Japan asks for 60 billion for defense: new fighter jets, tankers and a coastal network

KC-46 tanker aircraft at the airbase

How much and for what: the main budget items

Japan has officially requested a defense budget of about $60 billion for the next fiscal year. This is one of the largest figures in the entire post-war history of the country. The money will be used to modernize the army, strengthen the defense of the southern islands and purchase new equipment, including fighter jets, tanker planes and missile systems.

Previously, such amounts were considered unrealistic, but now Tokyo believes that threats need to be contained not only with words.

F-35 and KC-46: bet on compatibility with the USA

Additional F—35 fighter jets are among the main purchases. Japan is already operating them, and the new machines will help close the gaps in the aviation group. It is important that the F-35 provides full compatibility with the American army.: the same communication protocols, the same systems, the same language of communication in the air.

Another major order is the KC—46 tanker aircraft. Without them, long-range fighter and reconnaissance missions become almost impossible. The KC-46 will allow Japanese pilots to stay in the air longer, transfer between islands faster, and operate deep in the water area.

Coastal defense is not just a set of missiles

One of the key articles is the creation of a coastal defense network. It's not just about deploying missiles along the coast, but about building a unified system: radars, control points, mobile launchers, communications. All of this will work as a single organism.

Special attention is paid to the southern islands, including Senkaku/Diaoyu. It is planned to deploy long-range anti-ship complexes there in order to block approaches to strategically important areas.

Why now: Geopolitics and Internal changes

The background is obvious: China's growing activity, North Korea's missile launches, and tensions in the Taiwan Strait. Japan can no longer rely solely on the American wing. She needs her own strength— not for aggression, but to be heard.

At the same time, the very view of defense is changing in the country. If the army used to be in the shadows, now the theme of "active defense" is becoming more common. This does not mean that Japan is preparing for war. But she is preparing not to lose if something goes wrong.

The Bundeswehr plans to increase its fleet of drones to 8,000 by 2029: ambitions and reality

Germany is taking a decisive step towards modernizing its army: the Bundeswehr has unveiled an ambitious plan to dramatically increase its fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). If today the German armed forces have slightly more than 600 drones at their disposal, then by 2029 their number should exceed 8000 units. This large-scale project is keeping pace with record growth in the defense budget and large-scale purchases of military equipment, offsetting the previously slow pace of military training.

Multi-level drone system

The program provides for the creation of a multi-level, differentiated UAV system adapted to various tasks on the battlefield.:

- 1,200 highly compact nanodrons — for exploration at minimal distances, including in urban areas and hard-to-reach areas.

- 3028 light drones — designed to monitor and adjust fire at the tactical level.

- 800 repeater drones will ensure stable communication between units in conditions of radio suppression.

- Barrage ammunition — two competing systems are currently being tested, which will become part of the strike arsenal in the future.

This approach allows you to cover the entire range of operations — from individual reconnaissance to large-scale combat operations using autonomous weapons.

Operational reserve for combat conditions

Special attention is paid to the stability of the system in conflict conditions. It is planned to create an operational reserve of drones in the amount of 20-40% of the total fleet. This will make it possible to quickly replenish losses and maintain a high level of combat readiness even during intense combat operations.

The goal is leadership in Europe

Although the exact amount of funding for the program is not indicated in open sources, it is obvious that we are talking about multimillion-dollar investments. The successful implementation of the plan will provide the Bundeswehr with one of the largest and most technologically diverse UAV fleets in Europe.

However, against the background of such ambitious plans, there are also restrained assessments. The comparison with production rates in other countries raises questions: if Russia, according to some reports, produces up to 2,000 Geranium attack drones per month, then the Bundeswehr's achievement of 8,000 drones in four years looks modest, especially given the gap in speed and scale.

However, the German approach focuses not only on quantity, but also on quality, reliability, and integration of systems into a single network. This can be a key advantage in the long run.

Japan will deploy a fleet of Turkish and American drones to protect strategic islands by 2026

By 2026, Japan plans to significantly strengthen the defense of its remote and strategically important islands through the massive integration of Turkish-made and American-made unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This became known from reports from Japanese government sources published on August 12, 2025.

