As of March 21, 2025, France has almost completed the transfer to Croatia of a batch of Dassault Rafale multirole fighters acquired to modernize the country's air force. The contract for the supply of 12 aircraft was signed in May 2021. The main purpose of the deal was to replace the obsolete Soviet MiG-21s, which had been the backbone of Croatian aviation since the 1990s.
The first batch of six Rafales arrived in Croatia on April 25, 2024, and by November 2024, the country had already received 11 fighters. The last, 12th aircraft, is to replenish the squadron in the near future, which will complete the formation of a new aviation group of the Croatian Air Force.
The deal, worth about 1 billion euros, includes not only equipment, but also pilot training, spare parts supplies and joint exercises. Rafale, known for its versatility, will strengthen Croatia's defense capabilities within the framework of NATO, which the country joined in 2009.
