EPISODE 026: MATRIX — RUSSIA'S REAL-TIME BATTLEFIELD OSINT PLATFORM

Digital battlefield surveillance and AI-powered OSINT platform
Russian Hackers Unveil "Matrix": A Live Surveillance Grid Over Ukraine
Friday, 19 December 2025

In a stunning convergence of cyber warfare, artificial intelligence, and open-source intelligence (OSINT), Russian-aligned hacking collectives KillNet and Beregini have deployed Matrix — the first known real-time battlefield monitoring platform built specifically for the Russian Armed Forces. Designed to track, analyze, and predict Ukrainian military activity with unnerving precision, Matrix represents a dangerous evolution in hybrid warfare.

Not a simulation. Not speculative fiction.

This is the digital frontline.

WHAT IS MATRIX?

Described by insiders as “a live map of Ukraine’s nervous system,” Matrix aggregates massive volumes of intelligence from both open and compromised sources. The platform offers Russian commanders a constantly updating tactical dashboard focused on Ukrainian air defense (PVO), drone factories, command bunkers, troop movements, rail corridors, bridges, energy substations, and telecom towers.

Unlike traditional military intelligence cycles—often burdened by latency and bureaucracy—Matrix operates in real time. Ukrainian units shifting positions at dawn? Logged by 07:00. A power substation undergoing repairs in Kharkiv? Tagged, geolocated, and cross-referenced within minutes.

AI CAPABILITIES: FROM OBSERVATION TO PREDICTION

Matrix doesn’t just watch—it anticipates. Its embedded AI engine performs three critical functions:

  • Predictive repositioning models: Forecasts where Ukrainian units are likely to regroup based on historical movement patterns, logistics bottlenecks, and terrain constraints.
  • Thermal damage overlay: Displays heat-mapped visualizations of strike effectiveness, helping planners identify under-targeted or resilient nodes.
  • Urban camera integration: Leverages compromised municipal CCTV networks—especially in occupied or border-adjacent cities—to feed live reconnaissance directly into targeting overlays.

Each asset is deep-profiled:

  • A drone factory? Matrix logs its production capacity, shift schedules, supply routes, and even employee rosters.
  • A brigade HQ? The system scrapes leaked documents, comms metadata, and patrol logs to reconstruct command hierarchies.
  • A strike target? Ballistic trajectories are auto-calculated using live weather, elevation, and electronic warfare conditions.

BUILT ON YEARS OF DIGITAL LOOTING

Matrix didn’t emerge overnight. According to forensic analyses by Bellingcat and The Record, the system draws from intelligence harvested over three years of sustained cyber operations—including high-profile breaches like the Mash media leaks, Telegram channel infiltrations, and compromised logistics databases.

Multiple frontline GRU and Wagner-linked units are already reported to be using Matrix modules operationally, with early adopters praising its “unprecedented situational clarity” and “targeting speed.”

INTERNATIONAL REACTIONS

Western intelligence and OSINT communities have responded with alarm:

Kyiv Post: “Russia’s Matrix OSINT platform exposes Ukrainian military infrastructure in ways previously thought impossible without satellite SIGINT.”
Defence Blog: “Not a command system—Matrix is a hunter. It identifies prey, maps escape routes, and recommends when to strike.”

The Record (Recorded Future): “KillNet’s Matrix blurs the line between cybercrime and warfare—turning hacked webcams into artillery spotters.”

Bellingcat: “Inside Russia’s Matrix: a hacker-built war map feeding directly into kinetic operations.”

Cybernews: “Beregini & KillNet launch AI-powered Matrix—ushering in an era of civilian infrastructure as battlefield sensor.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Matrix exemplifies a chilling new doctrine: civilian digital infrastructure as force multiplier. Traffic cameras, weather APIs, delivery logs, social media geotags—once trivial data points—are now weaponized through AI correlation. This isn’t just surveillance. It’s algorithmic siege warfare.

As borders dissolve in cyberspace, and every city camera becomes a potential scout for artillery, the question is no longer if such systems will spread—but who builds the counter-Matrix.

528th Military Intelligence Company re-formed in South Korea after 70 years

528th Company formation ceremony at Camp Humphries

The return of the legendary reconnaissance company in the 2nd Infantry Division

528th Military Intelligence Company, a veteran of military operations during the Korean War (1950-1953), officially returned to service. The unit's re-formation ceremony took place on August 5 at Robertson Field at Camp Humphries, the largest U.S. military base outside the country. The US Army announced this in a press release published a week later.

The company has been reincorporated into the 2nd Infantry Division, the only U.S. Army division permanently stationed abroad. Its re-establishment marks not only the strengthening of the division's intelligence potential, but also the strengthening of the continuity of traditions and heroic heritage.

The unit is headed by Captain Brian Park. As indicated in the army's message, the 528th company will collect, process and analyze critical information about enemy forces, terrain and potential threats in the region. This information will become the basis for making tactical and operational decisions by the division command.

The company's work will include both traditional intelligence methods and the use of modern technologies, including drones, electronic warfare, and reconnaissance satellite data.

