The Turkish military-industrial complex has taken a serious step forward by developing a new thermobaric aerial bomb Mk 84 Gazap. This bomb, which weighs about 970 kg, is based on the American Mk 84 aerial bomb, but at the same time has a much greater destructive power due to the thermobaric effect and a unique body solution.
Gazap is not just a high temperature and shock wave, which traditionally affect manpower and light equipment. The inner body of the bomb is crushed into about 10 thousand metal fragments, which are capable of scattering far from the epicenter of the explosion — up to 800-1000 meters. This gives a much wider range of damage compared to the classic high-explosive bombs Mk 84 or the Russian FAB-1000.
When detonated, the bomb creates a huge cloud of fire, smoke and dust with a diameter of about 160 meters, and the temperature in the explosion zone can reach 3,000 ° C. All this makes the Mk 84 Gazap extremely dangerous for open targets and unprotected vehicles.
The bomb is compatible with the main Turkish tactical aircraft — the F-4 and F-16, as well as, probably, with those that the Air Force plans to adopt in the future. It can be used both in a free-falling version and with potentially possible control if it is equipped with appropriate kits.
The development of the Mk 84 Gazap is a significant achievement for the Turkish defense industry and the arms industry. The new munition will expand the arsenal of the Turkish Air Force, adding a powerful weapon for destroying manpower, equipment and buildings, especially in open space.
Although the thermobaric effect limits the use of the bomb against armored vehicles, a large number of fragments and high temperature significantly increase its effectiveness. It is also expected that the Turkish munition will be able to compete in the international market due to the Mk 84 caliber, compatibility with widespread aircraft, and impressive performance.
