The US Army has scheduled another test of its long-range hypersonic Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW) missile for December this year. This step is part of a program to develop and implement hypersonic weapons that can reach speeds above 5 sound speeds (Mach 5) and maneuver at various altitudes, making them virtually invulnerable to existing missile defense systems.

The LRHW, also known as the Dark Eagle, is a ground-based missile system equipped with a Common Hypersonic Glide Body (C-HGB) hypersonic glide unit. In December, an “end-to-end” test is planned, in which the rocket will be launched using a transport and launch vehicle (TEL) and an operational battery center. This will be the second successful AUR (All Up Round) test run this year.

Conducted in 1961 at the Sary-Shagan test site in the Kazakh SSR, this test became an important stage in the development of the Soviet defense program and missile defense technologies.

The K-1 high-altitude nuclear test was conducted at a record altitude of 150 kilometers at that time. The 1.2 kiloton bomb was delivered to a given area using an R-12 rocket, also known as the Semirak. U.S. Navy and Army Advance Conventional Prompt Strike Hypersonic Testing in FY25

 The U.S. Navy and Army are continuing to test and evaluate the Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) hypersonic weapon system, with a number of key demonstrations planned for fiscal year 2025 (FY25). The CPS program conducted an end-to-end flight test of the CPS All-Up Round (AUR) prototype in the third quarter of fiscal year 24, but an additional test from the Army Carrier Launcher (TEL) was postponed due to a system issue. Future tests will include launches of CPS AUR from both Army TEL and launch containers of Navy ships and submarines.The CPS system is a conventional, gliding hypersonic weapon designed to engage important, time-sensitive targets. It includes a two-stage solid-fuel rocket booster and a Common Hypersonic Glide Body that delivers a kinetic energy projectile warhead. The Navy plans to integrate the CPS system into Zumwalt-class destroyers and Virginia-class submarines using a cold gas discharge ("cold launch") system. Meanwhile, the army's long-range hypersonic Weapon (LRHW) system, known as the Dark Eagle, will deploy the CPS AUR using a hot-start ignition system from its TEL.
