Ukraine received German Vector WASP UAVs with microphones for artillery detection

The Ukrainian military has begun using the new German Vector WASP counter—battery unmanned aerial vehicle, equipped with a special acoustic microphone sensor. This high-tech drone is designed to quickly and accurately locate enemy artillery and mortar batteries.

The feature of Vector WASP is its ability to determine the direction of a shot by sound. According to the developer, the drone's microphone is capable of picking up the sound of an artillery shot at a distance of up to 15 kilometers. Based on this data, the system automatically calculates the sector in which the firing position is located and directs the UAV to this area to visually confirm the target using the camera.

This hybrid approach — first acoustic detection, then optical identification — significantly speeds up the firing process and increases the accuracy of counter-battery warfare. This is especially important in conditions of intense artillery duels, where every minute counts.

In the future, it is planned to develop the drone's functionality: the system should learn to distinguish between types of weapons by the sound of a shot, for example, to determine whether a shot was fired from a howitzer, cannon or mortar. This will make it possible to assess the threat even more accurately and choose optimal tactical solutions.

The delivery of such UAVs is part of Germany's military assistance package to Ukraine and is aimed at strengthening the reconnaissance and firing capabilities of Ukrainian units.

Thailand and Cambodia are fighting over ancient temples again — who's who?

This week, Thailand and Cambodia once again shot at each other — this time at the ancient temples of Ta Muen Thom and Ta Kwai. Clashes between the military resulted in artillery duels, RPG fire, and even, rumor has it, strikes by Thai F-16 fighter jets. Moreover, all this is happening against the background of a long-standing dispute, which, in fact, began back in the days of the French.

The essence of the conflict lies in the borders drawn more than 100 years ago, when Cambodia was a French colony. Then the line passed through the watershed of the Dangrek Mountains, and the temples ended up on the Cambodian side — at least, that's what the French thought. Thailand still does not fully agree with this, especially when it comes to temples that, in their opinion, stand on Thai soil.

The most famous stumbling block is the temple of Preah Vihear. In 1962, the International Court of Justice ruled that it belongs to Cambodia. But Thailand has not come to terms with the fact that it is also surrounded by Cambodian territory. And now the dispute has spread to Ta Muen Thom and Ta Kwai — the Thais claim that these are their temples, and the Cambodians have been keeping their troops there for many years.

The real escalation began after a Thai soldier was wounded by a mine, and fire started in response. Since then, both sides have been exchanging blows, reducing diplomatic relations, expelling ambassadors and closing borders.

Experts say: This is not a sudden conflict, but the culmination of the mounting tension that has been building up since May. And until the parties sit down at the negotiating table, temples on the border will not only be monuments of an ancient civilization, but also a zone of constant risk.

The Czech Republic threatened France: "Either fix the Caesars, or we won't pay!"

Military-technical relations between the Czech Republic and France have sharply cooled — Prague has officially threatened to suspend payments to the French-German defense company KNDS, which is to supply the Czech Republic with 62 modern Caesar 8x8 self-propelled howitzers. The reason? These Caesars, one after the other, fail critical checks and generally behave like moody sports cars: they look cool, but they break down at the most inopportune moment.

The Czech Ministry of Defense is no longer just unhappy, it is seriously concerned. The chief weapons officer, Lubor Koudelka, sent an official letter to KNDS with a harsh ultimatum: "Deal with the problems, and quickly." The document clearly states that until the howitzers are ready for military trials, the money will not flow further.

What's wrong with these guns? According to media reports and sources in the army, we are talking about several serious shoals.:

- Problems with chassis reliability, especially off—road. The car must be mobile, but it gets stuck or stalls.

- Violations in the operation of the guidance and fire control system — and this is critical for the accuracy of shooting.

- Notes on crew protection and tightness of compartments — especially important in conditions of possible use of weapons of mass destruction.

- Delays in the delivery of spare parts and technical documentation.

This is especially disappointing because the Czech Republic was counting on Caesar as the basis of new artillery power. These howitzers are wheeled, deploy quickly, can fire at 40+ km, and are ideal for mobile warfare. The contract was signed on a large scale: almost 1.5 billion euros, one of the largest in the history of the Czech military—industrial complex. And now everything can go downhill.

KNDS, by the way, is a joint structure where the French Nexter and the German Krauss-Maffei Wegmann work together. But the responsibility for Caesar lies mainly with the French. And they, to put it mildly, do not have the best record in terms of the timing and quality of supplies of such equipment. The same thing happened, for example, in other countries — Belgium and Denmark, which also complained about delays.

Now the Czech Republic demands: either to urgently refine the systems, or to postpone the deadlines, or — the worst option — to terminate the contract. Although the latter is unlikely: there are not many alternatives to Caesar on the market right now, and there is less and less time left before a complete rearmament.

