EPISODE 049: ENERGY STORM IN THE PERSIAN GULF — FACTS, ESCALATION, CONSEQUENCES

Persian Gulf energy infrastructure attacks
March 2026 // Energy Security // EPISODE 049

Iran struck energy infrastructure across the region. What's confirmed, what's exaggerated, and why this changes the rules of the game.

⚡ IN BRIEF: WHAT HAPPENED

Iran conducted one of the largest operations since the conflict began, employing ballistic missiles and strike UAVs. Targets: critical energy infrastructure in Gulf countries and sites in Israel.

Confirmed facts:

  • ✅ Qatar: Confirmed strike on Ras Laffan LNG hub. Damage present, some lines stopped.
  • ✅ UAE: Incidents at Habshan and Bab facilities, partial capacity halt.
  • ✅ Saudi Arabia: Reports of strikes near Yanbu — under verification.
  • ✅ Bahrain: Strikes on industrial zones, civilian casualties reported.
  • ✅ Israel: Rocket fragments damaged private aircraft at Ben Gurion, airport operated with restrictions.
❗ Important: Statements like "infrastructure destroyed" or "region in chaos" are not confirmed by independent sources. The real picture: serious escalation, but not collapse.

🗺 STRIKE GEOGRAPHY: WHAT'S CONFIRMED

Country Facility Status Source
Qatar Ras Laffan (LNG hub) Extensive damage, years to repair Al Jazeera
UAE Habshan, Bab, Fujairah Partial shutdown, debris damage Al-Monitor
Saudi Arabia Yanbu, eastern fields Isolated incidents confirmed, scale being verified Al Jazeera
Bahrain Maamir industrial zone, King Fahd Causeway Strikes recorded, bridge damage unverified HRW
Israel Ben Gurion Airport 3 private aircraft damaged by shrapnel, flight delays Anadolu Agency

📊 MARKETS REACT: OIL, GAS, PANIC?

Brent crude: Rise to $110-115/barrel on news.

LNG futures: Volatility in Asia and Europe.

Market reaction: Nervousness exists, but global system hasn't collapsed — strategic reserves, supply diversification, and expectations of quick partial recovery are working.

💡 The market punishes uncertainty. Without data on long-term capacity loss — correction is likely.

🔍 WHAT'S EXAGGERATED IN INITIAL REPORTS

Claim Reality
"Fujairah infrastructure practically destroyed" Incidents and shutdowns recorded, but not "total destruction"
"Bahrain-Saudi bridge destroyed" Damage reports exist, but no confirmed information about critical destruction
"Entire Gulf energy system in ruins" Strikes are massive, but system operates in limited mode, not paralyzed
"Ben Gurion taken out of service" Airport operated with restrictions, no terminal damage

Sources: Al-Monitor, Al Jazeera, HRW, Anadolu Agency

🎯 STRATEGIC SHIFT: WHY THIS MATTERS

Iran is changing tactics:

  • From precision military strikes → to systemic pressure on energy and logistics
  • Targets now include not just military objects but globally significant hubs: Ras Laffan (25% of world LNG), Fujairah (key oil terminal), Ben Gurion (Israel's air gateway)

What this means:

  • Stakes rise: US, EU and Asia forced to respond to supply threats
  • Economic lever: energy becomes a tool of political pressure
  • Chain reaction risk: any disruption in the Gulf instantly reflects on prices and logistics worldwide
⚠️ This isn't the "end of global energy." But it's a new phase of hybrid conflict where a pipeline strike can be more effective than a base strike.

🔮 WHAT TO WATCH NEXT

  • Capacity restoration: How quickly Qatar and UAE return export volumes
  • Countermeasures: Military or economic response from US-led coalition
  • Hormuz Strait: Any tanker incidents = trigger for new escalation
  • Oil prices: Holding above $100/barrel for more than 2 weeks = recession signal

💬 INSTEAD OF CONCLUSION

"The energy war doesn't begin with explosions. It begins with silence in the control room when the operator sees: the pressure in the pipe is falling, and the reserve is already at zero."
Tonight's events aren't the apocalypse. But they're a clear signal: the conflict has moved to a plane where global economic stability depends on the resilience of a few key nodes in the Persian Gulf.
Keep your hand on the pulse. And on the emergency exits.

Saudi Arabia deploys THAAD missile defense shield with American training

THAAD Mobile launcher and personnel

The Saudis are finally launching their first THAAD battery. For those who are not in the subject, this is a mobile missile defense system that is capable of shooting down enemy missiles at high altitude even in the upper atmosphere.

The crews were trained in the USA, which means that everything is serious and top notch. THAAD is able to destroy ballistic missiles, accelerating to almost 3 kilometers per second, and hits the target with a direct hit, without explosives — pure kinetics. It's like hitting a nail with a hammer, without too much trouble.

