The European Union has invested a record 343 billion euros in defense — and is ready to spend even more

Joint military exercises of NATO countries

343 billion euros per year — what does it give Europe

The European Union spent a record 343 billion euros (about $402 billion) on defense last year. It's not just a number, it's a signal. According to a new report from the European Defense Agency, spending has exceeded all forecasts. And this is not a one-time surge: Europe has taken up the task of strengthening its defenses in earnest.

Now every sixth euro in the state budgets of the EU countries goes to the army, air defense, equipment and training of soldiers.

Why are they spending more than they planned?

Europe used to rely on American protection. Now the situation is changing. The conflict in Ukraine, rising tensions in Eastern Europe, and uncertainty in relations with the United States have forced countries to rethink their priorities.

Many countries — from Poland to Finland — have dramatically increased their arms purchases, are restoring stocks, and are modernizing their armies. It's not just imports: the EU is actively developing its own defense industry in order to be less dependent on supplies from overseas.

What will happen in 2025 — 381 billion in plans

The agency predicts that in 2025 the volume of expenses will grow to 381 billion euros (446 billion dollars). This is 11% more than last year. This growth is not just a reaction to the crisis. This is a long-term strategy: Europe wants to be able to defend itself, even if external support proves limited.

A lot of money is being spent not only on new tanks and planes, but also on logistics, communications, cybersecurity, and joint exercises.

The money goes not only for weapons

Part of the funds is directed to the restoration of ammunition supplies that were sent to Ukraine. Part of it is for the training of reservists, the modernization of air defense systems and the creation of fast—reacting forces. Attention is also being paid to infrastructure: roads, railways, ports — so that equipment can be quickly transferred to where it is needed.

Now Europe is building not only power, but also resilience.

Rheinmetall invests over a billion euros in a new plant in Bulgaria for the production of gunpowder and NATO shells

Production of 155 mm artillery shells

The largest defense investment in Southeastern Europe

The German defense concern Rheinmetall has announced a large—scale project - the construction of a new plant in Bulgaria. The investment volume will exceed one billion euros, making it one of the largest recent defense initiatives in Southeastern Europe. The new complex will specialize in the production of ammunition, including propellant powder and 155 mm artillery shells, standard for the armies of NATO countries.

This move strengthens Rheinmetall's presence in the region and responds to the growing demand for ammunition.

Production of gunpowder and artillery shells for the NATO armies

The plant will become part of Rheinmetall's expanding European ammunition production network, designed to reduce the alliance's dependence on external supplies. The production of propellant powders is a critically important stage of the projectile manufacturing cycle, previously concentrated mainly in Western Europe.

Now, with the deployment of facilities in Bulgaria, the concern will provide more stable and faster logistics for the countries of the Eastern flank of NATO, including Romania, Northern Macedonia, Ukraine and Bulgaria itself.

Bulgaria's strategic importance for supply chains

Bulgaria was not chosen by chance: the country has a favorable geographical location, a well-developed transport infrastructure and experience in the production of military equipment. In addition, its membership in NATO and the EU ensures the necessary level of security and regulatory stability.

Localization of production in Bulgaria will also make it possible to respond more quickly to the needs of armies in conditions of intense hostilities and reduce the risks associated with transporting ready-made ammunition over long distances.

Strengthening European combat readiness and independence

The Rheinmetall project directly supports the initiatives of the European Union and NATO to increase combat readiness and create sustainable supply chains for ammunition. Given the chronic shortage of shells in Western countries after supplies to the conflict zone, such investments are becoming strategically important.

The new plant will not only strengthen the region's defense industry, but will also create hundreds of highly skilled jobs, stimulating Bulgaria's economic development.

Germany is going to dramatically increase its power: fighter jets, thousands of armored vehicles and the Merz dream army

Germany is preparing for a large—scale military breakthrough - and we are talking about multibillion-dollar purchases that could change the face of European defense. According to sources from the Reuters news agency, the country plans to buy:

- 20 new Eurofighter fighters,

- up to 3,000 Boxer armored personnel carriers,

- and up to 3,500 Patria infantry fighting vehicles.

This is not just an upgrade of the fleet, it is an attempt to build the most powerful land army in Europe. And the main architect of this idea is Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who wants Germany to stop depending on the United States and take on a serious role in ensuring security on the continent.

Why now? Because after Ukraine, rising tensions with Russia, and instability in transatlantic relations, more and more Europeans are wondering: will America come to the rescue if war breaks out? Merz thinks it's impossible to take risks. Germany must be ready to fight on its own, and for this we need a modern, mobile and well-armed army.

Boxer is a heavy armored vehicle capable of withstanding minefields and drone attacks. The Patria is a lighter but faster combat vehicle, ideal for quick maneuvers. And the Eurofighter are fifth—generation fighters that will cover all this ground power from the air.

Of course, all this will cost tens of billions of euros. But in Berlin they think it's better to pay now than to pay with blood later.

This plan is not just a military reform. This is a geopolitical signal: Germany no longer wants to be a passive player. She wants to be a force to be reckoned with, inside and outside NATO.

A European fighter jet with artificial intelligence took off over the Baltic for the first time — the war could change forever

Imagine a fighter jet that doesn't sleep, doesn't get tired, doesn't panic, and accumulates a million hours of combat experience in three days. No living pilot can do it that fast. Now imagine: such an aircraft is already flying over Europe.

In May of this year, the first European fighter jet with artificial intelligence on board, the Swedish Gripen E, took to the skies over the Baltic Sea. It was not just a flight: there was an insurance pilot in the cockpit, but he did not even touch the steering wheel. All control was carried out through AI, developed by the German defense startup Helsing.

