Australia will soon receive its new Apaches: the first helicopters will arrive this year

Australia is one step closer to upgrading its army aviation: the first four of the 29 ordered AH-64E Apache attack helicopters will arrive in the country before the end of 2025. These machines are currently undergoing final assembly at the Boeing plant in the USA.

The new Apaches will replace the outdated fleet of ARH Tiger combat helicopters, which have served the Australian ground forces for a long time. After delivery, they will become the basis of the Australian Army's strike aviation, significantly increasing its combat capabilities.

All deliveries are carried out under a major contract of the LAND 4503 program, signed in December 2021, which provides for a complete replacement of the fleet by 2028. The AH-64E is the most modern version of the legendary Apache, equipped with improved control, navigation and communication systems. One of the key advantages of the new model is its ability to integrate into a network, including interaction with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for real-time data exchange, as well as the ability to hit not only ground but also surface targets.

To ensure the rapid development of technology, Australian pilots and technicians are already undergoing intensive training at the US Air Force base.

The Netherlands became the first foreign country to equip AH-64 Apache helicopters with AGM-179A missiles

AH-64 Apache

The Netherlands has become the first foreign country to receive approval to equip its AH-64 Apache combat helicopters with American AGM-179A JAGM (Joint Air-to-Ground Missile) missiles. The U.S. State Department has approved the potential sale of nearly 300 missiles and related equipment worth about $215 million, marking an important milestone in modernizing the Dutch armed forces and strengthening their defense capabilities.

The AGM-179A JAGM missiles are modern high-precision air—to-ground weapons equipped with a dual-mode guidance system - semi-active laser and millimeter-wave radar. This ensures high effectiveness of hitting both fixed and mobile targets in all weather conditions. The range of the missiles reaches 8 kilometers, which significantly expands the capabilities of the AH-64 Apache helicopters in combat missions.

The delivery of missiles will allow the Netherlands to significantly increase the firepower and tactical flexibility of its helicopters, which is especially important in the context of growing regional tensions and the need to counter modern threats, including armored vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicles. In addition, the integration of the AGM-179A with the AH-64E Apache helicopters will ensure compatibility with advanced NATO systems, strengthening defense cooperation and interoperability with allies.

As part of the deal, the Netherlands will also receive training missiles, spare parts, maintenance equipment and technical support, which will ensure the full implementation and operation of the new weapons. The final approval of the deal is expected after consideration by the US Congress.

Unlocking the potential of Red Wolf modular weapons for AH-1Z helicopters

The US Marine Corps may receive a key new tool for striking from a distance thanks to mysterious missiles included in the modular Red Wolf family of "firing effects" from L3Harris. These unique systems open up new horizons not only in the field of kinetic weapons, but also in the field of non-kinetic tasks such as communication relay.

Red Wolf is a family of multifunctional devices that can be configured for various tasks. First of all, these systems are designed for use on AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters, which have long been considered the backbone of the US Marine Corps aviation. However, the capabilities of Red Wolf go far beyond the classic missile weapons.

Red Wolf systems can be configured to perform kinetic tasks — hitting targets at a distance using precision-guided warheads. But their uniqueness lies in their ability to adapt to non-kinetic roles, such as deploying communications relay nodes, collecting data, or even interfering with an adversary. This makes Red Wolf a universal solution for modern combat conditions.

The key advantage of Red Wolf is its modularity. This means that the same unit can be retrofitted for different tasks, depending on the operational need. For example, during one mission, the system can be used to destroy enemy equipment, and in another, to provide temporary communication between units in radio silence.

This flexibility allows the Marine Corps to significantly increase the effectiveness of its AH-1Z attack helicopters. Now they can not only perform combat missions, but also play an important role in providing communications and intelligence, becoming a universal tool on the battlefield.

The introduction of Red Wolf could be an important step in the development of technology for the Marine Corps. Experts note that such systems can be easily adapted to other platforms, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and ground vehicles. This opens the door to new opportunities in the field of tactical operations and logistics.

In addition, the use of non-kinetic functions, such as communication relay, can be especially useful in conditions of difficult terrain or in the absence of fixed communication systems. This will allow you to maintain communication between units even in the most remote areas.

For the US Marine Corps, the introduction of Red Wolf will be an important step in modernizing its strike capabilities. Systems of this type can not only improve the accuracy and effectiveness of strikes, but also expand the range of tasks performed. This is especially important in the context of modern conflicts, where rapid adaptation to changing conditions is required.

British Apache and Wildcat helicopters arrive in Finland for joint exercises

British AH-64E Apache attack helicopters and AW159 Wildcat multirole helicopters have been deployed to Finland as part of a large-scale effort to strengthen defense capabilities and increase the level of joint training. This deployment was part of the Finnish Army's spring exercises aimed at practicing tactical cooperation with the allies.

According to a statement from the Finnish Defense Forces, two squadrons of AH-64E Apache attack helicopters and one squadron of AW159 Wildcat have successfully concentrated in the city of Shakyula. These vehicles represent an advanced level of aviation technology capable of performing a wide range of tasks, from ground support to reconnaissance and air defense.

The deployment of British helicopters marks the arrival of the first Allied helicopter units as part of the spring training cycle. This event highlights the importance of cooperation between Finland and the UK in the face of growing geopolitical challenges in the region.

The exercises are aimed at increasing the level of compatibility between the armed forces of the two countries, as well as at practicing coordination of actions in a realistic confrontation. British Apache helicopters, known for their power and precision, will be used to simulate strikes on ground targets, while Wildcats will provide reconnaissance and patrol support.

Finland, which joined NATO in 2023, is actively strengthening its defense capabilities through close cooperation with its allies. The joint exercises allow not only to increase combat capability, but also to demonstrate the determination of the alliance countries to protect the security of the region.

The arrival of the British helicopters underscores Finland's strategic importance as a key NATO partner in northern Europe. Increased military cooperation between the alliance's countries is aimed at ensuring stability in the Baltic Sea region, especially in the face of growing tensions over Russia's actions.

Experts note that the participation of modern technology, such as Apache and Wildcat, significantly increases the effectiveness of the exercises. These helicopters are equipped with advanced fire control, electronic warfare and surveillance systems, making them indispensable in modern combat operations.

The current exercises will be an important step in the development of a long-term partnership between Finland and the UK. They can also become the basis for expanding the scope of joint operations with other NATO countries, which will strengthen the collective defense of the alliance.

The exercises are scheduled to end in late spring, and it is expected that they will demonstrate a high level of readiness and coherence among the participants. This event will be another confirmation that the NATO countries are ready to work together to protect their interests.
