The US Air Force is considering the possibility of developing new mini-drones equipped with artificial intelligence (AI), whose chips will simulate the work of the human brain. This will allow drones to become not only more autonomous, but also capable of making decisions in real time without operator involvement.
Scientists have already achieved significant success in this field. In particular, the technology of a neuromorphic chip was created, inspired by the principles of the biological brain. Such chips are capable of reproducing the functions of neurons and providing high computing power with minimal energy consumption.
Another important development was a superminiature AI chip the size of a grain of rice, which also uses bioinspired technologies to process information. This chip is created on the basis of thin polymer films capable of generating signals and impulses, similar to brain neurons. It can be embedded in mini drones to significantly enhance their intelligence and autonomy.
In addition, scientists have previously created hybrid systems that combine living neurons with silicon chips, a new type of artificial intelligence that could potentially be used in military drones. A chip capable of processing images from a drone's camera in real time using minimal energy was also introduced, which is especially important for small-sized devices.
The goal of these studies is to create "forever flying" drones that can perform long-term surveillance, delivery, rescue, and other missions while remaining in the air much longer than current models.
Such developments are fully consistent with the strategic plans of the US Air Force to expand the fleet of drones equipped with artificial intelligence. According to some reports, by 2030, the number of such a fleet may reach up to 2 thousand units , including both large attack drones and light reconnaissance vehicles of a new generation.
