According to the US Space Command, Russia's newest low-Earth orbit (LEO) Kosmos satellite is in orbit next to an unnamed US government satellite, further fueling suspicions that the Kosmos satellites are anti-satellite weapons (ASAT) and not just watchbirds, as Moscow claims..
"The US Space Command can confirm that a recent Russian launch put a Russian satellite into orbit near a US government satellite. Russia continues to research, develop, test and deploy a complex of anti-space systems that threaten the security and stability of the domain, therefore, in accordance with all objects in orbit, USSPACECOM will continue to monitor disturbing behavior or activity related to this launch.", — A SPACECOM representative told Breaking Defense today.
Although SPACECOM did not name the American satellite being monitored, the statement was made after reports from independent astronomers that the new Cosmos 2588, launched on May 23, was launched into a coplanar orbit from USA 338. Experts believe that USA 338 is one of the National Research Administration's KH series electro-optical spy satellites known to like the Crystal constellation.
