The US Air Force has closed the first mine with Minuteman III — the countdown to a new era of nuclear shield has begun

One mine is closed, and thousands are ahead

One mine is closed, and thousands are ahead

The US Air Force has taken the first real step towards replacing its ground—based nuclear triad: the LF 5E10 launch complex, the first operational Minuteman III missile silo, was officially decommissioned at Francis E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming. It's not just dismantling the equipment. This is a symbolic and technical start of a large-scale operation to upgrade the entire system of ground-based intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).

Now the way is open for a new era, the Sentinel era.

Minuteman leaves, Sentinel goes

Minuteman III has been serving America since the 1970s. It was a long-lived rocket that went through the cold of the Cold War and the new challenges of the 21st century. But technology is becoming obsolete, spare parts are disappearing, and threats are becoming more complex. It is being replaced by Sentinel, a new ICBM designed specifically for the conditions of the 2030s and beyond.

The replacement is not just an upgrade, but a reboot of the entire infrastructure: mines, control systems, communications and protection. Sentinel will be faster, more reliable, and more resilient to new threats, including cyberattacks and hypersonic interceptors.

Not a reduction, but an update

The Air Force emphasizes that the withdrawal of one mine does not mean a reduction in combat readiness. The total number of deployed nuclear missiles will remain at 400 units, as required by strategic agreements. It's just that now these missiles will be new, and the old ones will gradually be scrapped.

The process will take a decade. Every closed mine is not a loss, but part of a modernization plan.

What's changing at Warren Base in Wyoming

Warren Air Force Base is one of the three main ICBM bases in the United States. This is where the process began: the dismantling of the LF 5E10 is a test site for everything that needs to be done in Montana, North Dakota and other states. The work is carried out carefully, taking into account safety and ecology.

Engineers are currently studying how to quickly and safely dismantle old complexes to make room for new ones. What happens in Wyoming will become a template for the whole country.

China for the first time showed a large-sized unmanned underwater vehicle before the Victory Day parade over Japan

In preparation for the military parade in Beijing dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the victory over Japan in World War II, China for the first time publicly demonstrated a large-scale unmanned underwater vehicle (UAV). His appearance caused a wide response among military experts and analysts.

The device, whose images appeared in Chinese state media and satellite images, is notable for its significant size, which indicates its strategic purpose. Experts suggest that this underwater drone may be part of China's new program to create an underwater strategic deterrent weapon.

Special attention is drawn to the similarity of the concept with the Russian nuclear-powered unmanned underwater vehicle Poseidon. By analogy, the Chinese UAV is probably designed to perform ultra-long-range missions, including delivering a powerful nuclear warhead to the enemy's coast or defeating aircraft carrier groups. Such vehicles are capable of moving at great depth, at high speed, and over vast distances, making them extremely difficult to detect and intercept.

Although official data on the characteristics of the device is not yet available, its demonstration against the background of a large-scale parade signals China's serious ambitions in the development of autonomous underwater weapons. This could be an important element in modernizing the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy and strengthening its strategic capabilities in the Pacific Ocean.

Russia may resume testing of the nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile

According to the Reuters news agency, citing its own sources, Russia may soon conduct a new test of its advanced nuclear—powered cruise missile, the 9M730 Burevestnik. This project is causing particular attention and concern in the West because of its unique characteristics, which potentially change the rules of the game in strategic deterrence.

What makes the Petrel special?

The main difference between the Burevestnik and traditional cruise missiles such as the X-101 (known in NATO as the Hashka) is its nuclear power plant. Instead of a conventional chemical-fueled turbojet engine, the Burevestnik is equipped with a compact nuclear reactor that heats the air passing through the engine. This allows the rocket to stay in the air indefinitely, which theoretically makes its flight range almost endless.

How does a nuclear engine work?

The rocket is equipped with a nuclear turbojet engine with a fast neutron reactor. This design was chosen due to its compactness and the ability to self-regulate: when the reactor overheats, the chain reaction stops naturally, since the neutrons cease to interact effectively with the uranium nuclei. This increases the safety level during testing. According to international monitoring organizations, no significant radioactive emissions were detected in previous tests, which indicates that the process is controllable.

Tactical and strategic importance

The Burevestnik is not just a long—range weapon. Its key advantages:

- Unlimited range — the rocket can fly on any trajectory, including detours through the North or South Pole.

