The US Air Force has confirmed flight tests of the YFQ-42A unmanned fighter prototype

YFQ-42A prototype on the runway

YFQ-42A in the Sky: California Test launch

The US Air Force has officially confirmed that the prototype of the YFQ-42A unmanned combat aircraft has begun a flight test program. The tests are being conducted at a secret test site in California, where flight characteristics, autonomous systems and interaction with manned platforms are being tested. This stage was an important milestone in the implementation of the ambitious Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program.

General Atomics and the US Air Force: joint development

The YFQ-42A was developed by General Atomics, a leading American manufacturer of unmanned systems, known for projects such as the MQ-9 Reaper. The aircraft was created according to the requirements of the US Air Force as part of a strategy to create "friendly drones" (loyal wingmen) capable of escorting and supporting manned fighters in combat.

This is one of two competitive prototypes under CCA — the second, the YQ-44A Fury, was developed by Anduril Industries.

Key data for the CCA program

According to the Air Force, the YFQ-42A has already provided valuable data on:

  • The airworthiness of the platform
  • The level of management autonomy
  • The possibilities of integration with command systems and weapons

These tests allow us to assess how much the drone will be able to act as an "extension" of the pilot, performing reconnaissance, electronic warfare and even strikes without risking the crew.

The future lies in satellite drones and autonomy

The goal of the CCA program is to create a large number of modular, relatively inexpensive unmanned aircraft capable of operating in tandem with fifth-generation fighters (F-35, F-22) and future sixth-generation platforms (NGAD). Such drones will increase the combat zone, reduce the burden on the pilot and increase the survival rate of the group.

It is expected that the final decision on the choice of the platform and the transition to mass production will be made in fiscal year 2026.

American unmanned fighter satellites: launch of flight tests of the CCA program

CCA unmanned drone concept accompanied by F-35

The YQ-44A and YFQ-42A prototypes are ready for their first flights

According to Pentagon sources, the launch of flight tests under the Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program is just around the corner. It is expected that at least one, and possibly both, prototypes will take to the air in the coming days — the YQ-44A Fury from Anduril Industries and the YFQ-42A from General Atomics. This will be the official start of the flight test and evaluation phase, which will lay the foundation for future mass production contracts.

A representative of the US Department of Defense said that both vehicles are in the "practical launch readiness" stage, which means the completion of ground checks, system tests and preparations for the first flights. Successful tests will allow the USAF to identify the most promising platform for further development.

The essence of the Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program

The CCA program aims to create so-called "unmanned fighter satellites" — drones capable of escorting fifth-generation manned fighters such as the F-35 and F-22, and in the future, the sixth generation (NGAD). These unmanned platforms will perform a wide range of tasks, from reconnaissance and electronic warfare to strikes against ground and air targets.

The key feature of CCA is the use of artificial intelligence for autonomous maneuvering and decision—making in combat, while control remains with the pilot operator in the lead aircraft. This makes it possible to significantly expand the combat zone, reduce risks for the crew and increase the overall efficiency of the aviation group.

From testing to mass production

The flight test phase will last for several years and will include testing for endurance, maneuverability, compatibility with manned platforms and resistance to interference. The final decision on the selection of the winner and the conclusion of contracts for mass production is planned to be made in fiscal year 2026.

The first serial production of the CCA is expected to enter service with the US Air Force in the late 2020s and early 2030s. This will be an important stage in the transformation of aviation from a predominantly manned to a hybrid system where man and machine work in close cooperation.

The role of artificial intelligence and the future of manned aviation

The CCA program marks the transition to a new paradigm of aerial combat. Artificial intelligence allows drones to operate in difficult conditions where human reaction may not be fast enough. At the same time, the pilot retains strategic control, delegating tactical tasks to his "unmanned partners."

This approach not only enhances combat capabilities, but also makes aviation more resilient to losses. CCA drones can be used as expendable platforms, allowing you to save valuable manned aircraft and crews.

The US Army has allocated $25 million to integrate the Blackbeard GL hypersonic missile into the HIMARS system

In the U.S. fiscal year 2026 budget, the army allocated $25 million to support the development and integration of the Blackbeard Ground Launch (GL) hypersonic missile into the HIMARS highly mobile artillery missile system. This initiative is part of the HX3 project and marks the transition of the system into the engineering and production development phase.

The Blackbeard GL is designed to enhance HIMARS' ability to deliver medium-range precision strikes against mobile, fortified, and temporarily accessible targets. The missile provides about 80% of the capabilities of the advanced Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) Increment 4 at a significantly lower cost.

