Israel has created an AI flying center: how the Oron plane is changing the future of intelligence

Oron reconnaissance aircraft in the sky

Oron — The evolution of Israeli aerial reconnaissance

Israel has unveiled the Oron, not just a new aircraft, but a breakthrough aerial reconnaissance and control concept. Created in the face of military pressure and technological race, this multi-purpose aircraft combines advanced technology, modular architecture and artificial intelligence, forming a new standard for future intelligence platforms.

Oron is the result of decades of development, starting with legendary systems such as Shavit and Eytam.

From "Shavit" and "Eytama" to a single multifunctional platform

Previously, Israeli intelligence relied on specialized platforms: Shavit provided strategic interception of signals, and Eitam acted as a "flying command center" linking military units. However, these functions were performed separately, which slowed down the processing of information.

Oron is changing the paradigm: it combines electronic intelligence (RER), visual surveillance, analysis and control into a single system. Now a single platform can do everything from data collection to strike coordination.

Situational Fabric: How Oron turns Data into a Strategy

The key feature of Oron is the formation of the so—called "situational fabric". There are several teams of analysts working on board: some are engaged in signal interception, others in image processing, and others in radar and electronic mapping. All data is integrated into a single network and processed in real time.

Artificial intelligence systems automatically detect anomalies, identify sources of threats, and make predictions. For example, algorithms can detect signs of preparation for the deployment of troops or the launch of drones long before it becomes obvious to traditional intelligence.

Gulfstream 550 as a base: stealth, range, economy

The Gulfstream 550 business jet became the technical base of Oron. Its choice is due to a number of advantages: high flight range (up to 12,000 km), the ability to use short runways, low radar visibility and lower operating costs compared to heavy military aircraft.

This allows Oron to control vast territories — from the Middle East to North Africa, the Caucasus and parts of the Indian Ocean. The civilian platform also simplifies modernization: the modular electronic architecture allows for the rapid adoption of new technologies.

Role in combat and political operations

From a military point of view, Oron transforms the Israeli Air Force into a more "connected" and reactive force. The aircraft can coordinate the actions of fighters, air defense systems, and ground units, providing them with up-to-date intelligence that instantly transforms into combat instructions.

Politically, Oron strengthens Israel's position as a key partner of the United States and NATO. Its technological model — compact, efficient and scalable — can become a model for other countries. In addition, the possession of such a platform increases the value of Israel in intelligence alliances, especially in the context of confrontation with Iran and its proxies.

Elbit Systems is developing an aviation version of the Iron Beam laser system for Israeli fighter jets

The Iron Beam laser system in action

Israel launches laser weapons into the air: Elbit is working on an aerial version of Iron Beam

The Israeli defense concern Elbit Systems has begun developing an aviation modification of the Iron Beam laser missile defense system. While the ground-based version of the system is already being tested as part of the Iron Dome ecosystem, its technology is now being adapted for installation on board Israeli Air Force combat aircraft.

This step marks the transition from ground-based laser systems to aerial platforms capable of protecting not only stationary objects, but also aircraft themselves from drones, missiles and other small-scale threats.

How does the Iron Beam work and why is it important to get it into the air

Iron Beam is a directed energy system that uses a high—power laser to destroy targets at short ranges. It is effective against:

Tactical Drones (UAV)

Rockets (like Qassam)

of Small cruise missiles

On the ground, the system complements Iron Dome radars and missiles, reducing the cost of interception. In the air, its task is to defend the fighter and protect a group of aircraft from drone attacks, especially in conditions of intense electronic warfare, where traditional means can be suppressed.

Possible platforms: F-16, F-15 and F-Although Elbit Systems does not officially disclose which aircraft will be equipped with the aerial Iron Beam, analysts suggest that potential carriers may be:

The F-16 Barak is the backbone of the Air Force fleet and is being actively upgraded

The F-15 Baz is a heavy fighter aircraft with high energy output

The F-35 Adir is a fifth—generation stealth fighter where compactness and stealth are critical.

