Underground tunnels have been discovered that groups use to secretly move and evade airstrikes in the eastern province of Deir ez-Zor. These underground passages run through key regions, including Homs, Hama, and the capital Damascus, and allow groups to move safely between Syria and Lebanon. Tunnels are also used to transport weapons and ammunition, expand military operations and increase influence in the region. The tunnels have several entry and exit points, some of which are hidden near construction sites, while others are camouflaged in gardens or warehouses on private property.
The tunnels, dug several meters underground, have simple entrances with earth-filled supported by metal-reinforced roofs. The deeper sections are more developed: the walls are plastered, the rooms are completely tiled, which suggests that they were used as warehouses or shelters, maybe for other purposes. Some rooms are locked with iron doors, which indicates the presence of warehouses or shelters for personnel. The doors could not be opened even with explosive devices. The tunnels are equipped with electrical cables, lighting systems and narrow corridors equipped with iron ladders to facilitate movement. It has not yet been clarified where the electricity comes from in the bunkers.