KNDS has already stated that it is working to eliminate the comments. But the Czechs are running out of patience. If the vehicles do not pass full—fledged tests with the participation of combat crews by the end of the year, payments can be frozen and even fines can be expected.

Simply put: France has received a warning. It's not that the Czech Republic wants to give up the Caesars — it really wants them. But only if they work. In the meantime, get comments, get corrected, and don't forget about deadlines.

China has revealed an "iron man" for drones — an exoskeleton for soldiers of the future

The Chinese company Kestrel Defense has announced a cool thing — a new exoskeleton for soldiers who control drones and other advanced systems. The photo from social networks shows a fighter in an almost fantastic costume standing in position, ready to launch and control small drones.

This exoskeleton is not about super strength, but about endurance. It is designed specifically for those who spend hours sitting or kneeling, controlling UAVs, correcting artillery fire or collecting intelligence. Such tasks require stability and concentration, and an ordinary person quickly gets tired in an uncomfortable position. And here the joints in the legs and arms help: the suit takes on part of the load, holds the pose, not allowing the muscles to contract.

Imagine: an operator can sit quietly on a rock or stand in one place for half an hour without trembling or getting tired. This is critical when the success of a mission depends on accuracy. This is especially true for scouts and gunners who work in the field for several days.

It's not an Iron Man with jetpacks yet, but it's a very serious step. China is clearly betting on "smart" soldiers in "smart" suits — and soon such exoskeletons may become the norm on the battlefield.

Israel launched tanks in Deir el-Balah for the first time - what does this mean for the war in Gaza?

For the first time since the beginning of the war, Israeli tanks drove directly into the city of Deir el-Balah in the southern Gaza Strip. This is a serious signal: the ground operation has reached a new level. The Golani Brigade is behind this movement, one of the most experienced in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and it is now actively conducting exercises and offensive operations in the area.

Before the infantry and armor moved forward, powerful airstrikes and artillery fire swept through the city. The classic scheme: first we "clear" the way from above, destroy fortifications, minefields and possible ambushes, and then we go ourselves. This way they reduce the risks for their soldiers, especially when they have to climb into the city — every house there can be a trap.

The fact that tanks entered Deir el-Balah is not just a tactic, but a clear step towards larger-scale street fighting. Previously, the main actions were conducted in the northern part of Gaza, but now the focus has shifted to the south. And this suggests that Israel continues to put pressure, expanding the zone of control and, most likely, trying to dislodge the last pockets of resistance.

What's next? It all depends on how the militants respond. If the resistance is tough, there may be heavy fighting in the city. If not— the IDF will gain a foothold and possibly begin the next stage of the operation. One thing is clear: the war in Gaza is entering a new phase, and tanks are no longer needed in the narrow streets.

Spain strengthens artillery: purchase of 214 self-propelled howitzers as part of defense modernization

Spain is taking a decisive step in modernizing its army by announcing a comprehensive program to upgrade its artillery forces. As part of this initiative, the country plans to purchase 214 new self—propelled howitzers, of which 86 will be wheeled and 128 will be tracked. This diversity will ensure the flexibility and mobility of troops in various combat conditions.

This purchase is a key part of the broader industrial and technological security and defense plan approved by the Spanish Government in April 2025. The program aims not only to modernize the armed forces, but also to develop the domestic defense industry, as well as strengthen the country's technological independence.

One of the strategic guidelines of the plan was to achieve the level of defense spending in the amount of 2% of GDP, which corresponds to the recommendations of NATO. Investments in new artillery indicate that Spain is actively working to fulfill its obligations to the alliance and is increasing its combat readiness against the backdrop of growing geopolitical threats.

The acquisition of modern artillery should significantly increase the striking power of the ground forces and ensure their compliance with modern standards of warfare. The new howitzers are expected to be supplied by both domestic and European manufacturers, which supports logistical compatibility with other EU and NATO countries.

Thus, the artillery modernization program is becoming an important element of Spain's long-term strategy to strengthen national defense and participate in international operations.

Rheinmetall's South African division receives record order for artillery from NATO

Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM), a South African joint venture between German Rheinmetall and South African Denel, has received the largest order in its history for Assegai 155 mm artillery shells and propellant charges. The contract was signed in the second quarter of 2025 with an unnamed European member state of NATO. This event was an important step in strengthening the company's position in the international arms market.

According to the terms of the contract, deliveries should begin this year and last until the end of 2027. The volume of the order was not disclosed, but experts note that it is a significant amount, given the scale and duration of the project.