For the F-35, laser integration is particularly relevant: it will allow maintaining low radar visibility without using external suspensions, and at the same time increase survivability in the face of growing threats from drones.

Technical challenges and prospects

Transferring a laser system to an aircraft is a difficult engineering task. She demands:

A compact but powerful laser module

Efficient cooling system

Reliable energy source

High-precision vibration and speed guidance system

However, advances in laser miniaturization and the development of solid-state systems make the project realistic. According to experts, the first tests on the pilot platform may begin as early as 2026-2027.

Israel has purchased two new KC-46 tanker aircraft from Boeing for $500 million

Refueling an F-35 fighter jet with a KC-46

Israel-Boeing deal: What the contract includes

The Ministry of Defense and the Israeli Air Force have signed a contract with the American company Boeing for the purchase of two additional KC-46 Pegasus tanker aircraft. The value of the transaction is 500 million dollars. This step is part of a long-term program to modernize the fleet and strengthen the strategic mobility of the country's Air Force.

Earlier, Israel had already received the first KC-46, becoming the first foreign country to operate this model. The new vehicles will be used to refuel fighter jets, transport and reconnaissance aircraft in the air, which significantly expands their range of action.

The role of the KC-46 in the Israeli Air Force

The KC-46 tanker aircraft, based on the Boeing 767 civilian airliner, is equipped with modern refueling systems using both the hose and fork method, which allows it to serve a wide range of military aircraft, including F-15, F-16 and F-35 fighters.

For Israel, whose military operations are often conducted over long distances — including regions outside the Middle East — having reliable tankers is critical. The KC-46 provides the ability to perform long-term missions without the need to base in third countries, which increases operational autonomy.

The strategic importance of replenishing the fleet

The acquisition of two additional KC-46s enhances the Israeli Air Force's ability to strategically deploy and support long-range operations. This is especially important in the context of threats from Iran and its allies, where actions over long distances are possible.

In addition to refueling, the KC-46 can be used as a transport aircraft for transporting cargo and personnel, as well as as a medical evacuation platform. Its versatility makes it a valuable asset in a limited strategic aviation fleet.

Integration of the KC-46 into the existing aviation infrastructure

The new KC-46s will be based at Tel Nof Airbase, where the first machines of this type are already in operation. Israel has adapted ground infrastructure and maintenance to Boeing's requirements, including specialized software and crew training.

The integration takes place under the supervision of the Defense Procurement Department of the Israeli Ministry of Defense and with the support of Boeing specialists. Both aircraft are expected to be delivered within the next 18-24 months.

The Israeli Air Force will receive an "air PBX" — new KC-46A tankers are on the way

Next year will be a turning point for Israeli aviation: The Israeli Air Force will finally receive its first KC-46A Pegasus tanker aircraft, which will dramatically expand its long-range flight capabilities. It's like putting a "gas station" on the wings — now Israeli fighter jets and reconnaissance aircraft will be able to fly further, longer and not depend on the nearest airfields.

The KC-46A is not just a large fuel tank. This is a high-tech machine from Boeing, capable of flying 11,830 kilometers without refueling and transferring up to 207,000 pounds of fuel (that's almost 94 tons!) to other aircraft. At the same time, it is compatible with more than 64 types of aircraft, including F-35, F-15, F-16 fighter jets and even refueling helicopters.

Why is this so important? Israel is a small country, but its military operations often extend far beyond the region. To fly, for example, to Iran or other remote targets, fighter jets critically need aerial refueling. Previously, this role was performed by outdated Re'em Israeli modifications of the Boeing 707, many of which are already over 60 years old. It's like trying to drive a dilapidated truck in a modern race.

The new KC-46A is a breakthrough. It is equipped with state—of-the-art systems, including television cameras for precise docking, anti-interference protection, and the ability to refuel multiple aircraft simultaneously, both with a rod hose and a drip hose.

