Possible sabotage on the Dutch railway network during the NATO summit

On Tuesday, Dutch authorities were investigating possible sabotage on the railway network after a power outage at the country's main airport restricted train traffic at a time when a two-day summit of NATO leaders was opening in the Netherlands.

Acting Justice Minister David van Wil told a NATO Public Forum that investigators are considering the possibility of deliberately setting fire to about 30 railway cables.

"It could be a group of activists. It could be another country. It could be anything," Van Wyl said at the round table.Due to the damage, train services were disrupted, and train traffic stopped between Schiphol Airport and the capital Amsterdam.

The Netherlands became the first foreign country to equip AH-64 Apache helicopters with AGM-179A missiles

AH-64 Apache

The Netherlands has become the first foreign country to receive approval to equip its AH-64 Apache combat helicopters with American AGM-179A JAGM (Joint Air-to-Ground Missile) missiles. The U.S. State Department has approved the potential sale of nearly 300 missiles and related equipment worth about $215 million, marking an important milestone in modernizing the Dutch armed forces and strengthening their defense capabilities.

The AGM-179A JAGM missiles are modern high-precision air—to-ground weapons equipped with a dual-mode guidance system - semi-active laser and millimeter-wave radar. This ensures high effectiveness of hitting both fixed and mobile targets in all weather conditions. The range of the missiles reaches 8 kilometers, which significantly expands the capabilities of the AH-64 Apache helicopters in combat missions.

The delivery of missiles will allow the Netherlands to significantly increase the firepower and tactical flexibility of its helicopters, which is especially important in the context of growing regional tensions and the need to counter modern threats, including armored vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicles. In addition, the integration of the AGM-179A with the AH-64E Apache helicopters will ensure compatibility with advanced NATO systems, strengthening defense cooperation and interoperability with allies.

As part of the deal, the Netherlands will also receive training missiles, spare parts, maintenance equipment and technical support, which will ensure the full implementation and operation of the new weapons. The final approval of the deal is expected after consideration by the US Congress.

The Netherlands continues to support the supply of F-35 components to Israel through the port of Rotterdam

F-35 fighter jets

Despite court injunctions and protests from human rights organizations, the Netherlands continues to play a key role in supplying components for F-35 fighter jets to Israel. According to the NGO, Maersk ships transporting parts between the United States and Israel pass through the port of Rotterdam, which remains an important transit hub in the "death supply chain" for the Israeli Air Force.

The Hague Court of Appeal ruled in 2023 to stop exporting F-35 spare parts to Israel due to concerns that these aircraft are being used in military operations in the Gaza Strip that violate international humanitarian law. Nevertheless, despite court decisions and criticism from human rights activists, the Dutch Ministry of Defense has signed contracts with Israeli companies, continuing the supply and modernization of weapons.

The port of Rotterdam, the largest in Europe, remains a strategic point for transporting F-35 components, which raises concerns among activists pointing to Dutch complicity in armed conflicts in the Middle East. Organizations such as Oxfam Netherlands are calling on the Government to end cooperation with Israel, citing high risks of human rights violations.

At the same time, the Dutch Government stresses the importance of maintaining defense cooperation with its allies and modernizing its armed forces to ensure the security of the country and the region.

The Netherlands is strengthening its ground forces: a contract has been signed for the supply of 46 Leopard 2 A8 tanks

 Leopard 2

The Dutch Ministry of Defense has announced the signing of an important contract with the KMW + Nexter Defense Systems (KNDS) concern for the supply of 46 Leopard 2 main battle tanks of the latest A8 modification. This decision became part of a large-scale modernization program of the country's ground forces and is aimed at replacing outdated armored vehicles with modern platforms that meet the requirements of the 21st century.

The Leopard 2 A8 tanks are considered to be among the most advanced in their class. They are equipped with improved dynamic protection, a digital fire control system, an integrated active protection system and an upgraded chassis, which increases their survival and combat effectiveness in today's full range of conflicts.

The delivery is scheduled for the period from 2028 to 2031, which will make it possible to carry out the necessary training of crews and modernize the logistical and technical base for servicing new machines.

The contract also became an important step in the framework of EU cooperation in the field of defense. KNDS, a joint venture between Germany's Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and France's Nexter, is a symbol of European military—technical integration and the pursuit of strategic autonomy.

This acquisition demonstrates the growing attention of NATO countries to strengthening the grouping on the eastern flank in response to the changing geopolitical situation and the strengthening of the Russian military presence in the region.

F-35 fighter jets transmitted secret data in real time

The Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) and Lockheed Martin Skunk Works have achieved what the company calls a "breakthrough" in the field of F-35 fighter interaction by successfully transmitting classified real-time data between a Dutch F-35 fighter in flight and a domestic command and control system during the Ramstein Flag exercise.

This is the first-ever real-time exchange of classified data involving F-35s outside the United States and a significant step forward in multidisciplinary operations (MDOS) within NATO.

