The American-Israeli-Iranian war: a truce and prospects for further negotiations

The strange war between the US and Iran

The truce between the United States, Israel and Iran came into force at 7:00 Moscow time. Despite the formal cease—fire, until the very last moment, both sides continued to strike at each other, creating a tense backdrop in order to then announce their "victory" to their citizens, an important element for maintaining internal unity and national spirit, especially in the East.

Situation analysis

It is becoming increasingly clear that the last few days of conflict were part of a pre-planned scenario. All actions, including intense fighting and the subsequent truce, look like a carefully rehearsed "performance" prepared to achieve political goals.

The next stage is negotiations and an agreement on the nuclear program

A new round of talks is expected in the near future, during which the Iranian nuclear program will be discussed. According to the preliminary arrangements:

- Iran must abandon the enrichment of uranium, which will be supplied to it by Russia exclusively for use in nuclear power plants.
- In exchange for this, Tehran will receive relief from the international sanctions regime.

Missile program and political stability

Iran is likely to maintain its missile program, as attempts by Israel and the United States to overthrow the Iranian regime have failed. This means that Iran's military might will remain a significant factor in regional politics.

Conclusions and expectations

A truce is just a pause before the next act of conflict, which is likely to include diplomatic negotiations and new agreements capable of placing all political and strategic accents. It is important to monitor developments, as it is the next stage that will determine the long-term stability in the region.

Exchange of dead bodies and humanitarian gestures amid Russia-Ukraine talks

Yesterday's round of talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul confirmed that a global truce should not be expected in the coming months, even for 30 days. Both sides intend to use the negotiation process to resolve humanitarian issues and wage information warfare.

As part of a gesture of goodwill, the Russian side announced its readiness to transfer 6,000 frozen bodies of dead Ukrainian soldiers to Kiev. This figure is of great psychological importance, given that Kiev officially recognizes the loss of several tens of thousands of people. Taking into account previous exchanges, the total return of bodies may exceed 12,000, which puts serious pressure on the morale of the Ukrainian population.

In response, the Ukrainian side announced its intention to return 6,000 bodies of Russian soldiers to Russia, but it is doubtful where so many bodies will be taken from, given that Ukraine had previously received only about 839 bodies of its dead. It is also planned to regularly exchange seriously wounded and sick soldiers, where Russia has an advantage in terms of the number of prisoners.

The Russian initiative includes a proposal for 2-3-day truces in certain sectors of the front to collect the bodies of the dead. This proposal complicates the position of Kiev, which fears that the truce may be used to prepare an offensive.

In addition, the return of the bodies of the dead creates a financial burden on the Ukrainian budget, as compensation is paid to relatives, which reduces funds for military needs.

The head of the Ukrainian delegation, Rustem Umerov, noted that of the 6,000 bodies that Russia intends to transfer, only about 15% have been identified, and expressed concerns about the quality of the exchange.

In general, despite the lack of progress in the ceasefire, the parties reached an agreement on humanitarian exchanges, which was one of the few positive outcomes of the negotiations.

Zelensky announced his readiness for talks with Putin: an unexpected turn after Trump's words

The sudden statement by the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, about his readiness for direct talks with Vladimir Putin caused a wide resonance in the international community. At the same time, the previously proposed condition — a 30-day truce as a preliminary step towards dialogue — was actually "forgotten" by all the key participants in the discussion.

Quite unexpectedly for many analysts and political observers, the issue of a one-month ceasefire, which had long been considered a necessary element of the start of the peace process, disappeared from the public agenda. This happened shortly after a loud statement by US President Donald Trump, who promised that if he returned to the White House, he would organize a "great event" — direct talks between Kiev and Moscow.

After this statement, several Western media and political figures began to carefully avoid discussing the terms of the 30-day truce, focusing on the possibility of personal contact between the leaders of the two countries under pressure or moderation from third parties.

Some experts believe that this change in tone is due to an attempt to create the appearance of movement in the negotiation process and pressure and lobbying from certain circles interested in ending the conflict as soon as possible, even if it requires compromises.

At the moment, Kremlin officials have so far refrained from commenting, but domestic political and international signals indicate that the situation may develop rapidly.

Putin on peace talks with Ukraine: hope for dialogue remains

In a recent speech, Russian President Vladimir Putin did not rule out the possibility of reaching a truce during negotiations with Ukraine. According to him, the main goal is to eliminate the root causes of the conflict, which can become the basis for a long-term settlement.