The range of Assegai ammunition produced by RDM includes a wide range of models: high-explosive, practical, low-sensitivity, lighting, infrared, smoke, projectiles with preformed fragments (PFF), as well as extended-range V-LAP projectiles. This diversity makes it possible to meet the different tactical needs of modern armies.

Recall that RDM is part of Rheinmetall's broader strategy to strengthen its presence in South Africa. In June 2025, the company also established a new subsidiary, Rheinmetall Resonant South Africa (Pty) Ltd, which specializes in the design of chemical industries and provides additional opportunities for the development of the defense and civilian sectors.

This agreement highlights the growing role of South Africa as a regional center for the production of high-tech weapons, and also demonstrates the trust of Western countries in products manufactured under international military-technical partnerships.

Japan demonstrates a prototype rail cannon on a test warship — a step forward in the development of the railgun

The new photos show a prototype rail gun mounted on a test surface combat vessel of the Japanese Navy. This turret installation represents an important milestone in the development of Japanese railgun technology, an electromagnetic weapon that fires projectiles with tremendous speed and range.

Japan's railgun project is moving much further than similar developments by the US Navy, which were postponed many years ago due to technical and financial difficulties. The Japanese prototype demonstrates progress in integrating the railgun onto a marine platform, which can significantly increase the firepower and range of naval weapons.

Railguns have a number of advantages over traditional artillery systems: high projectile velocity, no need for chemical powder, long firing range, and the ability to use relatively cheap projectiles. This makes them a promising weapon for modern naval forces.

Testing of the prototype will make it possible to evaluate the technical characteristics, reliability and combat capabilities of the rail gun, as well as determine the possibilities of its further implementation on Japanese warships.

Tiberius Aerospace presents the Sceptre guided munition at the Future Artillery Conference

At the Future Artillery conference in London, the young British defense company Tiberius Aerospace presented the 155 mm guided Sceptre ammunition. It is equipped with a ramjet engine and is capable of striking at a distance of up to 160 km. Scepter promises superior accuracy and significantly increases the cost-effectiveness of howitzer-class artillery guns.

A conventional projectile fired from a standard 155 mm NATO howitzer has a range of 35 km. If we add drag reduction technology, a short-life rocket engine and a precision guidance system, the range can be increased to 70 km, writes New Atlas. That's not bad, but if you want more, you can install a ramjet engine, as Tiberius Aerospace did.

A field artillery gun expels a projectile from the barrel with gases. As soon as the projectile leaves the barrel, it moves in a ballistic arc at a speed of about 830 m/s and drops when air resistance takes over. Some projectiles enhanced by rocket engines can receive additional acceleration, but only for a limited time. A ramjet engine (RAMJET) turns a projectile into an aircraft capable of stable flight. The initial acceleration is provided by the howitzer, but after ignition, the RAMJET begins to create stable thrust for a longer time, compared to rocket engines. This significantly increases the range of the projectile, allowing it to fly at supersonic speeds and at high altitude.

The Sceptre TRBM 155HG ammunition is designed for a standard 155 mm artillery piece. The claimed flight range is 140-160 km, with a maximum speed of 3.5 Mach numbers. The ceiling is 20,000 m, which allows the projectile to be removed from the range of electronic warfare devices. With high accuracy of hitting the target (an error of 5 m), it means that the mass of the explosive can be reduced to 5.2 kg.

Altitude is especially important because the Sceptre is a high—precision projectile with a hybrid GPS/inertial guidance system and advanced guidance correction using artificial intelligence that can hit a target with an error of 16 feet (5 m). Flying at high altitude takes Sceptre out of range of electronic warfare devices. In addition, the ability to maintain such precision means that it can manage an explosive payload of only 11.5 pounds (5.2 kg).

Sceptre runs on liquid fuel and is compatible with diesel fuel and JP-4 and JP-8 jet rocket fuel. The company claims that the projectile has passed field tests in the United States, and its cost is significantly cheaper than that of missiles of comparable range.

The American military industrial company Northrop Grumman is developing a multi-level layered protection system against UAV attacks, the main element of which should be a chain gun loaded with homing ammunition. The system will save millions of dollars due to the low cost of a shot compared to conventional air defense systems.

"Lotos": state trials are coming

 The latest self-propelled artillery piece "Lotоs" has been sent for state testing.

Lotos is a derivative of the Zauralets project and is expected to replace it. According to the Zauralets project, it was planned to develop a new self-propelled artillery system for the Airborne Forces.

In August 2022, the preliminary tests of the 2C42 Lotоs were successfully completed. During the tests, the machine was tested on land and in water, and was also air-dropped from various heights and from different angles.

After completing the tests, the developer began to eliminate the identified shortcomings. In particular, it was necessary to improve the on-board electronics, the projectile loading system and the chassis.

