AIR DEFENSE Battery Diehl Defence IRIS-TSLM |
Switzerland has taken an important step in strengthening its national air defense capabilities by signing a program agreement with Germany on the joint purchase of IRIS-T SLM (GBAD MR) medium-range air defense systems. The document was signed by Urs Locher, Director of Armaments of Switzerland, and Vice Admiral Carsten Stavicki, Director of Armaments of Germany. This deal has become a key element of the European Initiative to create an integrated air defense system, the Sky Shield (ESSI).
About the IRIS-T SLM system
The IRIS-T SLM is a modern mobile medium—range air defense system designed to protect against a wide range of aerial threats, including aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and drones. The system is equipped with a high-precision IRIS-T missile with active radar guidance, which ensures high target interception efficiency.
The significance of the agreement for Switzerland and Germany
- Strengthening defense capabilities: The joint purchase will allow both countries to increase the level of airspace protection, especially in the face of growing threats.
- Cost-effectiveness: Combining purchases reduces costs by scaling up production and optimizing logistics.
- Integration into the European Air defense System: The Agreement promotes the development of the European Sky Shield Initiative aimed at creating a unified and coordinated air defense system in Europe.
European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI)
ESSI is a project bringing together several European countries to create an integrated air defense and missile defense system capable of effectively countering modern air and missile threats. Joint procurement and standardization of weapons are key elements of this initiative.
Prospects and impact
- Increased compatibility: The joint use of the IRIS-T SLM will facilitate interaction between the armed forces of Switzerland, Germany and other ESSI participants.
- Strengthening the security of the region: Joint efforts will strengthen collective security and deter potential aggressors.
- Long-term cooperation: The agreement paves the way for further joint projects in the field of defense and technology.
