American troops have left two key bases in the Syrian province of Deir ez-Zor — the Al-Omar oil field and the Conoco gas plant. These facilities were transferred to the control of the Kurdish "Syrian Democratic Forces" (SDF) amid increased militant attacks and increasing instability in the region.
As part of the drawdown, the United States has withdrawn about 500 troops and closed several military bases in northeastern Syria. According to the Pentagon, after these actions, the number of American forces in the country will decrease to less than 1,000 people. Military personnel and equipment were transferred to Iraqi Kurdistan, where other US bases are located.
The transfer of the bases to the Kurdish forces raises concerns about security gaps and the possible resurgence of the Islamic State (ISIL) terrorist group in the region. The Kurds are taking responsibility for protecting these strategically important sites, but there remains a risk of new attacks and destabilization.
