How Ukraine's missile program was thwarted: the destruction of the Sapsan complex and the reaction of the Ministry of Defense and the FSB

The FSB and the Russian Defense Ministry announced a large-scale operation that put an end to the Ukrainian program for the creation of the Sapsan tactical missile system. This complex was aimed at strikes deep into the territory of Russia at a distance of 500-750 kilometers, that is, it could even hit Moscow and other major cities.

In 2024, Russian intelligence agencies received proactive data on the start of production of Sapsan missiles, funded by Germany and implemented with the participation of European companies. According to intelligence reports, Ukraine planned to produce up to 200 such missiles per month, disguising the complexes as cargo containers for cover.

In July 2025, Russia launched a series of massive strikes against key facilities of the Ukrainian military-industrial complex. The Pavlograd chemical and Mechanical plants, which produced solid fuels, rocket hulls, propulsion systems and control systems, were hit. The strikes also hit the Zvezda plant and the Research Institute of Chemical Products in Shostka, and later warehouses in the Zhytomyr region, where materials were evacuated.

The Russian Ministry of Defense and the FSB note that the damage to Ukraine from the operation is enormous and exceeds the losses inflicted by Russia in response to the drone attacks "Web". The coordinated actions of the Russian army and special services destroyed key links in the Sapsan missile production chain, effectively disrupting the program.

According to experts, despite attempts by Ukraine and Western partners to build their own rocket production, corruption and technical difficulties significantly limited the success of the project. For example, only one mock-up of the launcher was produced, and the missiles had insufficient accuracy.

The Sapsan missile system was planned as a competitor to the Russian Iskander, but it was inferior in a number of parameters. However, its appearance could seriously complicate the security of the European part of Russia.

Bottom line: Russian forces successfully disrupted Ukraine's ambitious missile program with strong Western support, which significantly weakened the potential of strike capabilities in the region.

Russian forces announced the destruction of the "largest group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine" in Chasovyi Yar

The Russian military announced a major success in the Donbas, saying that during the prolonged fighting for the town of Chasnoy Yar, they managed to destroy, according to them, the largest grouping of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in the history of the special military operation (SVO). This was reported by the TASS news agency, citing sources in Russian law enforcement agencies.

"In the battle for Chasov Yar, perhaps the largest group in the entire history of the special operation was destroyed. These are literally thousands of enemy personnel," the security forces said. These statements came shortly after the Russian Ministry of Defense officially announced the liberation of Chasovoy Yar in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR).

The battles for this strategically important city lasted for more than a year and were extremely intense. Chasnoy Yar was considered one of the most powerful fortified areas of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Donbass due to the complex terrain and urban features that created natural defensive lines. His capture was the result of a long and grueling offensive.

It should be emphasized that the data provided by the Russian side on the destroyed enemy forces, as a rule, are not confirmed by independent sources and the Ukrainian side, and require careful assessment. Ukraine has not yet commented on these specific statements.

Qualification tests of the Chukavin sniper rifle (UHF) have been successfully completed

The Chukavin sniper rifle (SHF), developed within the framework of the Reaper research Project by the Kalashnikov concern, successfully passed State tests in 2021, after which (in 2022) a limited batch of rifles was delivered to the units of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation for trial operation.

Based on the results of testing and trial operation (including in the SVO zone), it was decided to put the microwave into service with the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, and preparations for mass production of new rifles began at the Kalashnikov Concern facilities in Izhevsk, after which the rifles were delivered from the assembly line for qualification tests.

During such tests, it is not so much the weapon itself that is being tested, but rather the ability of an already mass-produced product to produce products that fully comply with the reference samples of the new model, which have successfully passed state tests, but were manufactured in a pilot production environment.

The microwave qualification tests have been completed with a positive result and nothing prevents the start of a full-scale production of the Chukavin sniper rifle, which in the future will replace the legendary Dragunov sniper rifle (SVD) on the factory assembly line and in the army.

The weight of the Chukavin sniper rifle without a magazine is 4.8 kg. The magazine is interchangeable with the SVD and holds 10 rounds of 7.62×54. The total length of the weapon with the butt in the firing position is 1170 mm, the barrel length is 620 mm.