In the live flight scenario, the Dutch F-35, Working in a simulated Anti-Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) environment, we detected and tracked several simulated threats. Targeting data was transmitted via a Multifunctional Advanced Datalink to Lockheed Martin's Open Systems Gateway (OSG), which transmitted information to Keystone, the Dutch Command and Control System (C2). Keystone then sent a rocket artillery platform to strike and destroy a ground target.

The United States approved the sale of Tomahawk missiles to the Netherlands for $2.19 billion

The Defense and Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on April 25, 2025, the potential sale of Tomahawk land-based attack missiles and related equipment to the Netherlands. The deal is estimated at $2.19 billion (or £1.76 billion). This step highlights the strengthening of defense cooperation between the United States and the Netherlands, as well as the latter's desire to modernize its armed forces.

According to an official DSCA notification, the Netherlands has requested the purchase of up to **163 Tomahawk Block V All Up Rounds (AUR)**, **12 Tomahawk Block IV AUR missiles**, **10 Tomahawk Tactical Weapon Control Systems (TTWCS)** and **2 Tomahawk Block IV telemetry missiles**. The package also includes satellite communication terminals, secure broadcast systems, communication security devices, maintenance, staff training, spare parts and other logistical components.

The Tomahawk is a high—precision long-range cruise missile capable of hitting ground targets in almost any environment. Block V, the latest modification, is characterized by increased accuracy, the ability to re-aim in flight and adapt to modern warfare conditions.

The acquisition of Tomahawk missiles will significantly enhance the Netherlands' long-range strike capabilities. This is especially important in the context of the growing threats from Russia and other potential adversaries in the region. Tomahawk missiles will allow the Netherlands to effectively participate in joint operations with its NATO allies, providing a quick and accurate response to any threats.

In addition, the deal demonstrates the US commitment to strengthening the defense capabilities of its European partners. In the context of current geopolitical tensions, such steps play a key role in ensuring the alliance's collective security.

Worth $2.19 billion, this deal will be one of the largest in the history of defense cooperation between the United States and the Netherlands. It will not only strengthen the country's military capabilities, but also create new jobs as part of the maintenance and training program. In addition, the integration of Tomahawk systems will enhance the compatibility of the Dutch armed forces with technologies from other NATO countries.

The purchase of Tomahawk may be a signal to other European countries about the need to modernize their arsenals. This is especially relevant in light of current security challenges, such as increased Russian military activity and the development of new types of weapons.

The Netherlands has announced a large-scale modernization of the armed forces: 17 key projects for the coming years

Dutch soldiers on training exercises

The Dutch Ministry of Defense has submitted to Parliament a "letter A" outlining plans to equip the country's armed forces in the coming years. The document provides for the implementation of 17 projects aimed at modernizing the army, with total expenditures of at least 1.45 billion euros (1.65 billion US dollars). These initiatives cover a wide range of areas, from the purchase of anti-torpedo torpedoes to the replacement of standard assault rifles and the equipping of a heavy infantry brigade with tracked armored vehicles.

One of the key projects will be the purchase of anti-torpedo torpedoes designed to protect Dutch Navy ships from underwater threats. These systems are expected to be operational by 2029, which will significantly enhance the fleet's anti-submarine defense capabilities.

Another important step will be to replace the assault rifles currently in service with the army. This solution is designed to provide military personnel with modern weapons that meet current requirements for accuracy, reliability and ergonomics. The transition to the new model will begin this decade.

The third significant project is related to equipping the heavy infantry brigade with tracked armored vehicles of general purpose. These vehicles will be used to perform a wide range of tasks, including troop transportation, reconnaissance, and combat support. They will enhance the mobility and security of units operating in difficult conditions.

The total costs for all 17 projects will amount to at least 1.45 billion euros, which is the lower end of the budget range for each of them. This highlights the Netherlands' commitment to investing in modern technology and equipment to enhance the army's combat capability.

Such initiatives are aimed not only at strengthening national defense, but also at ensuring compatibility with NATO allies. Modern weapons and equipment will allow the Netherlands to participate more effectively in international missions and operations.

The modernization plans demonstrate the Netherlands' commitment to maintaining a high level of defense capability in the face of growing geopolitical challenges. The introduction of new weapons and equipment systems will allow the country to maintain its role as a reliable partner within the NATO alliance.

In addition, these projects will create new jobs and stimulate the development of the defense industry in the country. The successful implementation of the programs can also become an example for other States seeking to modernize their armed forces.

The Netherlands is steadily moving towards strengthening its armed forces through large-scale investments in modern technologies and equipment. The plans outlined in Letter A underscore the strategic importance of these initiatives to ensure the security of the country and its allies. The implementation of these projects will be an important stage in the development of the Dutch defense capability in the coming years.

The Netherlands has strengthened maritime security with advanced technology

The Dutch Ministry of Defense has contracted this new partnership to enhance its maritime security and surveillance capabilities.

RNLN will use a surveillance vessel to conduct security operations in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the North Sea of the Netherlands, both above and below water. Using advanced technologies such as unmanned vehicles, this will allow RNLN to monitor vessel activity in the North Sea and inspect critical underwater infrastructure such as cables and pipelines.

