Poland buys 46 radars for air defense — $1.6 billion for sky protection and economy

46 radars to avoid missing any targets

Poland is investing serious money in its security: a contract worth 1.6 billion dollars (5.8 billion zlotys) has been signed with the PGZ-Narew consortium for the supply of 46 passive location radars. This is not just a purchase of equipment, it is part of a broad strategy to create a dense dome of air defense over the country. From 2030 to 2038, Poland will receive 28 radars for firm orders and another 18 for options. All these are building blocks in a defense system that must see everything that flies.

Passive tracking — they see, but do not emit

The peculiarity of these radars is the principle of operation. They do not emit a signal like conventional radars. Instead, they catch radio emissions from airplanes, drones, and missiles—from their radars, communications, and even from the electronics on board. This makes them virtually invisible to electronic intelligence equipment. The enemy does not realize that he has been spotted.

Such systems are particularly effective against low-profile targets: drones, cruise missiles, and low-visibility aircraft. They complement active radars and create a network in which the threat has almost nowhere to hide.

Narew — not just radars, but a defense system

Radars are part of the Narew program, which is built around short— and medium-range anti-aircraft and anti-missile systems. This is a response to the threats that Poland sees in the east: massive drone strikes, cruise missiles, and tactical ballistic strikes. Narew must intercept these targets on approach, protecting cities, military bases and infrastructure.

Passive radars are the eyes of this system. They are the first to detect the threat, transmit the data to the command posts and direct the missiles to the target.

The money goes into Polish hands, both for defense and for the economy

The contract was signed with the PGZ-Narew consortium, which is headed by the Polish Arms Group (PGZ), a state defense corporation. This means that most of the money will remain in the country: for development, production, training, and service. This is not only a strengthening of defense, but also an investment in our own industry.

Poland is now actively increasing defense spending to 4.8% of GDP in 2026. And such contracts show that the country is not just buying weapons, it is building its own defense system with Polish technologies, Polish factories and Polish specialists.

Australia to order Japanese frigates: historic contract for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries

Фрегат проекта Mitsubishi Heavy Industries

Japan's largest defense export contract

Earlier this month, Australia announced its decision to purchase modern frigates from the Japanese company Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. This has become the most significant defense contract for a Japanese manufacturer to date and an important milestone in expanding Tokyo's presence on the international arms market. The deal marks not only technological recognition, but also a strategic shift in Japan's defense policy.

How Japan got out of the arms export ban

For a long time, Japan has adhered to a strict policy of non-proliferation of weapons. The country's Constitution restricts the activities of the Armed Forces to self-defense, and in 1967, a complete ban on the export of defense products was actually introduced. However, in 2014, the government of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe radically changed course, relaxing the ban.

A new approach has been adopted: arms exports are allowed on a case-by-case basis, subject to strict compliance with the conditions. This allowed Japan to begin participating in international projects, including joint technology development and equipment supplies for the Allies.

Three principles of defense equipment transfer

The updated "Three Principles of Defense Equipment and Technology Transfer" define the framework for arms exports. The sale can only be approved if the following conditions are met:

The buyer is not under the UN embargo and is not involved in an active armed conflict.

The transfer clearly contributes to international peace, security, or the security of Japan itself.

Tokyo exercises strict control over end-use and retransmission, including mandatory prior consent for any transfer to a third party.

These principles allow Japan to maintain a responsible approach, avoiding weapons falling into the hands of unintended users and maintaining the trust of the international community.

The strategic importance of the deal for the region

The contract with Australia is not just a commercial success. It strengthens the strategic partnership between the two countries in the face of growing tensions in the Asia-Pacific region. Joint defense projects contribute to closer coordination, compatibility of weapons, and enhanced collective security.

For Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, this order opens the door to other international markets. The company demonstrates that Japanese technologies are able to compete with the world's leading manufacturers in the segment of modern warships.

Militarization of Silicon Valley: Google, OpenAI, and Meta integrate into the U.S. military-industrial complex

Major Silicon Valley technology companies — Google, OpenAI, Meta, as well as new players like Elon Musk's xAI — have actively engaged in cooperation with the US military and defense sector, which represents a large-scale militarization of the technology industry. After a long period when many of them refused to participate in military projects for ethical and reputational reasons, now economic and strategic incentives have changed the situation.

The reasons for this shift include:

- Huge expenses for the development of advanced AI technologies, which require significant funding. Defense contracts with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) provide long-term and large-scale investments, with contracts of up to $200 million per company (Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI), aimed at creating AI systems for national security and the armed forces.

