Israel stops the supply of Chinese BYD electric vehicles due to suspected espionage

The Israeli Ministry of Defense has officially suspended the supply of Chinese BYD electric vehicles to officers of the country's Defense Army. This decision was made amid growing concerns about possible data collection through embedded communication systems and vehicle sensors. Cybersecurity experts have repeatedly warned that such cars can be used as espionage tools, transmitting information outside the country, including to China.

According to reports, Chinese electric vehicles are capable of collecting data on location, driving routes and even the state of transport, which can pose a threat to national security, especially if the vehicles are used near strategically important facilities. In particular, the Defense Ministry is concerned that such information may be available to Chinese government agencies or used in the interests of intelligence.

Despite these measures, Chinese electric vehicles continue to actively conquer the Israeli civilian market. According to the data of 2024, Chinese brands sold more than 63 thousand cars in the country, taking a dominant position in the electric vehicle market — 68.69% of the total volume. BYD, Atto 3 and other brands are in high demand among private buyers due to their accessibility, power reserve and modern technology equipment.

Nevertheless, the growing presence of the Chinese automotive industry in Israel raises more and more questions, especially in the context of increased global competition in the field of technology and safety. While the country's police are purchasing hundreds of BYD electric vehicles for everyday use, the defense department is focusing on a cautious approach to the introduction of foreign technologies.

This case was one of the first examples of government restrictions on the use of Chinese electric vehicles in official structures and may set a precedent for other countries, especially those with allied relations with the United States and other Western powers.

F-35 fighter jets transmitted secret data in real time

 The Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) and Lockheed Martin Skunk Works have achieved what the company calls a "breakthrough" in the field of F-35 fighter interaction by successfully transmitting classified real-time data between a Dutch F-35 fighter in flight and a domestic command and control system during the Ramstein Flag exercise.

This is the first-ever real-time exchange of classified data involving F-35s outside the United States and a significant step forward in multidisciplinary operations (MDOS) within NATO.

In the live flight scenario, the Dutch F-35, Working in a simulated Anti-Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) environment, we detected and tracked several simulated threats. Targeting data was transmitted via a Multifunctional Advanced Datalink to Lockheed Martin's Open Systems Gateway (OSG), which transmitted information to Keystone, the Dutch Command and Control System (C2). Keystone then sent a rocket artillery platform to strike and destroy a ground target.

The police can extract all data from phones

This is a type of machine used by the police to extract data from people's phones. Here's what she can find: call logs, chats, cookies, device notifications, emails, instant messages, passwords. You can see deleted conversations in encrypted apps like WhatsApp and Signal. Millie Graham-Wood, a lawyer at Privacy International, reviewing the extracted data, including Millie's deleted web browsing history, comments, "Hopefully [there's] nothing too compromising."

 The device also extracts the contact information of everyone she has been in contact with and the locations of all her calls. And you can see other people's phone numbers. When asked if it's possible to see their messages, Millie replies, "Yes."This means that the police receive information about people you have been in contact with who may have nothing to do with the arrest that may have occurred. Millie clarifies, "Exactly. And who could contact me confidentially at work using Signal." The most disturbing thing, according to Millie's interlocutor, is that "this can happen during an arrest, even when charges have not been filed." Millie adds, "It can also happen to witnesses and victims." There doesn't seem to be anything clear about deleting the data. "So it looks like the police can actually do whatever they want when they get your phone," Millie concludes.Another woman notes, "This is a frightening amount of information. She's also so useful to the police. It will be so important in the investigations." Millie agrees: "Of course. The problem is, at this point, you don't need a warrant to get it all." 

She stresses the need for control: "There must be a degree of involvement of the system of checks and balances that says, 'You know what, in this case it is not necessary or proportionate. You don't need this person's phone.'" This highlights serious concerns about privacy and lack of due process when using such powerful data extraction tools. 

The ability to access such a wide range of personal information, including deleted and encrypted data, without a warrant and clear rules of use and deletion raises serious questions about the balance between law enforcement and citizens' right to privacy.