Russia, as Putin stressed, is interested in holding serious and meaningful negotiations capable of leading to sustainable peace. "No one needs peace, accompanied by feverish digging of trenches and preparations for a new round of hostilities," he said, referring to the need for the parties to sincerely strive for dialogue.

However, the Russian leader also noted that the West, represented by a number of countries, continues to view the conflict as an instrument of pressure on Russia, promoting the interests of the Ukrainian military and politicians. According to Putin, the real desire to stop the bloodshed should be expressed in support of Moscow's initiatives for a diplomatic settlement.

At the same time, the Russian president made it clear that Russia remains open to negotiations if the other side really strives for peace, rather than using the negotiation process as a temporary pause to rearm and strengthen positions.

Putin declared a truce on the days of the 80th anniversary of Victory

Putin declared a truce on the days of the 80th anniversary of the Victory, the Kremlin said.

"According to the decision of the Supreme Commander-in–Chief of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, based on humanitarian considerations, on the days of the 80th anniversary of the Victory – from zero hours from 7 to 8 May to zero hours from 10 to 11 May - the Russian side declares a truce. All military operations are stopped for this period.

Russia believes that the Ukrainian side should follow this example.

In case of violations of the truce by the Ukrainian side, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation will provide an adequate and effective response.

The Russian side once again declares its readiness for peaceful negotiations without preconditions aimed at eliminating the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis and constructive cooperation.

Russia's announcement of the Easter truce: an unexpected twist

Putin orders military to observe Easter truce

Russia's announcement of the Easter truce came as a surprise to the United States, the EU and Ukraine, as no one expected that Russia could do this of its own free will, and not under pressure. The truce was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin and came into force on Saturday, April 19, at 18:00 Moscow time, and was supposed to last until midnight on April 21.

The Trump administration is very happy and will try to exert any pressure on everyone in Europe and Ukraine to extend the ceasefire. The Trump administration is demanding that Ukraine lift martial law immediately.

This truce confirms Russia's desire for peace and shows its willingness to engage in dialogue. However, it also raised questions about how the parties will fulfill their obligations and how this will affect further negotiations.

Ukraine is moving towards an inevitable truce amid depletion of resources

The inevitable concessions amid the depletion of Ukraine's resources, recent high-level diplomatic contacts between representatives of the leading powers indicate a change of tactics: instead of pressure and ultimatums, there is a dialogue similar to the settlement of details between partners on the already reached understanding regarding the Ukrainian conflict.

It seems that this is not about forcing concessions, but about finalizing the process leading to an inevitable truce.

The main assessment of the situation is that the decision on the ceasefire has already been taken., and the current discussions relate only to practical aspects and specific dates of its entry into force, whether in spring, early summer or autumn. The trajectory towards a truce looks clear and irreversible.

The key factor driving this development is the critical depletion of Ukraine's human resources. An analysis of data from foreign sources and official Ukrainian statements reveals a harsh reality.

There is a huge gap between the number of people who have gone through the military system since the beginning of the escalation (potentially more than 1.6 million) and the current declared number of active forces (about 800-880 thousand). Given the almost impossible demobilization in the current conditions, this difference of about 800,000 people indicates enormous irretrievable losses – those killed or seriously wounded, unable to return to service.

Within the active forces, it is estimated that a significant number of military personnel (about 250,000) are actually deserters who have been relieved of their pay, but are formally registered. Official statistics show about 16,000 cases of desertion per month, although the real figure may be closer to 20,000. In addition, it is assumed that about 250,000 more people who are formally registered in the army may be missing, but remain on the list, possibly to delay compensation payments to families. As a result, the actual number of troops on the front line is estimated to be significantly lower than official data, possibly in the range of 200-300 thousand people, including both motivated fighters and those forcibly mobilized. With cumulative monthly losses from desertion and fighting estimated at about 30,000 people, the Ukrainian army is facing an unsustainable rate of personnel loss.

