L3Harris to integrate electronics into new American ships to hunt submarines

T-AGOS ship in the ocean with towed antenna

T-AGOS-25 — not armed, but extremely important

L3Harris Technologies has entered into an agreement with Austal USA to escort the first T-AGOS-25 class ship for the US Navy. This is not a warship, not a destroyer, and certainly not an aircraft carrier. But his role is one of the most subtle and necessary. T-AGOS-25 is a floating underwater surveillance station, whose task is to listen to the ocean and find submarines that try not to make a sound.

Such ships don't fire, but without them, other ships and planes don't know where to look for a threat.

L3Harris is responsible for the "insides" of the ship

L3Harris acts as a single system supplier — that is, it takes over the integration of key components: electrical and propulsion systems. It's not just installing engines, but creating a cohesive architecture where everything works together — from power supply to motion control.

Special attention is paid to "quiet" work. In order for a ship to hear a submarine, it must be as quiet as possible. L3Harris is responsible for ensuring that the actuators and electronics do not interfere with sensitive sonar systems.

Underwater tracking is the key to anti—submarine defense

The T-AGOS-25 is the heir to the legendary Stalwart—class ships that have been tracking Soviet submarines for decades. The new ship will use modern towed sonar stations capable of detecting sounds at great depths and distances.

He does not attack, but determines the location of the target, transmits data to destroyers, submarines and PLO aircraft. Without such scouts, the anti-submarine defense loses its eyes and ears.

Where will these ships operate

T-AGOS-25 will be deployed in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. His zone is open waters where enemy submarines can hide and wait in the wings. This is especially true in the Pacific Ocean, where the activity of the submarine forces of other countries is growing.

The presence of such ships allows the US Navy to control underwater routes and protect strike groups.

Boeing upgrades P-8A Poseidon: new contract for HAAWC high-altitude anti-submarine torpedoes

HAAWC

Boeing's $61 million deal transforms the P-8A Poseidon from a patrol aircraft into an attack aircraft with high-altitude torpedoes.

Boeing's new $61.2 million contract for the supply of additional High Altitude Anti-Submarine Warfare Weapon Capability (HAAWC) modules marks a significant expansion of the U.S. Navy's long-range anti-submarine warfare capability. The contract is based on a multi-year agreement designed to keep the Navy's fleet of P-8A Poseidon patrol aircraft at the forefront of underwater threat detection and neutralization. By expanding the target area of enemy submarines, this step highlights a fundamental shift towards more survivable and permanent operations at sea. As underwater threats become more complex, such improvements are crucial to maintaining maritime dominance.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries launched the 11th Mogami-class frigate for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces

Mogami-class frigate

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), one of Japan's leading industrial and defense concerns, launched the eleventh Mogami-class frigate on July 3, 2025 for Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). The ceremony took place at the company's shipyard in Nagasaki, one of the country's key shipbuilding centers, where many military and civilian vessels have been built since the founding of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in 1884.

The new frigate was named Tatsuta, named after the Tatsutagawa River, which is a tributary of the Yamatogawa River and flows near the city of Ikoma in Nara Prefecture. This name continues the tradition of naming ships after natural sites and historical sites, typical of the Japanese Navy. The Tatsuta frigate has become another representative of a series of new-generation corvettes designed to enhance anti-submarine and multi-functional combat effectiveness.

Mogami-class frigates belong to the new generation of ships of the FFM (Multi-purpose Frigate) project, created under the JMSDF modernization program. They are designed to replace outdated patrol ships and light frigates, providing higher speed, improved electronic weapons and the ability to operate in remote areas of the ocean. The ships are equipped with modern radars, missile defense systems, anti-ship missiles and the possibility of basing UAVs.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has a rich tradition in the field of shipbuilding and defense production. The company was founded in 1884 as part of the Mitsubishi Concern, starting with the lease of the Nagasaki state shipyard and the subsequent large-scale development of the shipbuilding industry. Throughout its history, MHI has demonstrated technological leadership on several occasions, including the recent launch of the first fully autonomous Soleil vessel in 2022. Today, the company remains a key player in the defense and energy sectors of Japan and the world.

Anduril has handed over its first autonomous underwater vehicle Dive-LD to the US Navy

 (AUV) Dive-LD

On Friday, Anduril, a defense technology company, announced the transfer of its first autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) Dive-LD to the US Navy's 1st Unmanned Underwater Vehicle Squadron (UUVRON-1). This is an important step in expanding the U.S. Navy's capabilities in the field of unmanned underwater systems and integrating autonomous technologies into naval operations.

Dive-LD is designed to perform long-term and deep-sea missions. It can stay underwater for up to 10 days and reach a maximum diving depth of 6,000 meters. The modular design of the device allows it to be quickly reconfigured to perform various tasks, including reconnaissance, surveillance, reconnaissance, mine defense, anti-submarine warfare and high-resolution hydrographic bottom survey. One of the key features of the Dive-LD is its 3D-printed shell, which allows for fast and cost-effective custom adjustments, increasing the device's adaptability for military and commercial applications.

In December 2024, the sailors of the 1st group of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVGRU 1) and the 3rd Squadron (UUVRON 3) of the US Navy conducted practical exercises with Dive-LD at the base in Kittitas, Washington. The exercise demonstrated the U.S. Navy's commitment to rapidly deploying advanced unmanned systems in collaboration with innovative defense companies such as Anduril, with support from the U.S. Office of Defense Innovation (DIU).

The Dive-LD transfer is not only a technical breakthrough, but also corresponds to the broader strategic goals of the US Department of Defense. In August 2024, Dive-LD was selected to participate in the second wave of the Pentagon's Replicator program, which aims to rapidly mass-produce autonomous systems to enhance deterrence and combat capabilities. To meet the increasing demand, Anduril is building a new production facility in Quincy Point, Rhode Island, which will begin operations in early 2026 and will produce up to 200 Dive-LD units per year.

With increasing geopolitical tensions and the increasing strategic importance of the underwater sphere, platforms such as Dive-LD are becoming critical to maintaining the tactical superiority and global maritime dominance of the U.S. Navy. The 1st Unmanned Underwater Vehicle Squadron (UUVRON-1) and its units play a key role in integrating new autonomous capabilities into the militarymarine operations, providing testing, validation, and readiness for global deployment.
