Luxembourg has launched its first reconnaissance satellite, all with a camera from Israel

Prepared NAOS satellite

A small country, a big step into space

Luxembourg, one of the smallest countries in Europe, has taken a giant step — on Thursday evening, its first NAOS reconnaissance satellite was launched into orbit using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. This is not just a scientific project. This is an application for participation in global space surveillance. At the same time, the country has neither a space program like the United States or China, nor its own aerospace industry.

But Luxembourg decided: if you can't build everything yourself, assemble the best in the world and do it under your own flag.

NAOS: optics from Israel, assembly in Italy, money from Luxembourg

The NAOS (New Space-based Observatory for Surveillance) satellite is the result of international cooperation. Its platform was built by the German-Italian company OHB, but the "eyes" — a high—precision optical camera - was supplied by the Israeli defense corporation Elbit Systems. Israel has long been considered one of the leaders in the production of reconnaissance optics, and choosing in its favor is a logical step for those who want to get clear images from orbit.

The entire project is funded by the Luxembourg government and is estimated at 168 million euros. This is serious money for a country with a population of 680,000 people and an army of 1,000 fighters.

Why does an army of 1,000 people need a satellite?

At first glance, it looks strange. But it's not about the army, it's about the data. Luxembourg is a financial center, and it is critically important for it to see what is happening in the world. Climate change, migration flows, environmental disasters, instability in other regions — all this affects the economy and security.

Its satellite gives the country independent access to the images. Previously, we had to buy them from other countries or commercial companies. Now you can plan the shooting for your own tasks, not depend on other people's priorities and receive information at the right time.

A new level of space partnership

NAOS is not just a technical project. This is an example of a new model: small states go into space not alone, but through deep partnership. They buy technologies from leading players, combine them and create their own systems.

For Israel, this is another success in exporting defense technology. For Italy, it is a confirmation of its role in the European space industry. And for Luxembourg, it is the beginning of a new chapter: the country is turning from a passive consumer of data into an active participant in space exploration.

Elbit Systems is developing an aviation version of the Iron Beam laser system for Israeli fighter jets

The Iron Beam laser system in action

Israel launches laser weapons into the air: Elbit is working on an aerial version of Iron Beam

The Israeli defense concern Elbit Systems has begun developing an aviation modification of the Iron Beam laser missile defense system. While the ground-based version of the system is already being tested as part of the Iron Dome ecosystem, its technology is now being adapted for installation on board Israeli Air Force combat aircraft.

This step marks the transition from ground-based laser systems to aerial platforms capable of protecting not only stationary objects, but also aircraft themselves from drones, missiles and other small-scale threats.

How does the Iron Beam work and why is it important to get it into the air

Iron Beam is a directed energy system that uses a high—power laser to destroy targets at short ranges. It is effective against:

Tactical Drones (UAV)

Rockets (like Qassam)

of Small cruise missiles

On the ground, the system complements Iron Dome radars and missiles, reducing the cost of interception. In the air, its task is to defend the fighter and protect a group of aircraft from drone attacks, especially in conditions of intense electronic warfare, where traditional means can be suppressed.

Possible platforms: F-16, F-15 and F-Although Elbit Systems does not officially disclose which aircraft will be equipped with the aerial Iron Beam, analysts suggest that potential carriers may be:

The F-16 Barak is the backbone of the Air Force fleet and is being actively upgraded

The F-15 Baz is a heavy fighter aircraft with high energy output

The F-35 Adir is a fifth—generation stealth fighter where compactness and stealth are critical.

For the F-35, laser integration is particularly relevant: it will allow maintaining low radar visibility without using external suspensions, and at the same time increase survivability in the face of growing threats from drones.

Technical challenges and prospects

Transferring a laser system to an aircraft is a difficult engineering task. She demands:

A compact but powerful laser module

Efficient cooling system

Reliable energy source

High-precision vibration and speed guidance system

However, advances in laser miniaturization and the development of solid-state systems make the project realistic. According to experts, the first tests on the pilot platform may begin as early as 2026-2027.

