Chinese "telepathic" radar: metaplets + SAR = signal-free communication

The new system does not generate a detectable energy signal, protecting broadcasters from jamming and missile attacks.A group of researchers from China claims to have developed a "telepathy" radar that allows broadcasters to maintain radio silence.

This can provide high-speed communications, while eliminating the risk of user interception and jamming or missile attacks.Since its first widespread use during World War I, Chinese "telepathic" radars have played a crucial role in providing communications during the war. However, electromagnetic waves providing radio communication can be tracked. This puts users at risk because they are actually transmitting their location.

The team has developed a system capable of transmitting large amounts of data without generating an active signal. The solution uses a "smart surface" of hundreds of programmable metamaterial tiles. These, in turn, are illuminated by satellites transmitting images using synthetic aperture radar (RSA).

The tiles themselves can switch between "on" (0° phase) and "off" (180° phase) states. This allows them to encode messages directly into the radar echoes of the satellite.

The Chinese "telepathic" radar system does not emit any additional detectable energy into the environment, meaning its signal merges with the natural electromagnetic background.

"This communication system works by scattering and modulating received SAR echoes, eliminating the need for active transmission of electromagnetic waves," the researchers write in their paper. "This ensures the secrecy and security of communications, while significantly reducing the risks of detection."