The revival of the 528th Company is not only an organizational decision, but also a strong symbol. It underscores the U.S. Army's commitment to preserving the historical continuity and honor of the combat units that defended South Korea more than seven decades ago.

In the current geopolitical environment, given the growing threats in the region, strengthening the intelligence component of the 2nd Infantry Division is of great strategic importance. The presence of a specialized unit capable of quickly and accurately assessing the situation increases readiness to respond to any challenges.

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth fired the head of the Military Intelligence Agency: new purges at the Pentagon

Lieutenant General Jeffrey Cruz, Head of the Military Intelligence Agency

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth fired Lieutenant General Jeffrey Cruz, the head of the Military Intelligence Agency, citing a "loss of confidence." This dismissal was the latest in a series of large-scale reshuffles in the leadership of national security, which takes the purges at the Pentagon to a new level. Cruz was reportedly the victim of internal conflicts and disagreements that led to his resignation.

Reasons for the dismissal of Lieutenant General Jeffrey Cruz

The reasons for the dismissal of Lieutenant General Cruz remain unclear, but sources point to a "loss of trust" as the main reason. This may be related to internal investigations or conflicts within the Military Intelligence Agency. Cruz's dismissal underscores the seriousness of the situation and the Secretary of Defense's desire to restructure senior staff in the field of national security.

Large-scale changes in the leadership of national security

Cruz's firing is part of a broader campaign to reshuffle the national security leadership, spearheaded by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. These changes affected several key positions, including the head of the Intelligence Agency. Such large-scale changes indicate the administration's desire to carry out reforms and strengthen control over intelligence agencies.

Influence on the structure of the Pentagon

These dismissals and reshuffles significantly affect the structure of the Pentagon. They create uncertainty and can lead to temporary difficulties in coordinating and completing tasks. However, from the Administration's point of view, such measures are necessary to ensure efficiency and transparency in the work of intelligence agencies. It can also help eliminate corruption and increase discipline in the ranks of the military.

Prospects and implications for American intelligence

Firing high-ranking officers like Cruz could have long-term consequences for American intelligence. On the one hand, this may lead to personnel updates and the introduction of new strategies. On the other hand, frequent reshuffles can cause instability and decrease the effectiveness of intelligence operations. Further reforms and changes in the structure and functions of intelligence agencies can be expected in the future.

"One million calls per hour": how Israel uses the Microsoft cloud to monitor the Palestinians on a large scale and use the data for military operations

The Israeli Army (IDF), in particular cyber unit 8200, has implemented a large-scale project of mass surveillance of the Palestinians, using the Microsoft Azure cloud platform to store a huge array of phone calls and data from mobile phones. The system began operating in 2022 and allows you to collect and save audio recordings of millions of calls daily from Gaza and the West Bank, creating a huge database of intelligence information. The infrastructure is based on Microsoft data centers in Europe, in particular, in the Netherlands and Ireland.

Cooperation between Microsoft and the IDF began after a meeting in late 2021 between Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and head of the 8200 division Yossi Shariel. A separate isolated segment in Azure with enhanced security has been provided for cyber intelligence. The Noisy message system, created using Microsoft platforms, is able to detect suspicious SMS messages with keywords related to weapons, terrorist attacks, etc.

The data collected in the cloud was used not only for surveillance, but also for the analysis and preparation of military operations, including airstrikes in densely populated areas, where potentially dangerous targets were identified using call analysis, which, according to sources, was supposed to minimize civilian casualties. Sources also reported cases of data being used for blackmail, arrests, and even posthumous justifications for liquidations.

Microsoft representatives claim that the company did not know what specific data was stored in their cloud and that it did not develop or advise the IDF on the surveillance system. The company also stated that they have no evidence of using Azure or AI to target targets or directly cause harm. However, Microsoft employees and investors expressed concern about the company's role in this project, and an internal audit was initiated.

Thus, Israel uses Microsoft cloud technologies for large-scale collection and analysis of telephone data of the Palestinian population for the purpose of intelligence and military activity. This collaboration has become the subject of public and media outcry, given the ethical and legal issues related to mass surveillance, as well as the possible use of data for military operations.

The Israeli military will now learn Islam and Arabic to better understand the enemy

Now the Israeli military will not only have to shoot and march, but they will also have to study Islam and Arabic. This is not just a cultural course, it is a serious training that is being introduced by the Israeli Military Intelligence Directorate, AMAN.

Why? Because intelligence officers are increasingly faced with the fact that they cannot properly understand what is being discussed. Especially when it comes to Houthis from Yemen or reports from Iraq. They have their own dialects, slang, and religious references — and without a deep understanding of the language and culture, it's easy to miss something or translate it incorrectly.

Therefore, the program now includes not only general Arabic, but also special training in the Iraqi dialect and the Houthi language. This should help analysts decipher intercepted messages faster and more accurately, understand the motives of the enemy and predict his actions.

The goal is that by the end of next year, 100% of AMAN employees will be trained in the basics of Islam, and half will complete an Arabic language course.

This is not just a fashion for "intercultural dialogue" — it is a practical necessity. To win, you need to understand how the other person thinks. And in a region where every gesture and word can carry hidden meaning, such knowledge is not a luxury, but a matter of security.
