Interception of the Russian Il-20 over the Baltic Sea

NATO has scrambled two German Eurofighter fighter jets of the German Air Force to intercept a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft. The Russian plane was in the airspace over the Baltic Sea with the transponder turned off and without presenting a flight plan, which caused concern among the alliance.

Two Eurofighters, lifted from a German airbase, performed the task of identifying and escorting the Russian aircraft, providing control and monitoring of the situation in the region. These actions are part of NATO's measures to maintain airspace security in the high-tension zone.

The incident reflects the ongoing tensions between NATO and Russia in the airspace of the Baltic region. Such interceptions and monitoring of aircraft are often carried out to prevent unforeseen incidents and maintain a balance of power.

A European fighter jet with artificial intelligence took off over the Baltic for the first time — the war could change forever

Imagine a fighter jet that doesn't sleep, doesn't get tired, doesn't panic, and accumulates a million hours of combat experience in three days. No living pilot can do it that fast. Now imagine: such an aircraft is already flying over Europe.

In May of this year, the first European fighter jet with artificial intelligence on board, the Swedish Gripen E, took to the skies over the Baltic Sea. It was not just a flight: there was an insurance pilot in the cockpit, but he did not even touch the steering wheel. All control was carried out through AI, developed by the German defense startup Helsing.

In a matter of days, this artificial intelligence has pumped more than a million virtual flight hours — such a result is impossible even for the most experienced pilots. This is made possible by powerful computing and real-time simulation of combat situations.

Such technologies can radically change the face of aviation battles. Imagine how AI instantly processes radar data, chooses the best routes, recognizes threats and responds to them faster than a human can figure out. And such aircraft can also be used in conjunction with manned ones — as a "smart cover" or a scout.

This is not a fantasy of the future, but a reality right now. And if development continues at the same pace, then European aviation can reach a new level of defense capability — without unnecessary risks to the lives of pilots.

Germany is close to buying the Israeli BlueWhale unmanned submarine

BlueWhale submarine

Germany and Israel are in the final stages of negotiations on the possible purchase of an autonomous unmanned BlueWhale submarine developed by the Israeli company Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). It is reported that negotiations between the two countries have reached an advanced stage, which may lead to one of the most significant contracts in the field of underwater technologies in recent years.

Germany's interest in BlueWhale arose against the background of growing threats in the underwater area, especially after numerous incidents of damage to underwater communications and increased activity of foreign submarines in the Baltic Sea. The German Navy has long expressed interest in advanced solutions in the field of underwater surveillance and anti-submarine defense.

Last year, the Bundeswehr conducted two weeks of intensive BlueWhale testing as part of its Operational Experiment (OPEX) program. These tests were conducted with the participation of Israeli specialists and the German defense company Atlas Elektronik. The test area was not chosen by chance — the Baltic Sea is considered one of the most difficult waters for underwater navigation and sonar surveillance.

The BlueWhale unmanned submarine is a high-tech AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) type device capable of carrying out long-term missions of exploration, monitoring and detection of other underwater objects without the need for constant control from the surface. Its potential acquisition could be an important step in modernizing Germany's submarine forces and improving the country's maritime security.

Sweden is exploring the possibility of purchasing French frigates to strengthen its presence in the Baltic Sea

In the context of growing military activity in the Baltic region and worsening geopolitical tensions, Sweden is considering the possibility of acquiring French defensive frigates to modernize and strengthen its fleet. This decision is related to the country's intention to increase the level of defense capability against the background of threats from Russia and to ensure stability within the framework of NATO and bilateral partnerships.

According to Swedish sources, modern frigates of the FREMM family (Front Line frigate for Multi-Mission), developed by the French shipyard Naval Group, are of interest. These ships are highly multifunctional and can be used in both anti-submarine, surface and air defense, which makes them ideally suited for the conditions of the Baltic Sea.

Sweden, despite its recent accession to NATO, continues to develop its own naval forces, striving for greater independence in ensuring regional security. The inclusion of French frigates in the Swedish fleet could be an important step in this direction, especially given the limited capabilities of the current fleet of ships.