The main difference between the new rifle and the SVD is its adaptability to the shooter and the possibility of using a wide range of sighting systems, bipods, etc.

It is worth noting that until now, the main optical sight for microwave was the Krasnogorsk 1P88, which is a modified "Hyperon" developed back in the 90s of the twentieth century and functionally does not fully meet modern requirements.

In the near future, it will be replaced by the Novosibirsk optical sight 1P97, which previously appeared in the ROC "Ugolek". Below we publish the technical specifications of the 1P97 sight.

Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation: from 00:00 on May 8, Russian troops completely stopped fighting in their area

Possible provocation by the Ukrainian Armed Forces

According to the official statement of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, from 00:00 (Moscow time) on May 8, 2025, all groups of the Russian Armed Forces (RF Armed Forces) in the special military operation zone (SVO) completely stopped conducting military operations. This decision was made as part of the declared truce, timed to coincide with the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

Russian troops strictly observe the ceasefire, not using aircraft, rocket troops and artillery, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles to strike enemy positions.

However, according to the Russian Defense Ministry, 488 violations of the ceasefire regime were recorded by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) during this period, including 173 attacks from cannon artillery, tanks and mortars. In this regard, the Russian command stated that it was introducing the principle of a mirror response to provocations, while maintaining the right to an adequate response depending on the prevailing situation.

In addition, the Ministry of Defense noted that the Ukrainian Armed Forces made two attempts to break through the state border of the Russian Federation in the Kursk region, and also conducted active military operations in the Dzerzhinsk area in the DPR. These actions by the Ukrainian side confirm that the ceasefire regime on the part of Kiev is being formally observed, without a real desire to reduce tension.

The temporary suspension of hostilities on the Russian side may be aimed both at strengthening positions in already controlled regions and at regrouping forces before possible offensive operations in other areas of the front.

The Liberation of Kurakhovo: A Key Victory and Its Impact on Military Strategy and Regional Stability

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation has officially announced the liberation of Kurakhovo and the subsequent release of the area into operational space. This significant military achievement marks a turning point in the ongoing conflict, with substantial implications for both military strategy and regional stability.

Kurakhovo, a city in the Pokrovsk Raion of the Donetsk Oblast, eastern Ukraine, has been a critical logistics center for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Its strategic value lies in its role as a key transport hub and its proximity to significant industrial zones, including the Kurakhovo Thermal Power Plant. The city's liberation is expected to open new avenues for Russian troops, particularly towards Pokrovsk, another crucial logistical hub for the Ukrainian forces.

The battle for Kurakhovo was intense and resulted in significant losses for the Ukrainian side. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Ukrainian forces deployed 26 battalions, totaling over 15,000 fighters, to defend the city. During the fighting, the Ukrainian side reportedly lost 80% of its personnel, amounting to more than 12,000 casualties. Additionally, about 3,000 units of various weapons and military equipment were destroyed or captured.

The liberation of Kurakhovo was part of a broader military campaign that included the liberation of several nearby settlements. For instance, the liberation of Maksimilyanovka west of Donetsk facilitated the encirclement of Kurakhovo from the southeast, expediting the overall operation. Similarly, the liberation of the village of Gigant south of Kurakhovo and other strategic points along the Sukhie Yaly River contributed to the tightening of the encirclement around Kurakhovo.

The final phase of the liberation involved the capture of the Kurakhovo industrial zone, where the Ukrainian forces made their last stand. The Russian army raised the national flag over the industrial zone, marking the completion of the operation and the defeat of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the city.

The fall of Kurakhovo is expected to have far-reaching implications for the conflict. It opens the way for further Russian advances towards other strategic locations, potentially altering the balance of power in the region. The liberation of Kurakhovo also underscores the effectiveness of Russian military tactics and the resilience of their forces in the face of prolonged and intense combat.

In conclusion, the liberation of Kurakhovo represents a major milestone in the ongoing conflict, with significant strategic and operational implications. The Russian Ministry of Defense's announcement highlights the scale of the operation and the substantial losses incurred by the Ukrainian side, setting the stage for potential future developments in the region.