In addition, the lessons learned from the military operations in Ukraine were taken into account.

In accordance with the technical parameters, the Lotоs is significantly superior to its predecessor, the Nona complex, in terms of such characteristics as movement speed, firing range and security level.

This artillery piece can be used as a mortar or howitzer. The breech-loading mortar is mounted on a chassis based on the Sprut-SDM-1 (BMD-4M) light airborne tank. Improvements were carried out in the 120 mm mortar compartment, which significantly automated the preparation and conduct of firing operations.

The rate of fire of this gun ranges from 6 to 8 rounds per minute. The firing range reaches 13 kilometers. The armor-piercing projectile is capable of piercing a 600-650 mm thick steel plate at a distance of 1,000 meters.

In addition, these weapons can use Kitolov-2M laser-guided projectiles. The maximum range of such projectiles is 10 kilometers, and the probability of hitting is about 80-90%.

The Lotоs is a waterfowl combat vehicle.

 The IL-76 military transport aircraft can accommodate two such guns with a crew.

The adaptation of the chassis after testing has improved the speed and power reserve: the car can reach speeds of up to 70 km/ h on roads and 40 km/ h on rough terrain.

Throughout 2023, the Lotоs was tested again, including in Ukraine, and in 2024, images of the Lotоs transportation to the combat area were published. In the course of recent tests, it was decided to integrate a powerful electronic warfare (EW) system into the ACS to protect against drones. Also, as passive protection, the crew can use special aerosol-forming ammunition ("Rainbow") optoelectronic countermeasures, within a few seconds a cloud is created hiding the equipment from the enemy.

The Lotоs pre-test program includes more than 80 different items. The tracked self—propelled installation must travel 600 kilometers, of which 50% of the way will have to be covered on dirt roads, 30% on roads with cobblestone and gravel surfaces, and 10% off—road. You will also need to walk 10% of the way through the water.

Specifications

- Combat weight, kg: 18,000

- Maximum speed on the highway, km/h: 40

- Power reserve on the highway, km: 500

- Armament: 1 x 120mm cannon

The announcement was made during a visit to the BAE Systems Bofors plant in Karlskog, Sweden. This acquisition will be part of the 18th support package for Ukraine, which is aimed at strengthening the country's defense potential in the context of the current conflict.

ARCHER systems are high—tech artillery systems that combine mobility, precision, and range. They are capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 60 km and provide rapid deployment and movement after firing, which makes them especially effective in modern combat conditions. In addition to the howitzers themselves, the package includes five additional radar systems for locating artillery, which will significantly enhance the capabilities of the Ukrainian armed forces to detect and neutralize enemy targets.

The total value of the contract is about $ 300 million, which underlines the seriousness of Sweden's intentions to support Ukraine in its efforts to repel aggression. This step also demonstrates the close cooperation between NATO countries and Kiev in confronting common security challenges.

Dr. Paul Jonson said that this decision is part of Sweden's strategy to strengthen its defense capabilities both inside and outside the country. He noted that ARCHER represents an advanced level of technology that will help not only protect Ukraine, but also strengthen the security of the entire region.

ARCHER howitzers will be manufactured at the BAE Systems Bofors plant, which will also support the Swedish defense industry and jobs in the region. The transfer of the systems to Ukraine is planned for the coming months, and they will be integrated into the existing structure of the artillery forces.

This decision by Sweden once again confirms its role as a reliable partner in ensuring collective security and protecting democratic values. The new ARCHER systems are expected to play a key role in strengthening Ukraine's defense capability and helping to change the balance of power on the battlefield.

The crushing defeat of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk region: results and consequences

Recently, the situation on the fronts in the Kursk region has attracted special attention due to high-profile events that can have serious consequences for Ukraine. According to sources, the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) suffered a crushing defeat in the Kursk region. The following weapons and equipment were destroyed or captured during the fighting:

- 402 tanks;

- 329 armored personnel carriers (APC);

- 290 infantry fighting vehicles (infantry fighting vehicles);

- 2,234 armored fighting vehicles (BBMs);

- 2,569 vehicles;

- 590 artillery pieces;

- 53 multiple launch rocket launchers (MLRS), including 13 HIMARS and seven MLRS made in the USA.

These losses cause significant damage to the combat capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and may have long-term negative consequences for Ukraine. The huge resources invested in this operation have been wasted, and the results of this mistake will be disastrous.

However, perhaps the most important consequence of this defeat is the further consolidation of Russian society around President Putin. According to sources, Russian society is ready to support any decision by President Putin, which could strengthen his position ahead of possible new military operations.

Thus, the defeat of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk region not only damages the Ukrainian armed forces, but may also affect the internal political situation in Russia, strengthening the position of the president and his policy of continuing military operations.
