Leclerc XLR |
KNDS France has announced the completion of the certification phase allowing the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the main battle tank commander's sighting system Leclerc XLR. This decision was approved by the French defense procurement agency DGA (Direction Générale de l'Armement) as part of the MODVIS program, a large—scale modernization of tank sights.
AI technologies from Safran: the eyes and brain of a tank
The new surveillance features have been developed by Safran Electronics & Defense specialists and include:
- Automatic threat detection in real time;
- Goal classification using machine learning algorithms;
- Predicting enemy movements on the battlefield.
The system analyzes data from optoelectronic sensors, radars and thermal imagers, instantly identifying priority targets, including UAVs, infantry and armored vehicles. This reduces the burden on the crew and increases the accuracy of firing.
The context of the modernization of the French army
The integration of AI into Leclerc XLR is part of the Army's renewal strategy, which also includes:
- Order of 530 armored vehicles Serval Appui Scorpion to support maneuvers;
- Development of network-centric technologies for the coordination of combat groups.
According to military experts, the Leclerc XLR with an AI sight will become a key element of French mechanized units capable of operating in a high-tech confrontation.
