Commissioning of Gabriel Mk missiles.5 in the Finnish Navy
The Finnish Navy has officially accepted Gabriel Mk.5 anti-ship missiles from Israel, seven years after choosing this system in 2018. The missiles were designated SSM2020 and became one of the two main weapons of the Finnish Navy, along with naval mines.
Currently, Gabriel Mk.5 missiles are installed on upgraded Hamina-class missile boats. In the future, it is planned to install them on new Pohjanmaa-class corvettes. The first of the corvettes is scheduled to be launched in May 2025, which will significantly enhance the combat potential of the Finnish Navy.
The choice of Gabriel Mk.5 in 2018 was a step towards replacing the outdated MTO85M anti-ship missiles (known in Finland as the RBS 15 Mk2 manufactured by Saab). The new system provides improved accuracy, range and reliability in modern naval combat operations.
