of the experiment is to study the presence and composition of water ice, as well as other useful substances in the subsurface layers of the Moon. Water, if found in significant quantities, could become a key resource for future lunar bases and missions beyond Earth's orbit. It can be used as drinking water, as a source of oxygen for breathing, or as a component for fuel production.

The mission will focus on exploring the polar regions of the moon, where scientists have previously found signs of water ice. These areas are of particular interest due to the low temperatures that can keep water frozen for billions of years.

To achieve its goals, PRIME-1 is equipped with two advanced tools.:

1. TRIDENT Drill (Regolith and Ice Drill for Exploring New Terrains)

This is a specialized device capable of drilling the lunar soil to a depth of one meter. The TRIDENT drill is designed to operate in extreme conditions, including low temperatures and high density of regolith (lunar soil). He will be able to deliver samples of material from the deep layers for further analysis.

2. Mass Spectrometer MSOLO (Mass Spectrometer Observing Lunar Operations)

This instrument is designed to analyze the chemical composition of samples collected by the TRIDENT drill. The mass spectrometer will be able to detect the presence of water, hydrocarbons and other elements, which will help to better understand the potential of using these materials for future missions.

The PRIME-1 mission is part of NASA's broader lunar exploration program, which includes the Artemis project, aimed at returning humans to the lunar surface by the end of the decade. The data obtained during the experiment will be an important contribution to the preparation for these ambitious plans.

The exploration of the Moon's subsurface resources has not only scientific, but also practical value. Finding available reserves of water and other useful substances can significantly reduce the costs of future space missions, as it will allow the production of necessary materials directly on the Moon, minimizing dependence on the delivery of everything from Earth.

The launch of the PRIME-1 mission will take place on February 26 from the Cape Canaveral space Center. The experiment will be delivered to the Moon using a commercial lander, which will become part of NASA's CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) program. This collaboration with private companies allows us to accelerate the development of technologies and reduce the cost of space research.

The PRIME-1 mission opens a new chapter in the exploration of the moon, allowing humanity to look beneath its surface and learn more about its hidden resources. The successful completion of the experiment will be an important step towards establishing a permanent presence on the moon and further space exploration. NASA continues to inspire the world with its ambitious projects, and PRIME-1 is a prime example of how science and technology can work together for common progress.

Mysterious X-37B Space Plane Marks One Year in Orbit: What Is Its True Mission?

X-37B space plane of the US Space Force

The mysterious X-37B space plane of the US Space Force has been orbiting the Earth non-stop for just over a year. What is he doing? This remains unclear, although his hosts revealed some of his actions in 2024. The X-37B set off on its final mission on December 28, 2023, quietly passing the 365- day mark without any official announcements or hype. The X-37B was developed by Boeing and is currently being operated by the U. S. Air Force as part of their efforts to create reusable space technologies. For each mission, it is launched into space using a launch vehicle, flies freely in Earth orbit, then re- enters the atmosphere and lands as a spaceplane. The length of the unmanned spacecraft is 8.9 meters (29 ft), the wingspan is 4.55 meters (14.9 ft). It is capable of flying in low Earth orbit at an altitude of 240 to 800 kilometers (150 to 500 miles) above the Earth at a speed of about 28,200 kilometers ( 17,523 miles) per hour.

Although the US Space Force and Boeing appear to be lifting the veil of secrecy over some aspects of the X-37B's activities, much of its mission remains shrouded in mystery, creating an atmosphere of intrigue around the mysterious spacecraft. The official version of the US military is that the X-37B performs "risk mitigation, experimentation and concept of operations development for reusable space- craft" - a vague statement that does not give an idea of its true purpose. However, we have learned that the space plane is contributing to a long-term study of the effects of cosmic radiation on seed viability, as well as to the testing of radiation-protective thermal coatings for NASA. The X-37B may also be some kind of spy plane or weapon. It's relatively easy to track, and it makes for a pretty spectacular sight when entering the atmosphere.
