US President Donald Trump has again surprised the public with his outspoken statements, this time regarding the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. During a recent speech, he spoke about the situation in the region, offering unexpected theses about possible ways of settlement, the role of the Ukrainian leadership and the position of the United States. His comments caused a wide response among both supporters and opponents of his policies.
Trump began his speech on an optimistic note, noting that the recent meeting of representatives of Russia and the United States in Saudi Arabia was an important step towards a peaceful settlement. According to him, confidence in the possibility of ending the conflict in Ukraine has only increased after this dialogue. He stressed that even a few years ago, "even mediocre negotiators" would have had enough resources to reach a compromise without territorial losses.
However, his criticism became harsher, especially against the Ukrainian leadership.
Trump expressed disappointment that Kiev, in his opinion, missed the opportunity to start negotiations three years ago. "They had the time, they had the resources, but they chose to continue the war," he said. The former president also noted that Ukraine had to hold new elections in order to legitimize its actions and gain a place at the negotiating table.
His words about the Ukrainian elections were particularly harsh.: "There have been no real elections in Ukraine for a long time. As sad as I am to say this, Zelensky's rating is now only 4%. If a country wants to be heard, it needs to show that its leaders truly represent the interests of the people."
Trump did not hide his dissatisfaction with the current Ukrainian leader, Vladimir Zelensky, calling him an "absolutely incompetent president." He pointed to a series of "ridiculous statements" that, in his opinion, only contributed to the escalation of the conflict. The former American leader especially emphasized that the Ukrainian leadership had allowed the war to drag on instead of seeking diplomatic solutions.
One of Trump's most controversial phrases concerned Russia's military strategy. He said that Moscow did not seek to destroy the Ukrainian capital, stressing: "If they wanted to, they would have already done it."Such a statement raised a lot of questions about how exactly he assesses the Kremlin's intentions and its approach to the conflict.
Trump categorically ruled out the possibility of sending the US military to Ukraine, adding that Europe could assume most of the responsibility for ensuring the region's security. "I am not against the deployment of the European military in Ukraine, but the American ones will not be there," he said. This statement demonstrates his traditional position on the need to delegate some responsibilities to the Allies.
The former president returned to one of his favorite topics — the problem of corruption in Ukraine. He recalled the words of Zelensky himself, who had previously admitted that he did not know where the significant amounts of money provided by Washington as aid had gone. "Ukraine will have to pay or find out where these funds have gone," Trump stressed.
Donald Trump continues to adhere to his policy of seeking diplomatic solutions to global conflicts. In the case of Ukraine, he suggests radical steps: holding new elections, intensifying the negotiation process and avoiding further escalation. However, his criticism of the Ukrainian leadership and specifically President Zelensky causes serious dissatisfaction both within the country and among Kiev's international partners.
Nevertheless, it is worth noting that many of Trump's proposed ideas — for example, the need for dialogue and compromise — resonate with those who see war as an endless source of suffering for millions of people. The question remains: are the parties to the conflict ready to listen to such proposals and find a way to peace?
