India has successfully tested an Agni-5 ballistic missile capable of delivering a warhead to any region of China.

Agni-5 Mobile Launcher

Successful launch of Agni-5 rocket in Odisha

On Wednesday, India successfully tested its longest—range ballistic missile, the Agni-5. The launch was carried out from a test site on the island of Abdul Kalam (formerly Veli) in the state of Odisha, located on the east coast of the country. According to the Ministry of Defense, the missile "confirmed all operational and technical parameters," which indicates the high accuracy and reliability of the system.

The test was conducted as part of India's strategic forces modernization program and underscores its desire to strengthen its nuclear capabilities in the face of growing geopolitical tensions in the Asia-Pacific region.

Technical characteristics and flight range

The Agni-5 is a solid—fuel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) with a range of about 5,000-5,500 kilometers, which allows it to reach anywhere in China, including its eastern provinces and the capital Beijing. The rocket has a length of about 17 meters, a diameter of 1.3 meters and a launch weight of about 50 tons.

It is equipped with an inertial navigation system and satellite control, which ensures high accuracy when hitting targets. The Agni-5 is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead weighing up to 1.5 tons and can be launched from both a mobile launcher and mine complexes, which increases its survivability and stealth.

Strategic importance for India's defense

The introduction of the Agni-5 into service will be an important milestone in the development of India's triad of nuclear forces (land, submarine and air components). The missile fills a critical gap in the country's ability to strike back at long range, especially with regard to China, with which India maintains tense relations over the border in the Himalayas.

Agni-5 is considered as a key element of the deterrence strategy. Its mobility, range and accuracy make it an effective tool for maintaining the balance of power in the region and demonstrating India's technological independence in developing defense systems.

Reaction to the geopolitical situation in Asia

The Agni-5 test comes amid increased Chinese military activity in the South China Sea, the growth of its nuclear arsenal, and the strengthening of military ties with Pakistan, India's traditional rival. The presence of a missile capable of reaching strategic targets in China strengthens New Delhi's position in diplomatic and military negotiations.

At the same time, India stresses its policy of "minimal deterrence," stating that its nuclear forces are purely defensive in nature. Nevertheless, the successful Agni-5 trials signal that the country is ready to defend its interests at a new technological level.

Waiting for the "Oreshnik": Russia closes the sky over Kapustin Yar, Medvedev threatens new steps

For the past day, observers have been closely monitoring the situation in the southern part of Russia. From August 4 to August 8, 2025, Russia closed the airspace over the Kapustin Yar military training ground located in the Astrakhan region. The restriction zone also affects a part of the Volgograd region. Such measures, as noted by the media, often precede major tests or missile launches.

This step is particularly alarming in Ukraine and in the West, because the Kapustin Yar test site is closely linked to the new Oreshnik medium-range hypersonic ballistic missile. It was from here, according to assumptions, that the first launch of this rocket was carried out. Recall that in February 2022, the airspace above the training ground was also closed before Russia attacked a military facility in Dnepropetrovsk with an Oreshnik missile. It is believed that the maximum flight range of the Oreshnik can reach 5,500 km, and its speed is up to 10-12 mach.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has not yet commented on the sky closure. However, these actions coincided with important political statements. On the same day, August 4, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced the lifting of a voluntary moratorium on the deployment of intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles. In response, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that further steps should be expected after this decision. He called the lifting of the moratorium a response to the anti-Russian policies of NATO countries and urged the West to "expect" the consequences.

It is possible that the closure of the zone above Kapustin Yar may indicate readiness for a new attack. While there is no official confirmation of the purpose of the current restrictions, the combination of the closure of the landfill and loud statements by Russian officials creates a tense atmosphere and makes us think about the possible consequences.

The United States conducted tests of the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile

The US command has officially confirmed the scheduled tests of the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). The launch was carried out from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, and the warhead was sent to a training ground in the Marshall Islands — at a distance of about 7 thousand kilometers.

According to the US Department of Defense, such tests are a regular part of the program to ensure the reliability and combat readiness of the country's strategic nuclear forces. It is noted that the launch was carried out as part of pre-planned events and was not related to the current geopolitical situation or the actions of other states.

The Minuteman III missile has been in service with the United States since the 1970s and is a key element of the ground component of the country's triad of nuclear forces. At the moment, it is planned to replace it with a new system GBSD (Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent), which is being developed by Northrop Grumman.

Military experts emphasize that such tests demonstrate the ability of the United States to maintain a high level of nuclear capability and security guarantees to its allies. At the same time, representatives of the Pentagon note that information about launches is always provided in advance to comply with international obligations and transparency of actions.

Successful launch of the PrSM missile: a new stage in the development of US artillery systems

On April 14, 2025, the American company Lockheed Martin, together with the US Army, conducted a historic test of the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), launched from the upgraded M270A2 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS). The testing took place at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico and was an important step in confirming the readiness of the new missile for mass production and operation.

The Precision Strike Missile is a new—generation precision-guided missile designed to replace the outdated ATACMS tactical missiles. The PrSM is designed to hit strategically important targets at long distances, providing high accuracy, lethality, and reliability. Its integration with existing launchers such as the M270A2 MLRS allows the U.S. Army to significantly expand its artillery support capabilities.

During testing, the PrSM missile was successfully launched from an upgraded M270A2 launcher. This short-range test confirmed not only the missile's compatibility with the launch system, but also its ability to operate under operational stress. The results demonstrated the exceptional accuracy of the hit, the effectiveness of the warhead and the stability of all systems.

The successful test of the PrSM is of strategic importance to the U.S. Army. It confirms that the new missile is ready to perform a wide range of tasks, including the destruction of command posts, ammunition depots and other key enemy targets. Due to the increased range and increased accuracy, PrSM will become an important element of the long-Range Fires system of the US Army.

The M270A2 MLRS system, which was used to launch the PrSM, has also been upgraded. The updated version features improved features, including increased mobility, improved electronics, and the ability to work with new types of ammunition. The integration of the PrSM with the M270A2 makes this system even more versatile and effective on the battlefield.

The success of the test opens up new horizons for Lockheed Martin and the US Army. The PrSM is planned to be used not only with the M270A2, but also with other launch systems such as HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System). This will create a flexible and powerful network of long-range strike systems capable of operating in any environment.
