EPISODE 033: THE IRAN OPTION — AMERICA’S SILENT BUILDUP IN THE GULF

America's silent buildup in the Gulf: USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and military assets
Not a drill. Not a bluff. This is the architecture of escalation.

In the shadow of global headlines about Venezuela, Gaza, and border theatrics in Minneapolis, something far more consequential is unfolding across the Persian Gulf. The United States—under President Donald Trump’s increasingly hawkish posture—is assembling a warfighting machine unlike anything seen in the region since Operation Midnight Hammer.

And this time, it’s not just posturing.

THE STRIKE PACKAGE IS ALMOST COMPLETE

Satellite feeds, flight trackers, and CENTCOM social media confirm what intelligence circles have whispered for weeks: the U.S. is finalizing its strike architecture against Iran.

At its core lies the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group, now transiting the South China Sea en route to the Arabian Gulf. Onboard:

  • F-35C Lightning IIs from VMFA-314 — stealthy, sensor-fused, and battle-tested in deep-strike roles.
  • F/A-18E/F Super Hornets — hardened veterans of Middle Eastern skies.
  • EA-18G Growlers — electronic warfare platforms designed to blind Iranian air defenses before the first bomb drops.

But the carrier is just the tip.

Beneath the waves, Ohio-class SSGNs like the USS Georgia loiter—each carrying 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles in vertical launch cells repurposed from Trident tubes. Add destroyers and cruisers bristling with additional VLS cells, and the theoretical salvo capacity approaches 400 precision-guided missiles. That’s enough to decapitate command nodes, radar sites, and ballistic missile silos across western Iran in under an hour.

This isn’t deterrence.

This is targeting readiness.

AIRPOWER: THE INVISIBLE FIST

On land, the buildup is equally telling.

The 494th Fighter Squadron—fresh from RAF Lakenheath—has already landed in the theater with a dozen F-15E Strike Eagles. These two-seaters aren’t just for show. Equipped with APKWS laser-guided rockets and AMRAAMs, they’ve proven lethal against swarms of Shahed drones in past engagements. Now, they’re positioned as the first line of defense against Iran’s inevitable retaliation.

Rumors swirl of additional F-35A deployments from Europe and CONUS, though official sources remain tight-lipped. What *is* confirmed: the U.S. now has three F-15E squadrons in the region—Seymour Johnson, Mountain Home, and Lakenheath—all capable of both strike and air superiority missions.

And then there are the ghosts.

While unconfirmed, B-2 Spirit stealth bombers are almost certainly on standby at Diego Garcia or Whiteman AFB. In 2024, they led the surgical strike on Natanz. If Tehran’s nuclear facilities are back on the list—and all signs suggest they are—the B-2s will be the opening act.

DEFENSE-IN-DEPTH: THAAD, PATRIOT, AND EVACUATIONS

The U.S. isn’t just preparing to strike—it’s preparing to survive the blowback.

Across Israel, Jordan, and Qatar, THAAD batteries and Patriot PAC-3 MSE systems are being repositioned. Their mission: intercept Iranian ballistic missiles like the Emad or Kheibar, which can reach Tel Aviv or Al Udeid in under 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, non-essential personnel have been pulled from forward bases, including parts of Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar—CENTCOM’s nerve center. This isn’t panic. It’s protocol. And it signals that commanders expect kinetic escalation within days, not months.

THE TEL AVIV COORDINATION MEETING — TODAY

As of January 24, 2026, CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper is in Israel, meeting with IDF generals. Simultaneously, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff—Trump’s shadow diplomats—are pushing Netanyahu on Rafah and hostages. But beneath the diplomatic veneer, one topic dominates: Iran.

Intelligence sharing. Target lists. Deconfliction protocols. Rules of engagement.

This isn’t just consultation.

It’s final synchronization.

SO… IS WAR IMMINENT?

Let’s be clear: no official U.S. source has declared an imminent strike. The White House still calls it a “military option.” The Pentagon cites “regional stability.”

But you don’t deploy an aircraft carrier, three F-15E squadrons, SSGNs, THAAD batteries, and stealth bombers just to send a message.

You do it when you’ve already decided the message won’t be enough.

In the calculus of power, force concentration equals intent. And right now, the Gulf is becoming the most heavily armed chessboard on Earth.

The only question left isn’t if—

but when the first Tomahawk leaves its tube.

Sources

This is not speculation. This is open-source reality.
Follow the assets. Follow the silence. Follow the fear.

The US Air Force is upgrading its arsenal: a request for new GBU-57 bomb fuses

GBU-57 bomb

The US Air Force has announced the beginning of a search for new solutions and technologies aimed at improving and expanding the arsenal of super-powerful penetrating ammunition GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP). These bombs were first used in combat in June 2025, when B-2 Spirit attacked Iran's nuclear facilities, dropping 14 such munitions. This event highlighted their strategic value.

One of the key areas of modernization is the development of new fuses that will increase the effectiveness of ammunition when hitting deeply buried and well-protected targets. In addition, the Air Force is also interested in providing additional sources for the production of other important components GBU-57/B, as well as in maintaining current stocks of these high-tech bombs.

A new generation of strategic bombers, including the promising B-21 Raider, will also be equipped with the ability to use MOP. However, according to experts, the B-21 will be able to carry only one such bomb per mission due to its enormous weight and size — more than 14 tons. For comparison, during testing, these bombs were also successfully used from B-52 Stratofortress aircraft.