The potential deal also opens up prospects for deepening military-technical cooperation between Paris and Stockholm, as well as strengthening European strategic sovereignty. The acquisition of frigates from France, as opposed to the purchase of American systems, is also in line with Sweden's policy of diversifying arms suppliers and reducing dependence on the United States.

A final decision on a possible purchase has not yet been made, but preliminary negotiations and a technical assessment of the ships have already begun. If the deal goes through, the new frigates will become a key element of the renewed Swedish Navy and will significantly change the balance of power in the Baltic Sea.

Danish military introduces autonomous sailboats to patrol the Baltic and North Seas

Denmark relies on innovative defense technologies by introducing robotic sailboats for maritime surveillance. Four Voyager-class unmanned vessels have been launched by the Danish armed Forces for three months of testing in the Baltic and North Seas. These unique vessels look like ordinary sailboats — the red and white flag of Denmark proudly flies on their sails. However, the appearance of tradition hides advanced technology: each vessel is 10 meters (about 30 feet) long, they are completely autonomous and do not require a crew.

Developed by the Alameda, California-based Saildrone company, these sailboats are equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and communication systems that allow them to collect data on the state of the marine environment, monitor ship movement and ensure safety in the waters of Denmark and NATO. Their main task is to patrol waters, control borders and maintain situational awareness without the involvement of people on board.

Operational tests will make it possible to evaluate the effectiveness of such systems in real conditions and may become the beginning of a wider use of unmanned offshore platforms for defense purposes. This project also demonstrates the commitment of NATO countries to modernize their fleets with environmentally friendly and cost-effective solutions.

On May 27, 2025, the British Royal Air Force (RAF) reported the interception of a Russian Il-20M reconnaissance aircraft that approached NATO airspace over the Baltic Sea. The incident occurred on Saturday, May 24, near the northeastern border of Polish airspace.

Two Typhoon FGR4 fighter jets have been alerted from the Malbork Airbase in Northern Poland, where they are deployed as part of the British Operation Chessman. The interception was carried out as part of the enhanced NATO Air Policing (eAP) mission. Before the British fighters appeared, the Il-20M was already followed by three pairs of NATO aircraft.

The actions of the RAF Typhoon demonstrate the high readiness and efficiency of NATO forces in ensuring the security of the alliance's airspace. The Russian Il-20M, which is an electronic reconnaissance aircraft, is often used to collect information about the military activity of NATO countries, which causes increased attention and an operational response from the alliance.

The incident highlights the ongoing tension and the need for constant monitoring of air borders in the Baltic Sea region, which remains one of the key strategic areas in Europe. The mission of Operation Chessman and other NATO patrols are aimed at preventing violations of airspace and maintaining stability in the region.

No "Russian Trace" Found in Baltic Sea Cable Break

Recent investigations into the underwater cable breaks in the Baltic Sea have revealed that there is no evidence of Russian involvement, contrary to initial speculations. Intelligence services from the United States and several European countries are increasingly aligning their conclusions, suggesting that the damage was likely accidental rather than a deliberate act of sabotage by Russia.

The Washington Post reported that the consensus among intelligence agencies is shifting away from the theory that Russia orchestrated the cable disruptions. This development comes after extensive analysis and examination of the damaged cables, which did not yield any indications of foul play or intentional interference.

The Baltic Sea is a critical region for underwater communication cables, which are essential for internet connectivity and data transmission between Europe and other parts of the world. The initial suspicion of Russian involvement stemmed from the ongoing geopolitical tensions and Russia's past actions in the region. However, the lack of concrete evidence has led investigators to consider other possibilities, including natural causes or accidental damage from maritime activities.

The shift in the narrative underscores the importance of thorough investigations and the need for evidence-based conclusions in matters of national security. It also highlights the complexities involved in maintaining and securing underwater infrastructure, which is vulnerable to both natural and man-made threats.

As the investigations continue, the focus will likely turn to enhancing the resilience and security of underwater cables to prevent future disruptions, regardless of their cause. This includes improving monitoring systems, implementing better maintenance practices, and developing contingency plans to ensure minimal disruption to communication services.