The entire deal concluded with the US government is estimated at $ 930 million and provides for the supply of up to eight such aircraft. The first machines are already in production, and their appearance will dramatically enhance the strategic mobility of the Israeli Air Force.

Now Israeli pilots will not only be able to "make it out", but they will be able to act confidently and at a great distance. The KC-46A is not just a tanker. It's a combat power booster.

Israel is modernizing the Air Force: 75 F-35I "Adir" are expected by 2030

 F-35I "Adir"

Israel continues to build up its air force and relies on the F-35I "Adir", its unique version of the American fifth—generation fighter F-35A. According to an agreement with Lockheed Martin and the US government, Israel plans to receive 75 such aircraft by 2030.

The first two F-35is were delivered back in 2016, and since then deliveries have been coming in batches. All this time, the aircraft have been building up their combat potential at the Nevatim Airbase, where several squadrons based on them have already been created.

This is not just a copy of the American F-35 — it is a full-fledged joint project in which Israeli specialists have implemented their technologies. For example, the electronic warfare complex from Elbit Systems, its own communication and control systems, enlarged fuel tanks, and even weapons developed in Israel.

Thanks to these improvements, the Adir is considered one of the most advanced F-35s in the world, capable of operating effectively in a complex electronic environment and delivering precision strikes at long distances.

By 2025, the Israeli Air Force already has about 46 F-35I fighters distributed in three squadrons. Deliveries are continuing, and the fleet is expected to reach 75 aircraft by 2030, which will be a major boost for Israeli aviation.

The F-35I Adir program is a key element of the modernization of the Israeli Air Force and an important part of its strategic superiority in the region. These fighters provide not only a qualitative leap in combat capabilities, but also emphasize the close military-technical cooperation between Israel and the United States.

Israel and the United States modified the F-35 to increase the range of strikes against Iran without loss of stealth

F-35I Adir

Israel, together with the United States, modified the fifth-generation F-35 fighter, adapted for the Israeli Air Force under the designation F-35I Adir. The main feature of the upgrade was an increase in fuel reserves, which allows the aircraft to carry additional fuel for long—range strikes against targets in Iran, while maintaining the key advantage of stealth.

The F-35I Adir is a unique version of the F-35A, equipped with Israeli electronic warfare systems, avionics and integrated weapons of its own production. Modification of the fuel system made it possible to increase the flight range and time spent in the combat zone without the need for external suspensions, which usually worsen the stealth characteristics of the aircraft.

The Israeli Air Force actively uses the F-35I Adir in operations requiring high precision and stealth. The aircraft is capable of striking air, land and sea targets, combining the capabilities of a fighter and a front-line bomber. Thanks to the additional fuel, the F-35I can perform missions over significantly longer distances, which is especially important for operations against Iran.

The F-35I supply program for Israel began in 2016, and by now the country has received about 40 such aircraft. Further expansion of the fighter fleet is planned in the coming years, taking into account constant software updates and the integration of new weapons systems.

Thus, the modification of the F-35I Adir strengthens Israel's strategic capabilities, allowing effective operations in the region while maintaining the advantages of stealth technology.

Greece and Israel have been actively cooperating in the military sphere since 2017, when the Air Forces of both countries participated for the first time in Iniohos together with Arab states, including the UAE. In 2025, Qatar's participation and the strengthening of the role of the Persian Gulf countries signal the expansion of the Middle East military bloc. In addition, for the first time, KC-390 tankers from Brazil are involved in the exercises, which increases the realism of the scenarios.

Experts attribute the scale of Iniohos 2025 to rising tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. The participation of Qatar and the UAE indicates the desire of these countries to strengthen ties with NATO through cooperation with Greece and Israel. At the same time, the exercises demonstrate unity in countering threats such as Iran and extremist groups.
