Denmark invests $1.1 billion in European tanker aircraft to strengthen Air Force

The Airbus A330 multi-purpose transport tanker aircraft refuels the BBC F-16D fighter jet of the Republic of Singapore

Denmark has officially announced its intention to join the multinational program to create a pool of Airbus A330 MRTT refueling aircraft, allocating 7.4 billion Danish crowns (1.1 billion US dollars) until 2033. The plan includes the purchase of two aerial refueling aircraft and participation in the joint operation of equipment with six European countries, which will enhance the combat capabilities of the Danish Air Force and NATO.

The Chief of the General Staff of the Danish Armed Forces, General Michael Hildgaard, suggested first purchasing flight hours for refueling, and then buying out a share in the pool equivalent to two aircraft. This will allow Denmark to flexibly participate in NATO missions without incurring the full cost of maintaining equipment.

The European MRTT pool, which includes the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Belgium and Germany, is designed to reduce dependence on American tankers. For Denmark, which is already participating in the F-35 program, new refueling capabilities are critically important for operations in the Arctic and Baltic States.

The investment in MRTT complements Denmark's plans to strengthen its presence in the Arctic, including the purchase of patrol aircraft and drones, as well as the supply of NSM missiles to Ukraine. This highlights the country's commitment to technological modernization in the face of growing threats.
