BAE Systems has announced a new contract with General Dynamics Electric Boat for the production of Virginia Payload Module (VPM) missile barrels for Virginia-class Block VI submarines. The contract amount is 70 million dollars.
The Virginia Payload Module (VPM) is an important element of the modernization of Virginia-class submarines. These missile barrels allow the submarines to carry up to seven Tomahawk cruise missiles or other future types of missiles. This significantly increases the combat power and payload capacity of submarines, which is a key factor in ensuring the national security of the United States.
VPM missile barrels will be manufactured at BAE Systems in Louisville, Kentucky. This company already has experience in manufacturing missile barrels for previous versions of Virginia-class submarines, as well as other components such as propulsors for Columbia-class submarines.
The VPM production contract is part of a broader program to modernize and expand the Virginia-class submarine fleet. General Dynamics Electric Boat is currently the main contractor for the construction of these submarines, working in partnership with Huntington Ingalls Industries.