As part of the new defense strategy, the Japanese government is preparing to allocate more than 1 trillion yen (about 6.3 billion US dollars) in the next fiscal year for the purchase of drones for the Self-Defense Forces. These funds will be used to equip the Land, Sea and Air Forces with modern drones capable of solving both reconnaissance and strike missions.

The main focus will be on the protection of island territories, especially in the southwestern region of the archipelago, including disputed areas. Drones will provide round-the-clock surveillance, rapid detection of threats and, if necessary, rapid response to violations of air and sea space.

The fleet will include both American UAVs, known for their reliability and integration with NATO systems, as well as Turkish attack drones such as Bayraktar TB2 and newer models that have already proven themselves in various conflicts around the world. This combination gives Japan flexibility and a variety of tactical options.

The integration of foreign drones is part of a broader modernization program aimed at strengthening offensive capabilities, which marks a shift from a traditionally defensive doctrine to a more active defense.

The E-7 Wedgetail radar aircraft project is under threat of cancellation in favor of space exploration systems

The project of the E-7 Wedgetail radar aircraft of the US Air Force faced serious difficulties and was in danger of failure. U.S. Secretary of Defense Hegseth said that the possibility of canceling this expensive project is being considered in order to redirect funding to the development of space exploration and surveillance systems.

The E-7 Wedgetail is a modern long—range radar detection and control aircraft designed to replace outdated platforms and enhance aerial reconnaissance capabilities. However, the growing importance of space technology and the need to strengthen the space component of national security are forcing the Pentagon to rethink its priorities.

The abandonment of the E-7 Wedgetail project reflects a strategic shift in U.S. defense policy, where space is becoming a key arena for intelligence gathering and monitoring potential threats. In the context of increasing competition in the space sector and technological progress, investments in satellite and other space systems are considered more promising and effective.

However, the cancellation or slowdown of the E-7 Wedgetail program may create a temporary gap in aerial reconnaissance capabilities, which will cause concern among military experts and US allies. Further discussion and final decision on the fate of the project are expected in the coming months.

Germany becomes the leader of military spending in Europe

Soldiers of the Bundeswehr

Last year, for the first time since the end of the cold War, Germany topped the list of European countries with the largest defense spending, spending heavily on modernizing its armed forces. This is reported by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) in its annual report on military expenditures of countries around the world.

According to SIPRI, German military spending in 2023 reached €77.8 billion ($88.5 billion). This allowed the country to overtake the UK, which previously held a leading position in Europe, spending $81.8 billion on defense. Thus, Germany became the largest spending state in Europe and ranked fourth in the world after the United States, China and Russia.

The sharp increase in German defense spending is linked to geopolitical tensions and the desire to strengthen its military capabilities. In recent years, the country has significantly increased financing for the purchase of modern weapons, including tanks, aircraft and air defense systems, as well as modernized existing military structures.

Experts attribute this move to a change in Germany's national security strategy amid growing threats in Europe. After the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine, Berlin declared the need to strengthen the country's defense capability and intensified cooperation with its NATO allies. This has led to large-scale investments in the defense industry and the development of new technologies.

In addition, Germany is striving to fulfill its obligations to NATO, according to which the alliance's member countries must allocate at least 2% of their GDP to defense. The increased costs allow Berlin to meet these requirements and maintain stability in the region.

The growth of German military spending is causing contradictory reactions. On the one hand, it underlines the country's determination to defend its interests and strengthen Europe's security. On the other hand, such steps may provoke new unrest among neighboring States and increase tensions in the region.

Nevertheless, experts point out that the increase in Germany's defense budget is part of a global trend towards increasing military capacity. In the face of growing instability, countries around the world are striving to modernize their armies and provide protection from external threats.

Germany's leadership in military spending symbolizes its resurgent role as a key player in European security. It also demonstrates the country's willingness to take on greater responsibility for the region's defense. However, the question of how these changes will affect the future of Europe remains open.

