Aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales arrives in Tokyo on a mission to strengthen ties in Asia

Aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales docked in Tokyo

HMS Prince of Wales leads the British aircraft carrier group

The flagship of the Royal Navy of Great Britain, the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales, arrived in the port of Tokyo, leading the British aircraft carrier Strike Group (CSG). This visit marks one of the most significant British diplomatic and military presences in East Asia in recent times and highlights London's growing focus on the Indo-Pacific region.

The aircraft carrier, escorted by escort ships and supported by F-35B aircraft, demonstrates the UK's ability to project power and participate in international operations on a global level.

Tokyo visit: from public tours to Security Summit

The Tokyo stop includes a wide range of activities. Guided tours aboard the aircraft carrier are organized for the public — a rare opportunity to see the UK's largest ship building from the inside. In parallel, meetings are being held with senior representatives of the Japanese government, the Ministry of Defense and military leaders.

Special attention is paid to strengthening bilateral cooperation in the field of security and technology, which is in line with the Global Britain strategy.

Pacific Future Forum as a dialogue center

The central event of the visit will be the Pacific Future Forum, an international summit bringing together experts, politicians and business representatives. The Forum is focused on three key areas:

  • Regional security and stability
  • Development of advanced technologies, including cybersecurity and AI
  • Economic cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region
The event aims to strengthen partnerships between the UK, Japan and other countries in the region.

The strategic importance of the UK's presence in the region

This visit is part of the UK's long—term strategy to strengthen its presence in the Indo-Pacific region. It demonstrates London's willingness to support rules, freedom of navigation and collective security in the face of growing geopolitical tensions.

Close ties with Japan, one of the UK's key strategic partners in Asia, play an important role in building a sustainable alliance based on shared values and interests.

Why is the US Navy sending the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz to the Middle East amid the escalating Israeli-Iranian conflict

The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz

The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, the oldest in the U.S. Navy and preparing for decommissioning in 2026, was unexpectedly redirected from routine operations in the South China Sea to the Middle East. This step is connected with the need to strengthen the American military presence in the region against the background of increasing tensions between Israel and Iran.

Main reasons and objectives

- Aircraft carrier rotation: The USS Nimitz will replace the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier strike group in the region, which has been in the area of responsibility for about seven months and is ready for rotation.

Show of force and deterrence: The presence of two aircraft carriers simultaneously in the region - Nimitz and Carl Vinson — serves as a powerful deterrent signal to Iran and its allies, as well as guarantees support to Israel and US allies.

- Flexible mobile airbase: The aircraft carrier provides the ability to conduct long-term combat operations without dependence on ground airfields, which is critical in conditions of instability in the region.

- Strengthening defense and support: The USS Nimitz is accompanied by several Arleigh Burke-class destroyers and, probably, a submarine, which expands the group's air and missile defense capabilities, as well as to combat underwater threats.

The escalation of the conflict between Israel and Iran, which began with Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and subsequent retaliatory missile attacks, has raised US concerns about a possible expansion of the conflict at the regional level. The deployment of the USS Nimitz and additional forces is seen as a preventive measure to stabilize the situation and protect the interests of the United States and its allies.

The dispatch of the USS Nimitz to the Middle East is part of a large—scale build-up of the US military presence in the region aimed at containing the escalation of the conflict, supporting Israel and ensuring the security of strategically important shipping lanes and allies. Despite the fact that the aircraft carrier is preparing for decommissioning, its capabilities and experience make it an important element of American naval power at a critical moment.

The second US aircraft carrier has arrived in the Middle East

The Central Command of the US Navy announced that the aircraft carrier strike group number one, led by the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, has arrived in the Middle East. This event is part of the US efforts to increase its military presence in the region due to increasing tensions.

Arrival Details

-Aircraft Carrier Strike Group: The USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) has arrived in the region along with escort ships, including the cruiser USS Princeton (CG-59) and the destroyers USS Sterett (DDG-104) and USS William P. Lawrence (DDG-110).

- Deployment objective: The Group arrived to support operations against the Houthis in Yemen and to ensure the safety of navigation in the Red Sea.

- Timeline: The USS Carl Vinson is expected to be in the region over the coming months, replacing the USS Harry S. Truman, which has already been deployed to Central Command.

The arrival of the second aircraft carrier group in the Middle East underscores the United States' determination to counter the threats posed by the Houthis and their allies. It also demonstrates the ability of the United States to rapidly deploy large military forces to maintain peace and stability in the region.

F/A-XX: The next generation of US Navy fighter jets — characteristics and prospects

The next-generation F/A-XX fighter being developed by the US Navy is attracting the attention of military experts around the world. Recently, some of the characteristics of this promising aircraft were revealed, including its flight range, which turned out to be 25% longer than existing Navy fighters. However, this figure is lower than many expected, given that expanding the range of an aircraft carrier strike group is a key Navy priority.

Flight range increased by 25%

During the Sea-Air-Space 2025 exhibition, Rear Admiral Michael Donnelly, Deputy Chief of Staff of the US Navy for Aviation, said that the estimated range of the F/A-XX is 25% longer than that of tactical fighters in service with the aircraft carrier wing. Based on the range of the F-35C, which is about 670 nautical miles (1,241 km), the maximum range of the F/A-XX can reach 837.5 nautical miles (1,551 km). Although this increase seems moderate, Donnelly emphasized that the F/A-XX will use developing organic aerial refueling capabilities, in particular, the MQ-25 Stingray based on the aircraft carrier.

Fighter concept

The F/A-XX is being developed with the ability to penetrate high-threat zones to counter anticipated threats in the 2040s, including improved enemy reconnaissance, surveillance, and combat capabilities. In addition, the F/A-XX will integrate artificial intelligence and other technological advantages to provide more efficient battlefield management and integration with unmanned systems.

Factors influencing the development

This announcement may come as a surprise, given that the U.S. Navy has always emphasized that expanding the range of the carrier strike group is a key priority. In the face of growing threats from China, expanding the range of an aircraft carrier strike group is considered key to ensuring future security. However, an increase in the range of the F/A-XX by only 25% means that its range may not meet the Navy's expectations.

The future of F/A-XX

Despite the modest range increase, other performance improvements to the F/A-XX, such as its stealth capability, artificial intelligence integration, and integration with unmanned systems, make it an important element of future naval forces. With the commissioning of the MQ-25 Stingray, the range of the F/A-XX can be extended. In addition, the F/A-XX is being developed with compatibility in mind with future weapons systems, which will allow it to maintain combat superiority over the next decades.

The Royal Navy uses drones for supply in the Indo-Pacific region

For the first time, the Royal Navy will deploy a fleet of drones to carry out vital ship-to-ship resupply missions during the upcoming deployment of the British Aircraft Carrier Strike Group (CSG) to the Indo-Pacific region.

According to updated Royal Navy news, nine Malloy T-150 octover helicopters will join the HMS Prince of Wales Air group later this month and will carry out missions alongside F-35B aircraft and naval helicopters to transport food, mail and engineering parts throughout the task force.

The goal is to, to free the helicopters from the routine work of supply, freeing them for their main combat and defensive tasks. Drone operations will be conducted by a 12-person team from 700X Naval Air Squadron based at RNAS Culdrose.