These actions by the US Air Force indicate long-term plans to maintain superiority in strategic aviation weapons and enhance the ability to defeat hard-to-reach targets. Given the geopolitical tensions and the growing number of well-fortified facilities held by potential adversaries, such munitions are becoming critical elements of the US defense strategy.

Can C-130 Hercules use heavy-duty GBU-57 munitions to destroy Iranian bunkers?

C-130 Hercules

Heavy-duty Penetrating Ammunition GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) It is considered one of the most effective means of destroying deeply buried and protected objects. Its mass is about  14 tons , and the warhead is almost  2.4 tons of explosives. So far, the only carrier capable of using this munition has been the B-2 Spirit strategic bomber.

However, in the face of the growing threat from Iran and its nuclear program, as well as the need to strike well-protected underground facilities such as the Fordo Research Center, military experts are increasingly considering the use of other platforms, including C-130 Hercules transport aircraft.

Theoretically, the C-130 has sufficient payload capacity to carry GBU-57, especially if we talk about the modifications of the C-130J Super Hercules family, which have reinforced landing gear, improved engines and advanced avionics. The problem lies not so much in the technical feasibility of the drop, but in  accuracy of guidance,  height of the drop, maneuverability of the aircraft and  vulnerability to air defense  when approaching the target.

Unlike the B-2, which can penetrate deep into enemy territory due to its unobtrusive characteristics, C-130 — subsonic transport aircraft with high radar visibility. This makes it extremely vulnerable when performing combat missions over an area with advanced air defense systems.

However, in certain scenarios the C-130 can act as a logistical carrier, delivering MOP ammunition to forward bases, from where they can be used by more suitable carriers such as B—1B Lancer or the promising B-21 Raider. Options for equipping specialized versions of the C-130 with guidance systems and automated drop equipment are also being considered, which could potentially expand their combat capabilities.

Thus, although the C-130 will not replace the B-2 as the main means of striking the most protected targets, it can become an important element in the logistical and operational support of such operations, especially in conditions of a limited number of stealth bombers.

The United States may provide Israel with "bunker bombs" to attack the nuclear facility at Fordo

GBU-57

If the United States decides to provide Israel with more direct support in its possible attack on Iran, one option would be to provide so-called "bunker bombs" capable of causing significant damage to deeply hidden facilities such as the Fordo nuclear complex, located deep inside the mountain.

The main candidate for this role is the American GBU-57 guided bunker buster aircraft bomb, also known as the Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP). Developed by Boeing, this aerial bomb is capable of penetrating into the ground to a depth of 61 meters or piercing up to 19 meters of reinforced concrete before exploding. The mass of the bomb is about 13.6 tons, and the warhead capacity reaches almost 2.5 tons of explosives.

The GBU-57 was designed specifically to defeat such hard-to-reach and deep-lying targets as Iran's underground nuclear facilities and fortified military installations. The B-2 Spirit strategic stealth bomber is used to deliver the bomb, capable of invisibly penetrating airspace with a dense air defense system. In the future, it is planned to use a newer B-21 Raider platform.

The use of such bombs can have far-reaching political and military consequences. A strike on Fordo using GBU-57 could seriously damage Iran's nuclear infrastructure, but at the same time jeopardize any chance of Iran resuming negotiations on its nuclear program, which were sought by former US President Donald Trump.

The B-2 Spirit nuclear bomber is practicing penetration into the disputed airspace

B-2 Spirit

The B-2 Spirit nuclear bomber, developed by Northrop Grumman, recently underwent large-scale tests as part of a joint exercise between the United States and its allies. This stealth aircraft is capable of penetrating contested airspace, providing a strategic advantage due to its stealth and range.

The B-2 Spirit can reach anywhere in the world in a matter of hours, making it a key element of nuclear deterrence and global force projection. During the exercises, the bomber practiced the tasks of overcoming modern air defense systems and delivering pinpoint strikes against strategic targets.

While the future U.S. Air Force B-21 "Raider" platform continues to attract media attention before its deployment, the B-2 remains an important asset in the arsenal of the U.S. Air Force. Its unique characteristics and capabilities make it indispensable in modern conditions, when issues of airspace control and strategic security are becoming increasingly relevant.

The US Air Force has successfully tested a lightweight version of the QUICKSINK anti-ship aerial bomb

On June 4, 2025, the US Air Force successfully tested a new lightweight version of the QUICKSINK anti-ship munition at the Gulf Test Range at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. During the test, the B-2 Spirit strategic stealth bomber dropped a 500-pound (about 226 kg) high-precision aerial bomb, demonstrating its flexibility and expanding the arsenal of weapons to defeat naval targets.

The QUICKSINK program is aimed at creating inexpensive, but powerful and accurate weapons capable of effectively hitting both stationary and moving surface ships. The new lightweight version of the munition expands the operational capabilities of combat unit commanders, allowing them to quickly respond to threats in the marine environment.

Dan Lehoski, Commander of the 53rd Air Wing, described QUICKSINK as an "affordable and revolutionary solution" for neutralizing naval targets. The project is being implemented jointly by the US Air Force Research Laboratory, the Air Force Combat Test Center and the Air Combat Operations Command.

The tests took place against the backdrop of the build-up of China's naval forces, which has the world's largest fleet, which poses serious challenges to US dominance in the Pacific Ocean. The development of QUICKSINK is designed to increase the effectiveness of American forces in countering such threats.
