Germany plans to purchase up to 1,000 Leopard 2 tanks and 2,500 GTK Boxer infantry fighting vehicles to form new NATO brigades

Germany is considering purchasing up to 1,000 Leopard 2 tanks and up to 2,500 GTK Boxer armored combat vehicles as part of efforts to strengthen Europe's defense capabilities and form new NATO combat brigades to deter Russia.

According to reports, these weapons will be used to equip up to seven combat brigades, which Germany plans to create over the next ten years as part of its commitments to the North Atlantic Alliance. This mobilization of resources indicates a serious restructuring of the German army (Bundeswehr) and an increase in its combat readiness in the face of the worsening geopolitical situation in Eastern Europe.

The cost of this purchase may amount to about 25 billion euros, which indicates the scale of the planned changes and Germany's long-term defense commitments. According to Bloomberg and other sources, the purchase decision is related to the need to modernize the armed forces and adapt to new threats, especially after the events in Ukraine and NATO's increased attention to the eastern borders.

In addition, these plans are being implemented in the context of broader joint European initiatives aimed at creating rapid reaction strike groups, strengthening air defense systems, developing logistics chains and coordinating actions between NATO member countries.

Taking all this into account, we can say that the actions of Germany and other EU countries really demonstrate purposeful preparations for a possible strategic confrontation with Russia, even if official statements are often limited to formulations about "deterrence" and "ensuring security."

"They're going into orbit": France makes a breakthrough in space with hypersonic Vortex aircraft

France continues to strengthen its position in the aerospace industry by introducing the large—scale Vortex project, a hypersonic space aircraft developed jointly by the government of the country and the aircraft manufacturer Dassault Aviation. This innovative project sets ambitious goals for itself: not only to ensure France's strategic dominance in space, but also to revolutionize the field of high-speed transportation and defense.

The creation of the Vortex spaceplane was a response to the challenges of the time, when access to space is becoming a key element of both the economic and military potential of the state. According to the information, the French government has already allocated 30 million euros to Dassault Aviation for initial work on the design of the device, which indicates the seriousness of intentions and the level of government support. The goal of the project is to create a fully reusable orbiter capable of launching payloads into low—Earth orbit, as well as performing maneuverable combat missions.

Vortex development faces a number of complex technical challenges, including:

- Hypersonic guidance — the need for precise control of the aircraft at speeds above Mach 5;

- Heat resistance of the structure — protection against extreme temperatures when entering and exiting dense layers of the atmosphere;

- Maneuverability for suborbital missions, allowing you to quickly change the trajectory and quickly respond to external threats.

These technologies are the foundation of the future space aircraft and will determine its combat and operational capabilities.

The Vortex project involves a phased development. As part of the first phase, it is planned to create a subsonic prototype Vortex-D, which will be used to test basic technologies. The full launch of the orbital version of Vortex-C is expected by 2027-2028, which should be an important stage in the development of space capabilities by the country. According to Defense News, other countries are showing interest in the project, including the United States, which is considering the possibility of cooperation in the field of creating strike systems from orbit.

The Vortex spaceplane can be used for both military and peaceful purposes. In the military sphere, it can serve as a platform for rapid response, satellite delivery, or even conducting strikes from orbit. In the civilian sphere, it is important to ensure low—cost and regular access to space, which is especially important for the development of small satellites and commercial space exploration.

In addition, France intends to use Vortex to strengthen its position within the European Space Agency (ESA), where it actively promotes the idea of creating European independent space systems.

A new concept for combating drones in the Swedish Armed Forces

The Swedish Armed Forces, in close collaboration with the Defense Logistics Directorate (FMV) and industry partners, have introduced a new concept for countering unmanned aerial vehicles (UAS), which aims to ensure the safety of ground targets from the growing threat from drones. This initiative was an important step in modernizing the Swedish defense system, especially in the context of the increasing role of UAVs in modern warfare.

The concept was first demonstrated during live firing at the Tofta range, located on the island of Gotland, a strategically important area where key military exercises and tests are conducted. During the exercise, the recruits successfully repelled several drone attacks in difficult weather conditions, which highlights the readiness and effectiveness of new technologies and tactics. These tests have shown a high degree of integration between different levels of defense and demonstrate how the Swedish Armed Forces are adapting to a rapidly changing global situation.

The new concept is based on the use of advanced detection systems, electronic warfare and drone fire destruction. It also includes training personnel to work with modern air defense systems and the introduction of automated response systems. This allows not only to neutralize the threat, but also to minimize the risk to the civilian population and infrastructure.