The system uses terminal guidance with an active search head unit, which makes it possible to effectively hit moving and hidden targets even in difficult conditions. The integration of the rocket into the modified launch containers of the Multiple Launch Rocket System Family of Munitions (MFOM) will ensure compatibility with the HIMARS and M270 platforms, expanding operational capabilities without significant changes in technology.

It is planned to complete software validation, conduct flight tests and prepare production samples by 2027, after which the delivery of systems to the troops will begin. The Blackbeard GL will be an important addition to the U.S. Army's arsenal, increasing the mobility and effectiveness of strike capabilities in the face of growing threats from Russian and Chinese hypersonic weapons.

Hermeus Corp. conducted the first flight of the experimental Quarterhorse Mk 1 UAV

Quarterhorse Mk 1 UAV

The American company Hermeus Corp. He is going to create a hypersonic unmanned aerial vehicle. In order to find and develop the necessary solutions, she is developing experimental UAVs of the Quarterhorse series. Recently, one of the prototypes of this family made its first flight. Now he will have to demonstrate a number of technologies and solutions that can be used in the design of hypersonic UAVs in the future.

On May 27, 2025, Hermeus announced the launch of flight tests of the experimental Quarterhorse Mk 1 UAV. The first flight took place at Edwards Air Force Base. A strip laid on the bottom of a dried-up lake was used for take-off and landing. Under the control of the operator, the drone performed a takeoff and takeoff, after which it flew over the base and landed. During the first flight, the operation of all major systems was checked, from the control devices to the propulsion system. The development company reports that all the UAV systems have done their job and confirmed the design characteristics. The device completed the flight mission without significant comments. Following the results of the flight, Hermeus Corp. I published an official press release and attached a short demo video to it. It was hit by the takeoff, a few seconds of flight, and the landing of the drone. Unfortunately, the video does not allow us to draw all the necessary conclusions.

Testing of the Quarterhorse Mk 1 product will continue in the near future. The development company plans to establish all the exact characteristics of the UAV, test some solutions, etc. Then the test experience will be used in the development and improvement of new UAV series. Hermeus notes the great importance of the first flight and flight tests in general. These events should pave the way for the further development of the Quarterhorse project and help achieve its ultimate goal. The result of the work will be the appearance of a full-size hypersonic UAV.

Hermeus Corp. She started her business from Atlanta (Georgia) in 2018. Its founders were former employees of a number of aircraft manufacturing organizations. Their goal was to create unmanned aerial platforms with super- and hypersonic flight speeds. In the late 1980s, the company began developing two ambitious projects. The first involved the creation of a series of experimental UAVs, including hypersonic ones. He received the name Quarterhorse (a horse participating in a quarter-mile race). At the same time, they began to develop the Chimera engine for such UAVs. Until the early twenties, Hermeus was engaged only in theoretical research and preliminary study of future technology. In addition, the first tests were conducted. For example, at the end of 2021, a prototype UAV was built to test the engine. Externally and in design, it differed from other prototypes, but it coped with its tasks. At the turn of the decade, the company began developing a prototype Quarterhorse Mk 0 product. In fact, it was a UAV with a number of necessary systems, but without a wing and other components. It was intended for ground testing, including taxiing and high-speed runway runs. In January 2024, the "zero version" UAV was delivered to one of the airfields of the US Air Force for testing. The device showed the necessary characteristics on the ground. He could perform a run-up, maintained stability and showed the necessary controllability. The tests of the Mk 0 product were considered successful.            During this period, a full-fledged Quarterhorse Mk 1 flight UAV was being developed. Unlike its predecessor, it had to get all the necessary planes, controls, etc. The assembly of such a drone was completed in early spring 2024. Over the next few months, it was planned to conduct training and begin ground tests. In addition, the first flight was expected before the end of the year. For unknown reasons, work on the Mk 1 Quarterhorse UAV was delayed for several months. The first flight was carried out only now, in May 2025. Nevertheless, such deadlines are considered a reason for pride. The development and preparation for the tests took minimal time.

The current Mk 1 prototype is capable of flying, but has limited performance. To simplify the design, reduce the cost of production and reduce technical risks, it was made subsonic. However, even in this configuration, an experienced UAV should show the operation of all systems and confirm the correctness of the chosen solutions. According to known information, Hermeus Corp. It is already developing a new experimental UAV, which has received the Quarterhorse Mk 2 index. It will be similar to the existing flight prototype, but will be able to show a higher flight speed. The Mk 2 will have to overcome the sound barrier and accelerate to 3M.

