Sweden launches large drone project for the sea: Saab builds underwater drone of the future

LUUV underwater is not just a drone, but an autonomous scout

60 million crowns for an underwater swarm

Sweden is taking a serious step towards an autonomous fleet. Saab has signed a contract with the country's Military Materials Administration (FMV) in the amount of 60 million Swedish kronor — almost 5 million euros — for the development and construction of a large uninhabited underwater vehicle known as LUUV (Large Unmanned Underwater Vehicle). This is not just another drone, but part of a strategy to create a networked underwater exploration of the future.

The goal is not to replace submarines, but to expand their capabilities. The LUUV should become an "extended arm" for the fleet, capable of working underwater for hours or even days without a crew.

LUUV: not just a drone, but an autonomous scout

The LUUV is a large vehicle designed for long—term missions. He will be able to perform reconnaissance, track underwater targets, check sea borders and even set traps for enemy submarines. The main thing is to do it autonomously, without constant control from the shore or from the ship.

Its heart is the Saab Autonomous Ocean Core system. This platform is already used in surface and underwater systems and provides a high level of independence: the drone itself plots a route, avoids obstacles, adapts to currents and can even make decisions based on sensor data.

Saab and FMV: how the Swedish underwater future is being built

Saab is the general contractor of the project. She is responsible for everything from design to testing. The work is carried out in close conjunction with the FMV, which defines the requirements and monitors the progress of development.

This is not Sweden's first experience in the field of unmanned underwater systems. Since the 2010s, the country has been actively developing this niche, and now it is one of the leaders in Europe. LUUV is a logical continuation: from small drones to large, multifunctional platforms.

What will the device do in 2026

The first LUUV sea trials are scheduled for the summer of 2026. At this stage, they will check how the device behaves in real conditions.: how it dives, maneuvers, holds course, and processes data. If everything goes according to plan, mass production and integration into the fleet could begin as early as the end of the 2020s.

For Sweden, a country with a long coastline and a complex maritime geography, such drones are an ideal tool: cheap, stealthy and effective. They will allow you to monitor the Baltic Sea without risking people.

Czech Republic to strengthen air defense: buys 24 MARS combat vehicles with RBS 70 NG missiles

MARS

The Czech Republic is taking a serious step towards strengthening its air defense — the country has ordered 24 MARS (Mobile Artillery Rocket System) combat vehicles equipped with modern RBS 70 NG anti-aircraft missiles. This is not just a replacement of old equipment, but a real modernization aimed at combating the threats of modern times — drones, helicopters and low-flying targets.

The MARS system, developed by the Swedish company Saab, is a mobile complex on a wheeled chassis that quickly turns around, shoots and leaves the position. Instead of artillery, there are launchers for RBS 70 NG, light but very accurate laser—guided missiles. They are ideal for short and medium range damage.

The RBS 70 NG is no longer just an old anti—aircraft gun. It is a digital, interference-proof system capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 9 km. And the main thing is to react quickly to sudden threats, for example, when a drone appears from behind a hill and flies directly to the base.

For the Czech Republic, which is actively modernizing its army and strengthening its defense in the face of an unstable situation in Europe, such an order is a logical and timely move. Now the Czech troops will have a modern, mobile and effective shield against air attacks — and all this on wheels, without being tied to stationary objects.

The French Navy has begun testing the CB 90HSM, Sweden's most modern amphibious assault boat

In the early summer of 2025, the French Navy began testing the advanced high-speed landing craft CB 90HSM, which is the most modern version of the CB 90 series in service with the Royal Swedish Navy. Some French officers and sailors received preliminary training on this vessel under the guidance of their Swedish colleagues, which was an important step in preparing for testing.

These tests cover the so-called "extended period", during which experts will evaluate the combat, transport and tactical capabilities of the boat in various conditions. The main goal is to determine to what extent the CB 90HSM meets the requirements of the French Marine Corps units — Fusiliers marins, which are responsible for protecting both naval bases and ships in open water.

The CB 90HSM is an upgraded version of the original **CB 90**, which has received improved ballistic protection, the ability to install remotely controlled combat modules, and more advanced navigation and communication systems. It is equipped with two Scania DI16 V8 diesel engines, which allows it to reach speeds of over 40 knots, as well as carry up to 21 passengers with full ammunition.

The tests conducted by the French navy may be the first step towards the possible acquisition of this type of boat for the needs of the fleet, especially given the increasing interest of NATO countries in rapid amphibious operations and counteraction in coastal areas. Given the successful operation of the CB 90HSM in Sweden and its high mobility, it is expected that it may be useful for other countries seeking to modernize their coastal and amphibious forces.

Sweden strengthens amphibious forces: Saab will supply an additional 22 CB 90 amphibious assault boats

The Swedish Defense Materials Administration (Försvarets materielverk, FMV) has signed a new contract with Saab for the supply of additional high-speed amphibious assault boats Combat Boat 90 (CB 90) for the amphibious battalion of the Royal Swedish Navy (Royal Swedish Navy, RSwN) . The total value of the contract is about 900 million Swedish kronor, which underlines the country's desire to modernize and strengthen its naval strike capabilities.