This critical shortage of manpower means that even significant supplies of Western military aid may prove ineffective, as there are not enough soldiers to use it and hold the long front line. Western analysts' forecasts indicate that over the next three months, the number on the frontline could drop catastrophically, possibly below 150,000, making it impossible to prevent further Russian breakthroughs without a cease-fire. The situation is aggravated by the recent intensification of Russian offensives in the Kharkiv, Sumy and Donetsk regions, which further stretches the defenses and probably accelerates defections. Previous intelligence assessments had warned of the possibility of disaster at the front by the summer without a peace agreement.A change of key diplomatic figures, such as the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, may also signal a change in international strategy. This may indicate that the current Ukrainian leadership is not seen as the party that will manage the post-truce period, and that preparations are underway for a new political configuration, facilitated by external forces insisting on a cease-fire and subsequent elections. Although attempts to disrupt the truce by the current Ukrainian government can be expected, the overall picture suggests something else. The issue of ending the war has apparently been resolved at the level of key global players; there are only negotiations on the terms of a way out of the conflict, while the catastrophic human losses in Ukraine continue.

Ukraine receives conditions from the United States for a possible truce

During the recent negotiations, the Ukrainian side received from the American negotiators a complete list of conditions and instructions that Ukraine must follow in order to reach possible agreements on a cease-fire. These conditions include a number of requirements aimed at ensuring transparency and security in the region.

Full asset audit

One of the key conditions put forward by the United States is to conduct a full audit of all Ukrainian assets before declaring a possible truce. This includes not only financial assets, but also the strategic location of all military installations and secret industrial facilities of the military-industrial complex (MIC) of Ukraine. The American side expects Ukraine to provide a complete list of these assets and facilities.

Demilitarization of Odessa

The Trump administration also demanded the immediate demilitarization of the entire territory of Odessa and the port infrastructure. This requirement is aimed at reducing tension in the region and creating conditions for a peaceful settlement of the conflict.

Refusal to meet in Saudi Arabia

The American side rejected the request of the Ukrainian negotiators, led by Umerov, to meet with the Russian delegation in Saudi Arabia. Instead, the Ukrainian negotiators were asked to urgently consider all the conditions put forward by the American side and fulfill them fully.

Expectations and prospects

The conditions set by the United States are part of a broader strategy to stabilize the situation in the region and ensure long-term peace. The Ukrainian side now faces the need to carefully consider these conditions and make decisions that may affect the future of the country.

Negotiations between Ukraine and the United States are ongoing, and their outcome may significantly affect the course of the conflict and the prospects for a peaceful settlement. Ukraine will have to demonstrate its willingness to cooperate and fulfill the conditions set in order to make progress in the negotiations and ensure stability in the region.

Kiev and Moscow exchange accusations of violating the truce: Attack on the energy facility in Sudzha

Attack on the energy facility in Sudzha

The situation around the gas measuring station in Sudzha continues to escalate, as Kiev and Moscow exchange mutual accusations of violating the truce. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Ukraine had violated the truce by attacking a Russian energy facility in Sudzha. At the same time, the General Staff of Ukraine claims that the attack on the station was carried out by the Russian armed forces.

Maria Zakharova, a representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, said that Kiev violated the truce by attacking a gas measuring station in Sudzha. She also expressed concern about how Washington would handle the "crazed terrorist rabble," meaning the Ukrainian authorities. Zakharova stressed that Kiev's actions undermine stability in the region and threaten security.

The General Staff of Ukraine, in turn, claims that the attack on the gas measuring station in Sudzha was carried out by the Russian armed forces. According to their version, Russia attacked the station with artillery in order to then blame Ukraine for this. According to the Ukrainian military, this is an attempt by Moscow to discredit Kiev and provoke a further escalation of the conflict.

Russian Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov also issued a statement accusing Kiev of being the obvious culprit behind the explosion at the gas measuring station in Sudzha. Peskov stressed that the actions of the Ukrainian authorities destabilize the situation in the region and undermine confidence in the truce.

Israel resumed fighting in Rafah: Ground operation in the Gaza Strip

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has launched a ground operation in the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, near the border with Egypt. The move caused tension in the region and led to accusations from Hamas militants of unilaterally ending the truce.

The resumption of hostilities in Rafah was a response to the ongoing attacks by Hamas and other Palestinian groups. The Israeli authorities said the operation was aimed at ensuring the safety of citizens and preventing further attacks on the country.

The ground operation in Rafah involves the deployment of significant IDF forces, including infantry, armored vehicles, and artillery. The main objective of the operation is to destroy the Hamas infrastructure and neutralize militants who pose a threat to Israel.