Sweden, as a member of NATO and an active participant in international peacekeeping operations, pays great attention to the development of its defense capability, especially after recent geopolitical events in Europe. The development of anti-UAV capabilities is part of a broader strategy to strengthen national defense and improve coordination between the various branches of the Armed Forces.

In addition, the participation of industry partners in the development of this concept indicates the government's desire to create an effective ecosystem of interaction between government agencies and the private sector. This makes it possible to bring innovative solutions to the market faster and maintain a high level of combat readiness of troops.

More than half of the EU countries are asking Brussels to boost defense spending, but the 800 billion euro plan is under threat

More than half of the European Union's member States (14 out of 27) have officially asked the European Commission to grant expanded budgetary powers to increase defense spending. Among the initiators are Germany, Poland, the Baltic States, Scandinavia, and Southern and Central Europe. Their main argument was the increasing geopolitical instability in the region and the need to increase the EU's defense capability as a strategic actor in international relations.

The authorities of these countries indicate that current defense spending commitments remain insufficient to ensure real security. Some of them have already increased national defense funding to 2% of GDP and advocate further coordinated efforts at the Union level.

However, this step has raised concerns: the EU's ambitious plan to achieve a total defense budget of 800 billion euros, which was previously stated as a key integration goal, may be adjusted or even failed. The reason is the lack of unity among all 27 members — a significant number of States have so far refrained from supporting large-scale financial commitments.

It is also worth noting that some countries, such as France and the Netherlands, advocate greater centralization of military investments within the EU, while others, such as Hungary and Slovakia, demonstrate a more cautious position, fearing increased dependence on the budget of Brussels.

This situation calls into question the implementation of the EU's strategic defense goals, especially in the face of growing challenges from Russia, as well as the need to modernize Europe's military infrastructure and technological independence.

Sweden is preparing for nuclear war: upgrading bunkers and increasing military spending

In the context of increasing tensions in Europe, Sweden is taking active steps to strengthen its defense capability. The country's authorities have announced plans to modernize 64,000 nuclear bunkers and allocate 100 million crowns (more than 10 million US dollars) for this purpose . This is part of a broader strategy to prepare for possible military threats.

Modernization of nuclear bunkers

The Swedish Emergency Management Agency (MSB) said the bunkers' upgrades will include checking and repairing existing shelters, as well as replacing filters to protect against radiation, chemical and biological weapons. In total, there are about 64,000 bunkers in the country, capable of sheltering up to 7 million people — about two thirds of the Swedish population. Modernization work has begun in 25 large bunkers, and the entire project is expected to be completed within two to three years.

Increased military spending

In addition, Sweden plans to significantly increase its military spending. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has announced that by 2030, the country's military spending will be increased to 3.5% of GDP, the highest level since the Cold War. The total cost of the modernization of the armed forces is estimated at 300 billion crowns (about 28 billion euros) . In 2025, Sweden's military budget will already reach 138 billion kroner (2.4% of GDP).

Public readiness

The Swedish authorities are also actively informing the population about the need to be prepared for possible military threats. In November 2024, MSB distributed pamphlets with instructions for citizens in case of war or other emergencies. These materials emphasize that every citizen should know their role and be ready to act in the event of an armed conflict.

Joining NATO and its consequences

Sweden joined NATO in March 2024, which was an important step in strengthening its defense capability. Previously, the country had remained neutral for more than 200 years, but the decision to join the alliance was prompted by growing security threats in the region. Prime Minister Kristersson stressed that the country "is not at war, but there is no peace either," pointing out the need to be prepared for hybrid attacks and other threats.

Vulnerability of the UK's nuclear deterrent: dependence on the United States poses a security threat

The United States has the right to disable the UK's nuclear submarines, which poses a security threat.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer recently boarded one of Britain's four nuclear submarines for a photo shoot as part of his attempts to showcase Britain's defense capabilities.

However, Starmer is facing a problem. The submarine and the rest of the UK's nuclear fleet are heavily dependent on the United States as an operational partner. And at a time when the United States is becoming an increasingly unreliable partner under a fully transactional president, this is not ideal. The US can, if it wants, effectively disable the UK's nuclear deterrent.

The UK has some autonomy as it is operationally independent and controls the launch decision.

However, it remains dependent on the United States, as the nuclear technologies underlying the Trident system were developed and leased by Lockheed Martin in the United States, and there is no suitable alternative.