CB 90 boats have long been in service with the Swedish Navy and have proven themselves to be highly maneuverable, reliable and multifunctional vessels. They are used for infantry landings, rapid raid operations, evacuation of personnel and other tasks in the coastal zone. Their key advantages include high speed (up to 40 knots), the ability to transport up to 21 military personnel, and modular combat modules, including machine guns, grenade launchers, and anti—tank missiles.

This order is part of a broader modernization program for the Swedish armed forces, which includes the development of amphibious and coastal forces, especially in the face of the escalating geopolitical situation in the Baltic Sea and the increased activity of NATO and Russia in the region. Given the geographical features of Sweden, with its many islands and fjords cutting deep into the land, an effective amphibious group is of strategic importance for coastal defense and rapid response.

The new boats will be placed at the disposal of the amphibious battalion Amfibieregementet, which is based in Karlskrona and is responsible for carrying out a wide range of operations, including special naval operations and the protection of territorial waters. The delivery of 22 new CB 90 units will significantly enhance the unit's mobility and firepower.

It is also important to note that Saab continues to improve the CB 90 platform, adapting it to modern requirements, including the integration of next-generation communication systems, navigation equipment, and remote fire control capabilities. This makes the boat an important solution not only for Sweden, but also for a number of other countries that already operate this type of vessel.

Taurus KEPD 350: An advanced cruise missile that defines the face of modern warfare

Taurus KEPD 350

Modern military technologies require high accuracy, stealth, and the ability to hit well-protected targets at long distances. One of the most striking examples of such weapons is the Taurus KEPD 350 cruise missile, developed by the German company Taurus Systems GmbH with the participation of the Swedish Saab Bofors Dynamics. These weapons have become an important element of the air forces of several countries, including Germany, South Korea and Sweden.

Technical Specifications

The Taurus KEPD 350 is a long—range guided air-to-surface missile with a range of over 500 kilometers. Weighing about 1,400 kg (3,100 lb) and measuring between 5 and 5.1 meters (16-16.7 ft) long, with a wingspan of about 2.1 meters (6.7 ft), it combines compactness with high combat effectiveness. The flight speed ranges from Mach 0.6 to 0.95, which allows it to remain at a low level using terrain-following navigation technology** to reduce the likelihood of enemy radar detection.

One of the key features of the KEPD 350 is its dual warhead, consisting of a penetrating charge and a subsequent powerful explosive mechanism. This design makes it possible to successfully hit both concrete shelters and deeply fortified underground facilities. The weight of the warhead is about 481 kg, which makes it one of the most powerful ammunition in its class.

Guidance system and accuracy

The missile is equipped with a modern combined guidance system that includes GPS, inertial navigation and optical homing in the final phase of the attack. Due to this, the Taurus KEPD 350 demonstrates high accuracy of hitting — up to several meters, which makes it an ideal tool for destroying strategically important targets such as command posts, radar stations, fortified areas and military-industrial facilities.

The rocket also has a "zero-launch capability" function, meaning it can be launched from various types of aircraft, including fourth- and fifth-generation fighters such as the Eurofighter Typhoon or the F/A-18 Hornet. This flexibility significantly increases its value within aviation groups.

Strategic importance

Germany recently signed an agreement to modernize its Taurus KEPD 350 missiles to extend their service life and enhance their combat capabilities. In addition, Sweden is also actively working on the integration of this system into its Gripen E fighter jets, which demonstrates its importance in the international arena.

Due to its stealth, power, and range, the Taurus KEPD 350 plays a key role in strategic defense and air defense suppression operations. It allows strikes to be carried out without risk to pilots, being outside the range of modern air defense systems.

Saab Gripen tests Centaur artificial intelligence in long-range aerial combat

 Gripen E

Saab, together with the German startup Helsing, successfully conducted a series of test flights of the Gripen E fighter aircraft controlled by artificial intelligence (AI) called Centaur. These tests became part of the Project Beyond program and for the first time demonstrated the ability of AI to autonomously perform complex maneuvers in aerial combat beyond visual visibility (BVR).

During the three flights conducted from May 28 to June 3, 2025, the Centaur AI took full control, using data from the Gripen E onboard sensors to plan and execute combat operations. He not only controlled the aircraft, but also gave the pilot signals about the need to launch missiles, which indicates a high level of human-machine interaction.

In one of the tests, the Centaur AI battled a human-manned Gripen D fighter in real-world BVR conditions, demonstrating adaptability and effectiveness in dynamic aerial duels. According to Helsing representatives, AI training is equivalent to accumulating dozens of years of pilot experience, but it takes only a few hours, which opens up new horizons for the rapid development of combat systems.

Saab emphasizes that the integration of AI into the Gripen E is not aimed at replacing the pilot, but rather serves to support and enhance his capabilities in complex combat scenarios. Thanks to the modular architecture of the aircraft's software, AI can be quickly updated and adapted to new threats.
