FA-50 Golden Eagle |
Egypt is close to concluding a contract with South Korea for the supply of 36 FA-50 Golden Eagle light attack and training aircraft, which will be the largest deal in the history of military-technical cooperation between the two countries. Negotiations intensified after the demonstration of the FA-50's capabilities at the August 2022 air show, and in 2024 the parties are already discussing not only the purchase, but also the organization of licensed production of these aircraft in Egypt.
The FA-50 aircraft, developed by KAI Corporation, combine the functions of a training and light combat vehicle capable of carrying air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles. For the Egyptian Air Force, this means ** upgrading the fleet ** due to equipment that is cheaper to operate than heavy fighters, but at the same time provides high maneuverability and accuracy.
The agreement may include the assembly of FA-50s at Egyptian enterprises, which will allow Cairo to reduce its dependence on imports and create jobs. It will also strengthen South Korea's position as a key player in the global arms market, where it already supplies FA-50s to Poland, Bulgaria and Senegal.
Strengthening ties with Seoul is in line with Egypt's strategy to diversify arms supplies, traditionally focusing on the United States and Russia. For South Korea, this is an opportunity to strengthen its influence in the Middle East region, where demand for affordable and technological solutions is growing.