- The strategic importance of AI for future conflicts and national security: The US Department of Defense considers AI as a key factor in ensuring technological superiority and has already created special structures to finance these developments.

- The weakening of companies' internal policies to limit cooperation with the military industry, partly under pressure from the political climate and economic benefits.

- A variety of military applications of AI, including data processing, cybersecurity, autonomous systems and battlefield decision support, which expands the capabilities of technology and gives companies new markets.

- Joint integration initiatives and pilot projects with military departments aimed at accelerating the implementation of AI in real military tasks.

Thus, the "militarization of Silicon Valley" is a shift in the relationship of technology giants with the military sector, where previously principled detachment was replaced by active involvement in defense—related projects. This reflects economic pressures, the strategic agenda, and the changing landscape of the AI and technology industry.

Germany pays 260 million: Israeli "anti-missile glasses" for German transport workers

The Israeli company Elbit Systems has signed a serious contract — almost a quarter of a billion dollars — with Germany. What will the Germans buy? The latest missile defense systems for its A400M transport aircraft. We are talking about DIRCM (Directed Infrared Countermeasures) technology, which means in translation from "military": a system that sees a heat-guided missile flying at an airplane and blinds it with a beam so that it misses.

Why is this important? Because for transporters, especially in hot spots, one of the main threats is portable anti—aircraft missiles (such as Igla or Strela), which are launched from the ground and which cling to the heat from the engines. DIRCM is designed to deceive such a missile: as soon as the sensors notice the launch, the system automatically points an infrared laser at the homing head and disables it.

Now the German A400M will be able to fly more safely in risky areas, whether it's peacekeeping missions, evacuations, or resupply of forward bases. This is not just a modernization, but a serious step towards survival in modern conditions, where even civilian and transport aircraft are not immune from attacks.

Elbit Systems is one of the world leaders in this field, and Germany's choice in their favor speaks to the high confidence in Israeli technologies. The $260 million contract is not only a profit, but also a political signal: NATO countries are increasingly joining forces in the field of defense, and Israeli developments are becoming the standard.

Qatar purchases the FS-LIDS anti-drone system from the United States in the amount of 1 billion dollars

FS-LIDS

Government The United States has announced the conclusion of a major defense contract with Qatar for the supply of an integrated anti-drone system Raytheon Fixed Site Low, Slow, Small Unmanned Aircraft System Integrated Defeat System (FS-LIDS). The agreement amounts to 1 billion dollars, making Qatar the first international buyer of this advanced technology.

FS-LIDS is a multi—level system designed to detect, track, and neutralize small drones (UAS), including light drones used for both reconnaissance and terrorist purposes. The system combines radars, electronic warfare equipment, optoelectronic sensors and kinetic methods of destruction, providing reliable protection of strategically important objects.

This acquisition is part of Qatar's efforts to modernize its **national air defense system**, especially amid the growing threats from unmanned aerial vehicles in the Middle East region. Recent years have shown how actively drones are used in military and terrorist operations, starting with attacks on oil facilities in Saudi Arabia and ending with their large-scale use in conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.

The United States positions this contract as an important step in strengthening its strategic partnership with one of its key allies in the Persian Gulf. He also highlights the growing interest of the countries of the region in modern anti-drone systems, which are becoming increasingly relevant in the context of evolving security threats.

The delivery of the FS-LIDS system will allow Qatar to significantly increase the level of protection of its military bases, government facilities and civil aviation infrastructure from potential attacks using small UAVs.

Poland receives another batch of American Abrams tanks

A new batch of 19 M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams main battle tanks manufactured in the USA has arrived in Poland. This delivery is part of a large-scale agreement between Poland and the United States, signed in April 2022, providing for the supply of 250 Abrams tanks with a total value of more than 20 billion Polish zlotys (about 4.8 billion US dollars at the time of the deal).

The M1A2 SEPv3 tanks are the most modern version of the legendary Abrams platform. They are equipped with improved electronic systems, digital interfaces, upgraded armor protection and enhanced means of survival on the battlefield. These features make the Abrams one of the most technologically advanced tanks in the world.

Regular arms shipments from the United States are part of NATO's efforts to strengthen the defense capabilities of Eastern European countries in the face of geopolitical tensions with Russia. Receiving advanced tanks allows Poland to significantly strengthen its ground group and increase the level of interaction with American and allied forces.