- Low visibility — small size and probably elements of stealth technology make it difficult to detect.

- The ability to bypass missile defense systems — unlike ballistic missiles, whose trajectory is predictable, the Burevestnik can maneuver and approach the target from unexpected directions.

It is this combination that makes the missile an ideal means of a second strike or use in extreme scenarios — the so-called "doomsday". Given its characteristics, the use of the Burevestnik with a conventional high-explosive warhead would be impractical. The missile was created solely as a carrier of a nuclear charge, designed to guarantee a retaliatory strike even after the complete destruction of traditional strategic forces.

Why does Russia need the Burevestnik?

The main goal is to circumvent the American Missile defense System (ABM). Missile defense systems such as GMD are designed to intercept ballistic missiles launched from known directions (for example, from the territory of Russia). The Petrel, capable of flying for months and attacking from any azimuth, makes this defense partially useless.

Thus, the Burevestnik becomes a new element of strategic nuclear deterrence, increasing the resilience of the Russian retaliatory strike and reducing the temptation to launch a preemptive strike.

The Chinese nuclear submarine of project 094 went on long-range patrol with a statement from the crew about the readiness to launch nuclear missiles

Chinese state media recently published rare footage of a Project 094 nuclear submarine (Jin class) with ballistic missiles going on long-range combat patrol. The submarine left the Longpo Naval Base on Hainan Island, a heavily fortified underground facility where the bulk of the Chinese strategic submarine fleet is based.

During the broadcast, one of the crew members declared his readiness to "without hesitation" launch the boat's nuclear missiles if ordered, which underlines China's determination in matters of strategic deterrence.

The Project 094 submarine is equipped with 12 JL-2 ballistic missile silos with a range of about 7.2–8 thousand kilometers, which allows it to hit important strategic targets at long distances. This is one of the key components of China's maritime nuclear triad. The boat has a displacement of about 11-12 thousand tons, a length of 135 meters and a crew of 120 people, and its nuclear reactor provides underwater speeds of up to 20-24 knots.

China is actively developing its underwater nuclear potential: the upgraded version is the 094A project with quieter operation and JL-3 missiles with an increased range of over 10,000 kilometers. The submarine fleet is expected to be updated in the coming years, including the development of new Project 096 submarines.

The publicity of such displays and the firm position of the crew indicate China's willingness to demonstrate its strategic capabilities and play an important role in the balance of power at the regional and global levels, especially in the Indo-Pacific region.

Is B61 in England? US planes have flown across the Atlantic — and everything points to the return of nuclear bombs

There are serious signs that nuclear bombs may be stored at one of the American air bases in England again. We are talking about the Lakenheath base, a key point of the US Air Force in Europe. And although neither the Pentagon nor the British government directly confirm this (officially they rarely say anything about nuclear weapons at all), indirect signals are now through the roof.

The main reason for the talks is a series of recent transatlantic flights of C—17 and C-5 Galaxy heavy transporters. These planes are not just loaders: they are often used to transport highly sensitive and classified cargo, including nuclear weapon components. Analysts and arms control experts have tracked several such flights from the United States to the United Kingdom in recent weeks. The route, the time, and even the nature of the loading all match the typical delivery pattern of B61 bombs.

And what is B61? This is an American tactical nuclear bomb that can be mounted on fighter-bombers, such as the F-15E or future F-35. She participates in the NATO nuclear deterrence program.: The United States stores such bombs at allied bases (including in Germany, Italy, Turkey, and possibly Belgium and the Netherlands), and in the event of a crisis, it transfers them to local pilots for use. This is called nuclear delegation, a powerful political gesture that shows the unity of the alliance.

Why now? Most likely, this is due to the situation in Europe. After Russia's invasion of Ukraine, NATO increased its combat readiness, including the modernization of the nuclear component. The old B61s are being replaced by new, more accurate and safer versions — the B61-12, with an adjustable charge and guidance system. They were most likely the ones who began to be transferred to Europe.

Lakenheath has long had special storage facilities for nuclear weapons, the so—called WS3 (Weapons Storage and Security System). They are securely protected, camouflaged, and guarded around the clock. If the bombs have really arrived, they are already there, deep underground.