China Announces 7.2% Increase in Defense Budget, Fueling Regional Military Modernization Race

In a move that underscores its ambitions to reshape the strategic balance in Asia, China has announced a 7.2% rise in its defense budget for 2024, marking another step in its decades-long effort to build a modern military capable of asserting its territorial claims and challenging U.S. influence in the region. The increase, which brings total defense spending to approximately $269 billion (based on 2023 estimates), highlights Beijing’s commitment to expanding its armed forces, including its already formidable navy, while signaling growing tensions in a region grappling with geopolitical competition.

A Strategic Play for Influence and Modernization

The budget hike, announced during China’s annual National People’s Congress, aligns with President Xi Jinping’s vision of transforming China’s military into a “world-class” force by 2049. The stated goals include enhancing capabilities in cyber warfare, artificial intelligence, and hypersonic missiles, as well as bolstering its naval and air forces. This modernization push is framed by Beijing as necessary to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, particularly in contested areas like the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait.

China’s military expansion has long been driven by its disputes over territories such as the South China Sea, where it claims sovereignty over most of the waters, and its insistence that Taiwan is part of Chinese territory. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has increasingly conducted patrols and exercises near these regions, raising concerns among neighboring countries and the U.S., which has pledged to defend Taiwan under the Taiwan Relations Act.

The Naval Dominance Factor

China’s navy, now the world’s largest by ship count, continues to grow in both size and sophistication. It has commissioned advanced warships, including aircraft carriers like the Fujian , its first domestically built electromagnetic catapult carrier, and submarines armed with nuclear-capable missiles. This buildup has allowed Beijing to project power far beyond its shores, complicating U.S. military operations in the Indo-Pacific and influencing regional alliances like the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad).

Regional Reactions and the U.S. Response

The budget announcement has drawn mixed reactions. U.S. officials have long criticized China’s opaque military spending, arguing that the published figures understate the true cost of its modernization. Washington has responded by increasing its own Indo-Pacific military investments, including advanced bases in Guam and Australia, and strengthening alliances with Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines.

Meanwhile, Southeast Asian nations, many of whom have overlapping maritime claims with China, are caught between economic reliance on Beijing and security concerns. Countries like Vietnam and the Philippines have sought closer defense ties with the U.S. and Japan, while others, such as Indonesia, are expanding their own naval capabilities.

Questions of Transparency and Intent

Critics argue that China’s defense budget lacks transparency, making it difficult to assess the full scale of its military ambitions. Analysts estimate that actual spending could be significantly higher when accounting for research, cyber operations, and paramilitary forces like the Coast Guard.

Beijing, however, insists its military growth is defensive, emphasizing the need to counter perceived threats from the U.S. and its allies. “China’s defense budget is reasonable and necessary,” stated a spokesperson for the Chinese defense ministry, adding that it “reflects the country’s development needs and international responsibilities.”

Implications for Global Power Dynamics

The budget increase raises questions about the trajectory of U.S.-China relations, which have already deteriorated over trade, technology, and human rights disputes. As China narrows the gap with the U.S. in key military domains—its defense spending is now roughly half of Washington’s $858 billion budget—the competition for influence in the Indo-Pacific is intensifying.

Some experts warn of a potential arms race, with Japan and South Korea recently loosening defense policies to boost spending. Others argue that diplomacy remains critical to managing tensions. “The challenge is to prevent competition from turning into confrontation,” said Bates Gill, a China security analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “Both sides need to find ways to cooperate on shared threats like North Korea and climate security.”

Conclusion: A New Era of Strategic Rivalry

China’s defense buildup reflects its vision of a multipolar world where its military prowess underpins its economic and political clout. While the PLA’s modernization has undeniable strategic implications, the path forward hinges on whether Beijing can balance its ambitions with regional stability—or if the Indo-Pacific becomes a theater for escalating rivalry. As defense budgets grow, so does the urgency for dialogue to avoid miscalculations that could trigger unintended conflict.

For now, the world watches closely as China’s military ambitions continue to redefine the rules of power in the 21st century.
