Patent for hurricane management through sound: a new approach from an American inventor

A fragment of the patent

Imagine this: you are not just listening to thunder in the distance, but you can stop it yourself. It sounds like science fiction, but American engineer Andrew Waxmanski has filed a patent for a device that can control hurricanes and tornadoes using sound. This document, registered under the number WO/2025/118473, is already available in the registry of the World Intellectual Property Organization.

The inventor himself is no stranger to science: he previously worked on turbulence control systems in aviation. Now he suggests using sound waves to influence the elements.

The Waxmanski system is not just speakers, but a whole complex that includes:

- A network of phased sound generators (operating in the range of 20-40 kHz), which are installed on mobile platforms within a radius of 30-60 km from the storm;

- Feedback algorithms that collect data from weather balloons and satellites in real time;

- Ultrasonic pulses that create so—called "acoustic lenses" - they can either weaken or enhance eddy currents.

According to the idea, the sound causes a "resonant instability" inside the hurricane — this causes it to lose strength or even shift away from populated areas. In laboratory conditions, using a tornado model in a wind tunnel with a diameter of 12 meters, it was possible to reduce the rotation speed by 17% in just 90 seconds.

So far, meteorologists are skeptical but interested in this idea. Dr. Laurent Moreau from the European Center for Medium-term Weather Forecasts noted: "Theoretically, this is possible, but field testing will require international consent and serious environmental expertise."

Part of the money for the project comes from the Climate Shield venture fund, and the first real test of the technology is planned to be conducted in 2027, during the hurricane season in the Pacific Ocean.

If everything works out, it could be a real breakthrough in the fight against climate disasters. In the meantime, it looks more like science fiction, which is gradually getting closer to reality.