The system is tightly connected to the powerful AN/TPY-2 radar station, which sees a target for hundreds of kilometers and tells the launchers: "We give the target — hit!". The complex itself is fully mobile — if necessary, it will be quickly transferred to another location. And he is not alone in the defensive chain — other systems work with him, for example, Patriot, creating a multi-level shield.

The deployment of THAAD in Saudi Arabia is a clear challenge amid rising tensions in the Persian Gulf. This is their attempt to defend themselves to the maximum and show that they cannot be taken so easily.

Important things about THAAD

- The speed of the interceptor missile is about 2,800 m/s (almost 3 km/s)

- Interception altitude — up to 150 km

- Range — up to 200 km

- The principle of operation is a direct physical hit (hit-to-kill) without explosion

- Mobile complex: six launchers with eight missiles each

- AN/TPY-2 radar — an eye for hundreds of kilometers, sees even small objects

- The crews are trained in the USA, ready for battle

So Saudi Arabia now has powerful defenses capable of literally shooting down enemy missiles while still in the sky, rather than waiting for them to land. This is a serious step towards security, especially when there is such a hot region around.

The United States used AGM-158C LRASM anti-ship missiles in the Middle East for the first time

AGM-158C LRASM

According to Pentagon budget documents, the US Air Force and Navy for the first time used the AGM-158C LRASM (Long Range Anti-Ship Missile) long-range anti-ship missiles in combat conditions in the Middle East. The launches were probably carried out on board F/A-18E/F Super Hornet aircraft of the US Navy and B-1B strategic bombers of the US Air Force — to date, these are the only platforms certified for the use of LRASM.

The AGM-158C missile, developed on the basis of the AGM-158B JASSM-ER, has a range of up to 930 km and is capable of hitting naval targets in conditions of limited reconnaissance and suppression of the enemy. It is equipped with an infrared homing head, an electronic warfare system and a two-way data link, which allows it to adjust the route in real time and select priority targets.

The first information about the possible combat use of LRASM appeared in the budget reports of the US Navy for fiscal year 2025, which indicated "operational costs related to the deployment of the AGM-158C to CENTCOM AOR" — the area of responsibility of the US Central Command, including the Middle East. The Pentagon has not officially confirmed the missile's involvement in specific operations, but Reuters sources say the launches were conducted in June 2025 at facilities in the northern Persian Gulf.

This event marks the transition of LRASM from the status of a "promising weapon" to the category of a real instrument of force. Previously, the missile was successfully tested with the B-1B in 2013 and with the F/A-18E/F in 2018, but has not been used in combat conditions to date.

Iran has placed naval mines in the Persian Gulf — Washington fears blocking the Strait of Hormuz

Iran loaded naval mines onto ships in the Persian Gulf in June 2025, which caused serious alarm in Washington due to fears that Tehran was planning to block the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important and busiest shipping lanes, through which about a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas pass. These actions followed shortly after the start of Israeli strikes on Iranian facilities on June 13 and were recorded by American intelligence.

Although the mines were loaded onto the ships, they were not placed directly in the Strait, and it remains unclear whether they were unloaded from the ships. Washington does not rule out that the loading could have been a show of force or a ploy by Tehran, which wanted to show the seriousness of its intentions, but was not going to actually block the strait.

The Strait of Hormuz is a key route for oil and LNG supplies, especially to Asian markets including China, India, Japan and South Korea. Blocking it could lead to a serious escalation of the conflict and cause significant disruptions in global energy trade, as well as a sharp rise in oil prices.

Iran has repeatedly threatened to close the strait in response to Israeli and American strikes on its territory, but an official decision to block it has not been taken by Iran's Supreme National Security Council. At the same time, the United States and its allies continue to closely monitor the situation, assessing possible risks of further escalation in the region.

Iran is considering closing the Strait of Hormuz, threatening global oil supplies

Iran is seriously exploring the possibility of closing the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important sea route through which about a quarter of the world's oil supplies and a significant portion of liquefied natural gas pass. This was stated by Ismail Kousari, a member of the Commission on National Security and Foreign Policy of the Iranian parliament, Rokna news agency reports.

The closure of the strait will be a serious blow to global energy security, as the Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Indian Ocean and is a key route for oil exports from the Persian Gulf countries. If such a step is implemented, oil supplies may be seriously disrupted, which will lead to a sharp increase in energy prices — experts predict an increase in oil prices to 110-130 dollars per barrel and above.

Consideration of the issue of closing the Strait is taking place against the background of large-scale Israeli airstrikes on Iran's nuclear and military facilities as part of Operation Lion Rising. In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched rocket attacks on Israel as part of Operation True Promise 3. These events have increased tensions in the region and forced Tehran to consider extreme measures.

In addition, Iran has warned that it will attack military bases and naval vessels of France, Britain and the United States in the Middle East if they support Israel. Such an escalation could lead to further destabilization of the situation in the region and in the global energy market.