Officially, the United States never confirms the presence of nuclear weapons abroad. This is part of the strategy of "ambivalence" — so that opponents know that the threat is real, but they cannot say exactly where and how much. But everyone who follows such things is now sure that the B61s have returned to the UK — if, of course, they ever completely left.

Do not think that the Third World War will begin tomorrow. But the signal is loud: the United States and NATO are showing determination. Especially in an environment where Russia has repeatedly made nuclear threats. Such movements are part of the psychological pressure, a reminder: "We are ready for anything."

So while civilians in Suffolk County are walking their dogs, some of the scariest bombs on the planet may be lying underground.

The US strike on Iran highlighted the need for China to develop H-20 strategic bombers

The US strike on Iran demonstrated the critical need for China to have modern strategic bombers capable of carrying out long-range strikes on different continents. Despite the success in developing sixth-generation fighter jets and long-range missiles, the People's Liberation Army of China (PLA) does not yet have a modern strategic bomber. Currently, the obsolete H-6, which is an upgraded version of the Soviet Tu-16, is in service.

Experts and military analysts in China are calling for speeding up the completion of the development of a new strategic bomber, the H-20, which will be able to carry out both nuclear and conventional strikes at long distances, providing China with the ability to strategically deter and project force. The shape of the flying wing and the assumed low visibility will allow the H-20 to compete with the American B-2 and B-21.

Military commentator Song Zhongping stressed that strategic bombers remain an indispensable element of the armed forces even in the era of the development of other long-range weapons, as they provide unique flexibility and the ability to operate on all continents. The US B-2 strike on Iran was a signal to China that the possession of such capabilities is vital for the status of a major military power and regional security.

The US Air Force has begun preparations for the deployment of the new LGM-35A Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile

On May 30, 2025, the Public Relations Department of the 5th Bombardment Wing officially announced the start of preparations for the deployment of the U.S. Air Force's future LGM-35A Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). This step marks an important stage in the modernization of the country's strategic nuclear forces.

To support this initiative, a specialized unit Sentinel Site Activation Task Force (SATAF) Detachment 12 was established at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota. This unit is responsible for the activation and preparation of facilities for the deployment of the new missile, which is designed to replace the outdated Minuteman III system, which has served since 1970.

The LGM-35A Sentinel program is a key part of the broader strategic plan to modernize the ground support of the U.S. nuclear triad. The new missile has improved performance in terms of accuracy, reliability, and the ability to overcome modern missile defense systems.

Replacing the Minuteman III with the LGM-35A Sentinel will strengthen nuclear deterrence and enhance the security of the United States and its allies, providing a modern and reliable component of the nuclear triad.

The UK is negotiating with the United States on the purchase of F-35A fighter jets with the ability to carry tactical nuclear weapons

 F-35A Lightning II

Britain has begun "extremely delicate negotiations" with the United States on the acquisition of F-35A Lightning II fighter jets capable of carrying B61 tactical gravity nuclear bombs. This initiative is supported by Prime Minister Keira Starmer and is aimed at expanding the country's nuclear deterrent in the face of the growing threat from Russia.

According to The Sunday Times, the British government views the F-35A as the second pillar of its nuclear triad, along with the Vanguard-class submarines. These aircraft have a range of about 1,400 km, which exceeds the capabilities of other F-35 modifications, and can be used in scenarios that do not involve a full-scale nuclear war.

The planned purchase will be the most significant expansion of the British nuclear arsenal since the end of the Cold War. In preparation for this step, a strategic review of UK defence is being prepared, which should highlight the need to strengthen defence capabilities and increase transparency in response to the "immediate and urgent" threat posed by Russia.

The F-35A has already been certified to carry the upgraded B61-12 thermonuclear gravity bomb, making them dual—use aircraft capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear weapons. This is the first fifth-generation aircraft with this status, which highlights technological progress and the strategic importance of the platform.

French Rafale fighter jets demonstrate their might at exercises in Sweden

For the first time, French Rafale multirole fighters, including modifications capable of carrying nuclear weapons, are involved in joint military exercises in Sweden. This event was a landmark step in strengthening defense cooperation between the two countries and demonstrating France's military might beyond its borders.

