Modern US air defense systems deployed in the Arctic and Africa for the first time

Self-propelled air defense system Sgt. STOUT

Self-propelled air defense systems Sgt. STOUT*, equipped with Stinger missiles, were involved in live-fire exercises with NATO allies in Norway during the exercise Formidable Shield 2025 to repel the threat from UAVs.  Aerial defenders shot down target drones simulating threats from low altitude during several nighttime live-fire exercises, as with Sgt. STOUT, and from the ground.

Mobile air defense systems Avenger were also deployed in Tunisia as part of the African Lion exercise, which was its first use on the continent.

*In 2024, the Maneuver-Short Range air defense system was renamed in honor of Medal of Honor recipient Sergeant Mitchell W. Stout, who died in Vietnam.
