Chinese Oblique Detonation Engine (ODE) Successfully Tested at Mach 16 Speed

Sonic boom on trials

Having made a big step forward in the field of hypersonic flights, China announced that the engine it developed demonstrated an operational capability of Mach 16 during tests.

The oblique detonation (ODE) engine, powered by conventional aviation kerosene, has demonstrated high performance in a series of tests conducted in the JF-12 impact tube in Beijing.

The JF-12 impact tube can reproduce real hypersonic flight conditions and is one of the largest and most advanced of its kind in the world. It is under the jurisdiction of the Institute of Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