The exercises are aimed at practicing the rapid dispersal of fighters in Sweden, which is a key element of modern tactics to counter potential threats. This strategy minimizes the risks to aviation in the event of an attack on the main air bases and increases the operational flexibility of the armed forces.

Rafale fighters, known for their versatility and high combat performance, play an important role in ensuring NATO's security. They are capable of performing a wide range of tasks, including air support, reconnaissance, air defense, and even nuclear deterrence. The participation of these vehicles in the Swedish exercises underlines France's desire to strengthen its position in Europe and demonstrate its readiness for collective defense.

Sweden, which is actively modernizing its armed forces and seeking closer cooperation with NATO, has provided its territory for the maneuvers. It also demonstrates the country's growing role as an important partner in ensuring the security of the region.

Such exercises have not only military, but also political significance. In the context of growing tensions in Europe, the demonstration of unity between the participating countries is becoming an important signal for potential opponents. In addition, it is an opportunity to share experiences and improve the compatibility of the armed forces of different States.

Working out how to disperse fighters is especially relevant in light of modern threats, such as the use of precision weapons and drones. The rapid transfer of aircraft to alternate airfields makes it possible to increase the survival rate of aircraft and ensure the continuity of combat operations.

Thus, the participation of the French Rafale in the exercises in Sweden symbolizes the deepening of cooperation between the countries and demonstrates their readiness to jointly defend the European continent.

Expansion of Chinese nuclear submarine base on Google Earth

Recently updated satellite images on Google Earth have revealed a key Chinese naval base, revealing the growing scale of the country's nuclear submarine fleet.

Located about 18 kilometers east of Qingdao, on China's east coast along the Yellow Sea, this military installation is now visible through an open surveillance platform.

It illustrates the steady and deliberate expansion of the People's Liberation Army (PLAN) Navy in the underwater field. Far from being a simple maintenance facility, the base plays a central role in the logistical and operational infrastructure of China's naval nuclear deterrent.

China expands nuclear fleet: six Jin-class ballistic missile submarines

The US Strategic Command has officially assessed that the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) operates six Jin-class ballistic missile submarines (Type 094), which constitutes China's first reliable sea-based nuclear deterrent, as each vessel is equipped with up to 12 submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs). This capability provides China with a second-strike capability and is part of a broader expansion of its strategic forces, in line with President Xi Jinping's directive on military readiness for a potential operation against Taiwan by 2027, which has led to investments in land-based missiles, strategic bombers, and naval assets.

Vulnerability of the UK's nuclear deterrent: dependence on the United States poses a security threat

The United States has the right to disable the UK's nuclear submarines, which poses a security threat.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer recently boarded one of Britain's four nuclear submarines for a photo shoot as part of his attempts to showcase Britain's defense capabilities.

However, Starmer is facing a problem. The submarine and the rest of the UK's nuclear fleet are heavily dependent on the United States as an operational partner. And at a time when the United States is becoming an increasingly unreliable partner under a fully transactional president, this is not ideal. The US can, if it wants, effectively disable the UK's nuclear deterrent.

The UK has some autonomy as it is operationally independent and controls the launch decision.

However, it remains dependent on the United States, as the nuclear technologies underlying the Trident system were developed and leased by Lockheed Martin in the United States, and there is no suitable alternative.

British Admiral Perry: Vanguard submarines are capable of "incinerating" 40 Russian cities

nuclear submarine of the Vanguard type

Chris Perry, a retired rear admiral of the British Royal Navy, said that nuclear submarines of the Vanguard type, equipped with Trident ballistic missiles, are capable of destroying dozens of Russian cities in one strike. This statement, voiced in an interview with the British media, caused a wide response against the background of growing geopolitical tensions.

According to Perry, each of the four Vanguard-class submarines carries 16 Trident II D5 missiles, which can be equipped with nuclear warheads. "One such submarine is capable of incinerating 40 Russian cities very quickly. This should make any world leader afraid of Britain," he stressed.

These submarines remain a key element of the United Kingdom's nuclear deterrence. Their main task is covert patrolling in remote areas of the world's oceans, which guarantees a retaliatory strike in case of aggression.

Perry's statement came amid a discussion in NATO about Russia's deterrence strategy. Experts note that such statements may be part of an information campaign aimed at strengthening the UK's position in negotiations with the EU and the United States. However, the Kremlin has not yet commented on the words of the British admiral.