In light of these events, the largest shipowners are already being cautious by rejecting new contracts for sailing through the Strait of Hormuz, which further complicates the logistics of oil and gas supplies.

Thus, the possible closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran is a serious challenge to the global economy and security, which can lead to global consequences.

Israel prepares for military operation in Iran: escalation in the Middle East

Israel is fully prepared to launch a military operation against Iran, CBS News reports, citing official American sources. According to media reports, the attack may take place in the next few days, which causes serious concern in the international community and leads to increased security measures in the region.

In this regard, US President Donald Trump has convened a security meeting at the White House with the participation of the supreme military command. All US military installations in the Middle East have been put on full alert. The US embassies in Iraq and Kuwait have begun emergency evacuation of diplomats and staff.

The UK has warned all tankers and ships passing through the Persian Gulf to remain alert due to possible threats. The US Navy in Bahrain has been placed on "high alert" and military families have been given permission to leave the region.

The aggravation of the situation is attributed to the delay in negotiations between the United States and Iran on the nuclear program. The US president's special Envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, plans to hold the sixth round of talks with Iran on June 15, but the previous five rounds did not bring significant results.

Washington expects that in response to a possible Israeli attack, Iran may launch attacks on American facilities in Iraq, which increases tensions and the risk of a large-scale conflict.

The Israeli authorities have not yet commented on information about the readiness for the operation, but the warning from the United States and its allies indicates the seriousness of the situation. President Trump stressed that the United States will not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons, and is ready for any scenario.

Iran is building the largest catamaran missile ship: a new step in the development of maritime capabilities

Satellite images confirm that Iran has begun construction of the largest missile warship to date. The vessel is being built at the facilities of the Navy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the port of Bandar Baonar in the south of the country. This project marks a significant expansion of the IRGC's maritime capabilities and demonstrates Tehran's desire to strengthen its position in the region.

The new catamaran-type ship surpasses the existing Shahid Soleimani-class corvettes in size and firepower. Although the official details of its mission have not yet been disclosed, an analysis of the vessel's design suggests that it will have an increased payload, extended range and enhanced armament. These characteristics make the ship an ideal tool for carrying out tasks in the Persian Gulf and beyond.

The construction of such a vessel is part of Iran's strategy to modernize its fleet and counter external threats. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has traditionally played a key role in ensuring the safety of Iran's maritime routes and protecting its national interests. The new ship is likely to be used for patrol, reconnaissance, and operations against surface and aerial targets.

Special attention is drawn to the unique design of the catamaran, which provides increased stability and the ability to accommodate more weapons. This includes missile systems, artillery, and possibly unmanned vehicles. This configuration makes the ship a universal means of performing both defensive and offensive tasks.

The project also highlights Iran's efforts to diversify its military technology. Despite international sanctions, the country continues to develop its own defense industry, relying on domestic resources and innovation. The new ship will become a symbol of these achievements and may affect the balance of power in the region.

The appearance of such a vessel may cause concern among neighboring countries and world powers, especially against the background of growing tensions in the Persian Gulf.

The United States is strengthening its military presence in the Middle East

The massive airlift of military equipment and property to the area of responsibility of the US Central Command (CENTCOM) has been ongoing for the past two weeks, with @tzvai_tracker tracking 95 cargo and air flights to air bases in the region by the Air Mobility Command (AMC) The United States Air Force in the period from March 25 to April 3.

The list includes at least two dozen C-17 and C-5 flights from Osan Air Base in South Korea to the Middle East, which we now know carried several U.S. Army MIM-104 Patriot surface-to-air missile batteries and the Terminal High missile defense system. Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), probably designed to protect the Gulf states from missiles fired in the future by Iran.

Iran strengthens military presence in the Persian Gulf: new missile systems on strategic islands

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran has announced the deployment of modern anti-aircraft missile systems (SAM) on three islands in the Persian Gulf. The systems are installed in  territories located in the immediate vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the world's oil supplies pass.

    Strategic location and capabilities

The new air defense systems are capable of hitting sea and land targets, including military bases and enemy vessels. According to Iran's state media, this is a response to growing threats from regional and global players.  The Abu Musa and Tunb islands have been controlled by Iran since the 1970s, but their military infrastructure remained limited until recently.

    Technical details and objectives

The characteristics of the complexes are not disclosed, but sources emphasize their "impressive" range and accuracy. The systems are integrated with a surveillance network and can be used to block the movement of enemy ships in the Strait of Hormuz. This strengthens Iran's ability to control a key sea route, which can become an instrument of pressure in the face of escalating tensions.

    Context and consequences

The deployment of the air defense system comes against the backdrop of Iran's deteriorating relations with the United States and its allies in the region. The IRGC, which controls the country's strategic missile forces, regularly upgrades its arsenal, including ballistic missiles and drones. Experts note that the new complexes increase the risks of a direct military clash in the Persian Gulf zone, where ships of the international coalition are already stationed.