Germany pays 260 million: Israeli "anti-missile glasses" for German transport workers

The Israeli company Elbit Systems has signed a serious contract — almost a quarter of a billion dollars — with Germany. What will the Germans buy? The latest missile defense systems for its A400M transport aircraft. We are talking about DIRCM (Directed Infrared Countermeasures) technology, which means in translation from "military": a system that sees a heat-guided missile flying at an airplane and blinds it with a beam so that it misses.

Why is this important? Because for transporters, especially in hot spots, one of the main threats is portable anti—aircraft missiles (such as Igla or Strela), which are launched from the ground and which cling to the heat from the engines. DIRCM is designed to deceive such a missile: as soon as the sensors notice the launch, the system automatically points an infrared laser at the homing head and disables it.

Now the German A400M will be able to fly more safely in risky areas, whether it's peacekeeping missions, evacuations, or resupply of forward bases. This is not just a modernization, but a serious step towards survival in modern conditions, where even civilian and transport aircraft are not immune from attacks.

Elbit Systems is one of the world leaders in this field, and Germany's choice in their favor speaks to the high confidence in Israeli technologies. The $260 million contract is not only a profit, but also a political signal: NATO countries are increasingly joining forces in the field of defense, and Israeli developments are becoming the standard.

Morocco Turns to Israel for Advanced Arms Procurement Amid Tensions with France

In a significant shift in its defense procurement strategy, Morocco has chosen the Israeli company Elbit Systems as its primary supplier of advanced weaponry. This decision marks a notable realignment in the North African kingdom's military partnerships and underscores growing tensions between Morocco and its former major arms provider, the French conglomerate KNDS.

The Moroccan Army recently signed a landmark contract with Elbit Systems for the acquisition of 36 Atmos 2000 self-propelled artillery systems. The Atmos 2000 is renowned for its precision-guided munitions capability, long-range firing accuracy, and superior mobility on various terrains. This cutting-edge technology will significantly enhance the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces' (FAR) firepower and operational capabilities.

This deal represents not only a substantial upgrade to Morocco's arsenal but also a strengthening of ties between Rabat and Tel Aviv following the normalization of relations under the Abraham Accords in December 2020. Since then, both countries have deepened their cooperation across multiple sectors, including defense, cybersecurity, agriculture, and water management. The Atmos 2000 purchase further solidifies this strategic partnership.

The decision to pivot toward Israel comes amid escalating friction between Morocco and France, particularly regarding arms sales. For decades, France has been one of Morocco's primary suppliers of military equipment through companies like KNDS, which includes Nexter and Thales. However, recent disputes over delayed deliveries, perceived inefficiencies, and political disagreements have strained this relationship.

Reports indicate that Morocco grew frustrated with KNDS due to delays in fulfilling existing contracts and dissatisfaction with the performance of certain systems provided by the French firm. These issues coincided with broader diplomatic tensions between Rabat and Paris, culminating in a cooling of bilateral relations over matters such as migration policies, counter-terrorism cooperation, and historical grievances.

As a result, Morocco began exploring alternative suppliers capable of meeting its modernization needs more effectively and efficiently. Israel emerged as an attractive option given its reputation for producing high-quality, battle-tested weapons systems tailored to contemporary battlefield requirements.

Morocco's move to procure advanced weaponry from Israel carries several strategic implications:

1. Enhanced Military Capabilities: The Atmos 2000 systems will bolster FAR's ability to respond swiftly and accurately to regional threats, enhancing national security and deterrence.

2. Diversification of Partnerships: By diversifying its sources of armaments, Morocco reduces dependency on any single supplier while expanding its global network of defense partners.

3. Regional Dynamics: The acquisition of Israeli-made weapons could alter the balance of power in North Africa and the Sahel region, where Morocco plays a pivotal role in combating terrorism and maintaining stability.

4. Symbolic Gesture: Choosing Israel over traditional allies like France sends a clear message about Morocco's willingness to forge new alliances based on mutual interests rather than historical ties.

Morocco's decision to partner with Elbit Systems reflects its commitment to modernizing its armed forces and addressing emerging security challenges. While the shift away from France may signal a recalibration of Morocco's foreign policy priorities, it also highlights the country's pragmatic approach to ensuring its sovereignty and resilience in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape. As this collaboration unfolds, it will be closely watched by other nations seeking similar advancements in defense technology and strategic partnerships.