Earlier it was reported that the construction of the supersonic Quarterhorse could be completed by the end of 2025 at the turn of 2025-26. he will make his first flight. At the same time, the timing of the supersonic launch or demonstration of maximum speed has not yet been announced. They will probably depend on the success of the flight tests. Finally, following the results of the Mk 1 and Mk 2 projects, the Quarterhorse Mk 3 UAV will be created. It will be a hypersonic aircraft, and, as promised, "the fastest in the world." The development company cannot even give an approximate date for the appearance of such a product yet. Perhaps its tests will begin only at the end of the decade, and then the drone will be able to claim speed records.

Hermeus Corp. I have long revealed the appearance of the first prototypes, including equipment for flight tests. The general ideas of the following Quarterhorse series projects have also been published. All this information allows us to imagine what experimental UAVs look like, how they are arranged and how they will develop. The Quarterhorse Mk 0 product had only a fuselage with part of the main units and landing gear. Then, a full-fledged airframe was formed in the Mk 1 project. It is built according to the normal scheme and has a spindle-shaped fuselage with an air intake under the nose. A triangular wing of medium elongation and a swept tail of a normal layout are used. The size and weight of the UAV have not yet been reported.

Two experimental vehicles are equipped with General Electric J85 turbojet engines. With the help of such a product, the Quarterhorse Mk 0 can run along the runway, and the Mk 1 is capable of performing subsonic flight. At this stage, we decided to do without a fundamentally new engine. The Quarterhorse Mk 1 uses a remote control system that provides full control over flight and operation of the units. It includes video cameras, various sensors and actuators.

Hermeus Corp. She has already shown the design appearance of the future Mk 2 type UAV. It will be significantly different from the first devices. It will be made larger and built according to the "tailless" scheme with a triangular wing. The air intake will be moved from under the fuselage to the nose and equipped with a conical central body. This appearance will allow the drone to develop high supersonic speeds.

Thus, the company Hermeus Corp. She has set big and bold goals for herself and is now confidently moving towards them. Projects of new aircraft equipment and components for it are being consistently developed, prototypes are being built and the necessary tests are being carried out. A few days ago, the Quarterhorse project was successfully brought to flight tests of the first prototype. New flight prototypes are expected to appear over the next few years. Recent successes give the company reason for optimism. How justified it is will become clear in a few years.

Egypt strengthens aviation fleet: flight tests of new Rafale DM18 and DM19 fighter jets

The French aircraft manufacturer Dassault Aviation is actively conducting flight tests of two new Rafale multirole fighters, designated as DM18 and DM19. These aircraft are intended to be transferred to the Egyptian Air Force as part of a large-scale contract for the purchase of Rafale fighters. The delivery of the new aircraft will be an important milestone in the development of the Egyptian Air Force and the strengthening of cooperation between Cairo and Paris.

Egypt began acquiring Rafale fighter jets back in 2015, becoming the first international buyer of these machines. Since then, the country has consistently expanded its Rafale fleet, making it the second largest operator of this type of fighter after France. The two new aircraft, the DM18 and DM19, are part of the second contract signed in 2021, which provides for the supply of additional fighters to enhance the combat capability of the Egyptian Air Force.

The Rafale fighters developed by Dassault Aviation are considered to be one of the most technologically advanced multirole combat vehicles in the world. They are equipped with modern control systems, high—precision weapons and the ability to perform a wide range of tasks - from air combat to strikes against ground targets. The flight tests of the DM18 and DM19 are aimed at verifying their systems and operational readiness in real-world operations.

The acquisition of new Rafales significantly strengthens Egypt's position in the region. Fighters of this type can effectively counter modern threats and support the modernization strategy of the Egyptian army. In addition, cooperation with France demonstrates Cairo's desire to strengthen defense ties with key world powers.

The success of the Rafale program not only contributes to strengthening Egypt's defense capability, but also opens up new opportunities for further cooperation with France. This applies to both technological aspects and joint training programs for personnel and maintenance of aviation equipment.

Dassault Aviation continues to play a key role in ensuring global security through the supply of its fighter jets. For Egypt, this partnership was an important step towards building one of the most modern air forces in the Middle East region.

Chinese Rainbow-9 drone: a revolution in drone warfare

Rainbow-9 drone

The autonomy and endurance of the Chinese Rainbow-9 drone are expected to transform drone warfare.

State media reported that a ground crew of five people is required to control the drone, which will oversee the flight and manage the payload systems.

Artificial intelligence enhancements have shortened the response time of the latest drone strike China's ability to complete tasks and allow him to work smoothly with stealth fighters.

This assessment was given by former PLA instructor Song Zhongping after, Earlier this month, state broadcaster CCTV showed footage of the Caihong-9 (Rainbow-9), China's newest medium—altitude drone with a long flight duration, during public flight tests at an airfield in northern Shaanxi Province.