Fugro and Damen have established a joint venture to supply the vessel and crew on a two-year charter with the possibility of an extension for another year (four years in total). The charter agreement, concluded during a public tender, is scheduled to enter into force in the first half of 2025. The vessel that will carry out the charter is the Damen FCS 5009, which offers unsurpassed qualities thanks to the Sea Axe bow, developed in collaboration with the University of Delft.

The Netherlands signs a contract for the production of new high-speed boats FFI

FFI (Future Fast Interceptors)

On March 10, 2025, the Dutch Ministry of Defense signed a contract with the De Haas shipyards in Rotterdam for the production of 13 new FFI (Future Fast Interceptors) high-speed boats. These boats are designed to replace some of the FRISC (Fast Raiding, Interception and Special Forces Craft) inflatable boats that are in service with the Royal Netherlands Navy.

The new FFI boats will significantly outperform FRISC in a number of parameters. They will be faster, better armed, and have a longer range. The FFI will be able to carry two machine—gun emplacements, one at the bow and one at the stern, which will significantly enhance their combat capabilities. In addition, the boats will be equipped with powerful electronic optical systems and high-speed navigation systems, which will improve their ability to maneuver and perform special operations.

One of the key features of FFI is their ability to reduce engine noise, which makes them more stealthy compared to FRISCOEIn addition, the new boats will have improved shock-absorbing seats and shock sensors, which will reduce the physical strain on the crew and passengers.

The FFI will be able to carry up to 12 people, including the pilot, which is 50% more than the FRISCS, which are limited to eight passengers. This increase in capacity also applies to cargo space, which will allow for more equipment to be transported.

The new boats will be used not only by the Royal Netherlands Navy, but also by the ground forces, as well as the Naval Special Operations Forces (NLMARSOF) to carry out high-intensity special operations such as security screenings and anti-terrorist missions.

The Royal Netherlands Navy operates 48 FRISC boats, some of which will be replaced by new FFI.However, not all FRISCS will be decommissioned. One of them will be upgraded to extend its service life.In addition, several FRISC boats used for amphibious operations will be replaced in other ways, for example, using new amphibious vessels.

The choice of the Dutch shipyard De Haas Shipyards also contributes to the development of the national shipbuilding industry, although this was not a decisive factor. The first FFI boats are due to be handed over to the fleet in 3.5 years.

The FFI program is an important step in the modernization of the Dutch navy. The new FFI high-speed boats will provide significant improvements in combat capabilities and crew comfort, as well as strengthen the country's ability to perform special operations in the marine environment.

Names of 425,000 Suspected Nazi Collaborators in the Netherlands Published Online for the First Time

For the first time, the names of about 425,000 people suspected of collaborating with the Nazis during the German occupation of the Netherlands have been published on the Internet. These names belong to individuals who were investigated under a special legal system created at the end of World War II. Of these, more than 150,000 people have been punished in one way or another.

Previously, access to the full records of these investigations could only be obtained by visiting the National Archives of the Netherlands in The Hague. The Huygens Institute, which helped digitize the archive, argues that this was a major obstacle for people who want to explore the occupation of the Netherlands, which lasted from the invasion in 1940 to 1945.

The archive contains dossiers on war criminals, about 20,000 Dutch people who joined the German armed forces, and alleged members of the National Socialist Movement (NSB), the Dutch Nazi Party. However, it also contains the names of people who have been found innocent. This is because the archive consists of files from a Special Jurisdiction that has been investigating the activities of alleged collaborators since 1944.

The online database contains only the names of suspects, as well as their date and place of birth, which can only be searched using certain personal data. It does not specify whether a specific person was found guilty or what form of cooperation they were suspected of. However, it will tell users which file to request to see this information if they visit the National Archives. People accessing physical files must declare a legitimate interest in viewing them.

In the Netherlands, there has been some concern that personal information relating to a sensitive period of history is becoming publicly available, and therefore information published on the Internet was initially limited.

"I'm afraid there will be a very unpleasant reaction," Rinke Smedinga, whose father was a member of the NSB and worked at the Westerbork camp, from where people were deported to concentration camps, told the Dutch online publication DIT. "It needs to be anticipated. You can't just let this happen as a kind of social experiment."

Tom De Smet, director of the National Archives, told DIT that it is necessary to take into account the relatives of both collaborators and victims of the occupation. But he added, "Collaboration is still a major trauma. They don't talk about him. We hope that when the archives are opened, the taboo will be lifted."

In a letter to Parliament dated December 19, Culture Minister Eppo Bruins wrote: "The openness of archives is crucial to overcome the consequences of the difficult common past [of the Netherlands] and for its understanding by society." He said the amount of information available online would be limited due to privacy concerns, and those who visit the archive in person would not be allowed to make copies. The Bruins have expressed a desire to change the law to allow more information to be publicly disclosed.

The online database website states that the names of people who may still be alive are not listed online.