In a matter of days, this artificial intelligence has pumped more than a million virtual flight hours — such a result is impossible even for the most experienced pilots. This is made possible by powerful computing and real-time simulation of combat situations.

Such technologies can radically change the face of aviation battles. Imagine how AI instantly processes radar data, chooses the best routes, recognizes threats and responds to them faster than a human can figure out. And such aircraft can also be used in conjunction with manned ones — as a "smart cover" or a scout.

This is not a fantasy of the future, but a reality right now. And if development continues at the same pace, then European aviation can reach a new level of defense capability — without unnecessary risks to the lives of pilots.

The United States approved the sale of Tomahawk missiles to the Netherlands for $2.19 billion

The Defense and Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on April 25, 2025, the potential sale of Tomahawk land-based attack missiles and related equipment to the Netherlands. The deal is estimated at $2.19 billion (or £1.76 billion). This step highlights the strengthening of defense cooperation between the United States and the Netherlands, as well as the latter's desire to modernize its armed forces.

According to an official DSCA notification, the Netherlands has requested the purchase of up to **163 Tomahawk Block V All Up Rounds (AUR)**, **12 Tomahawk Block IV AUR missiles**, **10 Tomahawk Tactical Weapon Control Systems (TTWCS)** and **2 Tomahawk Block IV telemetry missiles**. The package also includes satellite communication terminals, secure broadcast systems, communication security devices, maintenance, staff training, spare parts and other logistical components.

The Tomahawk is a high—precision long-range cruise missile capable of hitting ground targets in almost any environment. Block V, the latest modification, is characterized by increased accuracy, the ability to re-aim in flight and adapt to modern warfare conditions.

The acquisition of Tomahawk missiles will significantly enhance the Netherlands' long-range strike capabilities. This is especially important in the context of the growing threats from Russia and other potential adversaries in the region. Tomahawk missiles will allow the Netherlands to effectively participate in joint operations with its NATO allies, providing a quick and accurate response to any threats.

In addition, the deal demonstrates the US commitment to strengthening the defense capabilities of its European partners. In the context of current geopolitical tensions, such steps play a key role in ensuring the alliance's collective security.

Worth $2.19 billion, this deal will be one of the largest in the history of defense cooperation between the United States and the Netherlands. It will not only strengthen the country's military capabilities, but also create new jobs as part of the maintenance and training program. In addition, the integration of Tomahawk systems will enhance the compatibility of the Dutch armed forces with technologies from other NATO countries.

The purchase of Tomahawk may be a signal to other European countries about the need to modernize their arsenals. This is especially relevant in light of current security challenges, such as increased Russian military activity and the development of new types of weapons.

French Rafale fighter jets demonstrate their might at exercises in Sweden

For the first time, French Rafale multirole fighters, including modifications capable of carrying nuclear weapons, are involved in joint military exercises in Sweden. This event was a landmark step in strengthening defense cooperation between the two countries and demonstrating France's military might beyond its borders.

The exercises are aimed at practicing the rapid dispersal of fighters in Sweden, which is a key element of modern tactics to counter potential threats. This strategy minimizes the risks to aviation in the event of an attack on the main air bases and increases the operational flexibility of the armed forces.

Rafale fighters, known for their versatility and high combat performance, play an important role in ensuring NATO's security. They are capable of performing a wide range of tasks, including air support, reconnaissance, air defense, and even nuclear deterrence. The participation of these vehicles in the Swedish exercises underlines France's desire to strengthen its position in Europe and demonstrate its readiness for collective defense.

Sweden, which is actively modernizing its armed forces and seeking closer cooperation with NATO, has provided its territory for the maneuvers. It also demonstrates the country's growing role as an important partner in ensuring the security of the region.

Such exercises have not only military, but also political significance. In the context of growing tensions in Europe, the demonstration of unity between the participating countries is becoming an important signal for potential opponents. In addition, it is an opportunity to share experiences and improve the compatibility of the armed forces of different States.

Working out how to disperse fighters is especially relevant in light of modern threats, such as the use of precision weapons and drones. The rapid transfer of aircraft to alternate airfields makes it possible to increase the survival rate of aircraft and ensure the continuity of combat operations.

Thus, the participation of the French Rafale in the exercises in Sweden symbolizes the deepening of cooperation between the countries and demonstrates their readiness to jointly defend the European continent.

Belgium strengthens air defense with surface-to-air missiles

SAMP/T system

In the face of changing European security, Belgium has decided to strengthen its air defenses with modern surface-to-air missile systems. According to the latest data, Belgium is preparing to purchase the SAMP/T system developed by MBDA in collaboration with Thales. This decision is intended to fill a strategic gap in the country's defense system.

The SAMP/T (Surface-to-Air Missile Platform / Tactical) system is one of the most advanced European air defense systems. It is designed to protect against various types of aerial threats, including airplanes, helicopters, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles. SAMP/T can be integrated with other defense systems, allowing for a comprehensive air defense system.

SAMP/T is based on the Aster missile system, which has already proven itself in the armed forces of several European countries. The system is equipped with high-tech radars and fire control systems, which allows it to effectively detect and neutralize aerial threats at long distances. SAMP/T can be used both in stationary and mobile mode, which makes it flexible and adaptable to various conditions.

MBDA, one of the largest European manufacturers of rocket technology, has developed the SAMP/T system in collaboration with Thales, the world's leading manufacturer of electronic systems for the military and civilian markets. This collaboration has combined the advanced technologies and expertise of the two companies, creating one of the most effective air defense systems in the world.

The purchase of the SAMP/T system is an important step in strengthening Belgium's defense system. This will allow the country to more effectively counter modern air threats and ensure the safety of its citizens. In addition, this decision underlines Belgium's commitment to cooperation with other European countries in the field of defense and security.
