The US Air Force has confirmed flight tests of the YFQ-42A unmanned fighter prototype

YFQ-42A in the Sky: California Test launch

The US Air Force has officially confirmed that the prototype of the YFQ-42A unmanned combat aircraft has begun a flight test program. The tests are being conducted at a secret test site in California, where flight characteristics, autonomous systems and interaction with manned platforms are being tested. This stage was an important milestone in the implementation of the ambitious Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program.

General Atomics and the US Air Force: joint development

The YFQ-42A was developed by General Atomics, a leading American manufacturer of unmanned systems, known for projects such as the MQ-9 Reaper. The aircraft was created according to the requirements of the US Air Force as part of a strategy to create "friendly drones" (loyal wingmen) capable of escorting and supporting manned fighters in combat.

This is one of two competitive prototypes under CCA — the second, the YQ-44A Fury, was developed by Anduril Industries.

Key data for the CCA program

According to the Air Force, the YFQ-42A has already provided valuable data on:

  • The airworthiness of the platform
  • The level of management autonomy
  • The possibilities of integration with command systems and weapons

These tests allow us to assess how much the drone will be able to act as an "extension" of the pilot, performing reconnaissance, electronic warfare and even strikes without risking the crew.

The future lies in satellite drones and autonomy

The goal of the CCA program is to create a large number of modular, relatively inexpensive unmanned aircraft capable of operating in tandem with fifth-generation fighters (F-35, F-22) and future sixth-generation platforms (NGAD). Such drones will increase the combat zone, reduce the burden on the pilot and increase the survival rate of the group.

It is expected that the final decision on the choice of the platform and the transition to mass production will be made in fiscal year 2026.

Merlin will teach you how to fly autonomously: the company integrates its pilot into the Northrop Grumman Beacon test platform

Merlin, a renowned developer of technologies for guaranteed autonomous control of fixed-wing aircraft, has announced an important partnership. It has entered into an agreement with the defense industry giant, Northrop Grumman, to integrate its Merlin Pilot system into the new Beacon testing ecosystem.

The Beacon system, introduced in June 2025, is not just another stand. This is a new generation open test environment created by Northrop Grumman to accelerate the development and deployment of autonomous technologies for aviation. Beacon provides partners such as Merlin with the opportunity to test, validate and refine their autonomous flight systems in conditions as close as possible to the real requirements of government and military customers.

The integration of Merlin Pilot into Beacon is a significant step forward. It allows Merlin to test its technology on an advanced platform, speeding up the path from concept to certification and practical application. For Northrop Grumman, this is an opportunity to fill its Beacon ecosystem with the best available solutions from leading developers, strengthening its position in the race for autonomous combat systems.

MightyFly Autonomous Cargo eVTOL: 600-mile range and military application prospects

The California-based company MightyFly has successfully demonstrated the capabilities of its Cento autonomous cargo drone, equipped with a patented autonomous load management System (ALMS). The tests took place at New Jerusalem Airport in California and were organized in cooperation with the US Department of Defense. During the event, the aircraft demonstrated a full cycle of operations — from autonomous takeoff to loading, unloading, balancing and transporting cargo without human intervention.

The stated flight range attracted particular attention. — 600 miles (about 970 km), which significantly exceeds the performance of most modern eVTOL devices. For comparison, according to various sources, the average range of the existing models ranges from 30 to 250 km. This high level of autonomy makes Cento a promising tool for logistical and even military tasks.

The ALMS system allowed eVTOL to independently place and secure loads in a special compartment. This opens up new horizons in the field of delivery automation, especially in hard-to-reach or dangerous areas. According to the company's representatives, such technologies can be used not only in the civilian, but also in the military sphere, ensuring fast and safe transportation of supplies to the front lines.

The flight tests were conducted as part of a U.S. Air Force program aimed at accelerating the development of autonomous hybrid-electric cargo aircraft with vertical takeoff and landing. Such devices can replace traditional delivery systems in conditions of limited infrastructure, such as runways or roads.

Sikorsky relies on AI and automation in manned helicopters: future technologies are already in development

The heads of the American aircraft manufacturer Sikorsky, part of Lockheed Martin, said that artificial intelligence (AI) and automation systems will play an increasingly important role not only in unmanned aerial vehicles, but also in traditional manned helicopters. This announcement marks an important shift in the approach to aircraft engineering, where humans remain in the control center but receive powerful support from autonomous systems.

One of Sikorsky's key achievements in this area is the Matrix technology, which is an autonomous flight control system capable of integrating into existing helicopter models, including the well-known UH-60 Black Hawk. Matrix combines advanced algorithms, sensors and computing modules, allowing the helicopter to perform tasks such as:

- automatic takeoff and landing;

- navigation in difficult conditions;

- avoiding obstacles;

- Real-time route planning;

- reducing the burden on the crew by partially or fully automating the flight.

Matrix technology is considered as an important step towards the realization of the concept of "flying taxi", as well as as the basis for the creation of hybrid helicopters combining the capabilities of manned and unmanned aircraft. It can be used for both civilian and military purposes, from delivering cargo to hard—to-reach areas to rescue operations and strike missions.

The future of helicopter aviation

According to Sikorsky experts, the introduction of AI into helicopter control is not a replacement for a pilot, but rather an enhancement of his capabilities. In conditions of high threat or difficult weather conditions, automation can improve the safety and accuracy of the mission. Such technologies are especially relevant for the modern battlefield, where the reaction speed and awareness of the crew can decide the outcome of an operation.

In addition, autonomous functions can be used within the framework of the "Loyal Wingman" concept, in which one pilot controls not only his helicopter, but also a number of accompanying UAVs performing reconnaissance or strike missions.

With the development of artificial intelligence and machine learning, such systems will become even more adaptive and intelligent, capable of making decisions in real time and minimizing the risk of human error.

US Marines to Test Autonomous Black Hawk Flights in 2025 for Resupply Operations

The US Marines will test autonomous flight on an artificial intelligence platform on Black Hawk helicopters in 2025.The purpose of the service is to evaluate how autonomous aircraft can support resupply operations, regardless of whether they are deployed from naval vessels or operating from expeditionary bases on land.The MATRIX provides advanced flight mode capabilities, offering a variety of options.: He can assist staff as a virtual co-pilot or perform fully autonomous flights without a crew on board.The Marines will interact with the aircraft via a tablet, which will allow them to adjust mission parameters before and after takeoff.
